And even if some will say they're not scientists, NO ONE would ever do that in an alien planet. Some people have said it's because space traveling has become as commonplace as driving to the supermarket in their time, but that will never be true. Space is too hostile an environment and alien planets will never be totally safe from the get go, no matter how Earthlike they are. It's just stupid stupid stupid plot convenience... which is what this movie should be called. David: the covenant of stooges and plot convenience.

Ridley Scott I don't think actually understands his own films. You've only got to look at the ridiculous idea in Blade Runner that Deckard is a replicant. It makes no actual sense to the story we are watching and the script's message. Great visual director. Not a cerebral one.

@PunksterOS7 жыл бұрын
No, it really wasn't. It was dumb. If you liked it, fair enough. Shouldn't have to say this but it is subjective, is it not?
@Scottirulez7 жыл бұрын
You're right, but I still (subjectively) think Prometheus is one of those overlooked movies which is really a hidden gem. They tried to do something different in that film, adding the engineers, adding Weyland, making meaning in the films through the creator/created dynamic. Sadly the so called "fanz" didn't take to Prometheus and that's why we get more of the same in covenant
@PunksterOS7 жыл бұрын
Prometheus was stupid. Not as stupid as this new one but still dumb. Where do I start? Okay the two love birds at the start find cave painting and from that, they have not only created a theory on Engineers but it is completely bang on, correct and all from a bunch of cave paintings. With that same cave painting, combined with others also with the same image, they decide to visit a vague 5 or 6-star system (which could have been one of any billion of stars in that pattern) based on nothing but a hunch, they get a team of top scientists on a expensive ship and off they went. Dumb. The punk looking geologist guy (Fifield, I think) who had sent out the mapping dogs, has a map on his wrist somehow then gets lost on the alien ship along with his Biologist mate? Lol. That's the same guy who decides to leave for no good reason with said biologist over a dead headless alien body, screaming how he _"Loves rocks,"_ As he goes. Then later, once lost and left behind that very same two who ran away from _"Gigantic dead body,"_ In the first place suddenly approach a new penis shaped creature, they never encountered before in the EXACT same room they ran away from and decide to make friends with it, creating their own demise. Too dumb to live. The protagonist's boyfriend is on the planet less than a day and is now drinking in self-pity because he didn't get to meet the Engineers, after a day? He also removes his helmet for no good reason, which is retarded, it could have worked if no one else did it but they all did. David then spikes his drink right in front of his face. Dumbfuck. The med pod that was calibrated to only work on males on a ship of human beings, not different species the last time I checked but hey it is the current year after all. Yes it was to hint at the later reveal of Weyland but it was still in Vickers' quarters. Old man, Guy Pearce-Weyland was secretly on the ship revealed as some important twist and wasn't, then they top that non-twist by having Vickers be his secret daughter too. Dumb and dumber They finally get to talk to the engineer and we as an audience think, _yes, we are going to get some great mystery explained_ but then with no rhyme or reason, he rips David's head clean off and begins attacking the crew. Dun dun dum duuuuuuumb. That's all from my *very* nit-picky memory, I admit, I could go on but I'm sure I'm boring you by this point. It is a mountain of stupid that frustrated me as I watched it the first time, pissed me off the second and when I saw it again recently, I laughed at just how amateur it all was. Its major saving grace was the visuals but that is nothing compared to everything else that was just so retarded about it. Like I said, dumb.

I'm not surprised to hear this. Alien was a horror film with sci-fi trappings. Aliens was an action film with sci-fi trappings. Those are the good ones. They then took that material and tried to make real sci-fi out of it. The problem is that Hollywood has no real sci-fi fans in it, so, naturally, they're going to fail when they try to do the real thing. Couple that with the fact that it's a sequel to a prequel (a midquel?) and you guarantee failure. I'm betting that the Blade Runner sequel will suck as well.
@alexandresobreiramartins94617 жыл бұрын
Thanks to Denis Villeneuve, it was actually pretty good. I still prefer the original, but the new one was quite good. Ridley just put money in it and (due to the overall quality of the movie) didn't have creative control. Also, you're one of the very few people I've seen that defined Alien and Aliens so perfectly for what they are. I always say Aliens is not a proper sequel to Alien, but its own thing. It's good, but it's not a horror movie. It's an action flick. There's no sign of the mystery-generated tension that made the first one into the masterpiece thriller it is. Not complained, as I said, I like Aliens, but definitely not a horror movie.

@@GeneralG1810 I remember being confused at the theatrical cut of Alien 3, but once I watched the Assembly Cut, it was much better. My first experience with the AC was on DVD, and that did suck because they hadn't spent the money on getting the actors to come back and re-record some of their lines (like Charles Dance does at the beginning of the movie). The Blu Ray has fixed those issues and looks great . As for Resurrection, it was interesting. I like Ron Pearlman and the supporting cast isn't bad at all, but some scenes of humor just don't work, I'm sorry, they don't. The movie also has a strange color; they apparently used some kind of silver in the film itself to tint it, but the look is weird. I do like the scene where Ripley destroys the clone attempts, and the underwater scene, but I felt the last alien looked and acted very stupid. So yes, the idea of Ripley as a clone was interesting, but it could have been executed much better.

FYI, the rifles they are using is the (f88 austeyr), and it only fires semi-automatic or 3 round bursts, making it fully automatic would not make it more effective against the aliens, it would actually be less effective, as it would be near impossible to use and land a hit with all that extra recoil, a better and much more effective weapon against the aliens would be the (AA-12 shotgun), it can fire full auto and maintain almost no recoil, it would also be better using something like buck shot, would make it easier to land a hit on the small and very fast alien new born.

I liked the movie. Sure, it could have been better but I understand why they went in this direction. People freaked out about the way Prometheus was presented so Ridley tried to incorporate his new vision with the old and ended up not really pleasing anyone. Even though the characters (except David, Walter, and Tennessee) were one-dimensional, the acting was still amazing all around. We saw no real interaction between Daniels and her husband (the dead captain) but when she cried over his things it felt genuine. Also, the scene when they bring the first infected crew member on the ship and the two ladies were freaking out felt incredibly raw and genuine as well. Oddly enough, I think it's after David shows up that the movie goes downhill which is weird because David and Walter's interactions were pretty much the highlight of this film. I think it went downhill because the movie kind of felt like it came to a halt and only focused on Fassbender; the other characters were forgotten and their development completely stopped (they didn't even stop to gaze in wonder at the alien city around them). There was so much potential lost which is a shame. Was it a great film, no. But I don't think it's the pile of trash that some people are making it out to be.

I agree in particular with the point at the end. A good movie can have suffering and evil deeds -- take Schindler's List, for example -- but the more evil and suffering, the more payoff there has to be to justify them. The "good guys" don't have to win, but there has to be something that says that, win or lose, they really were right. A story that is just depravity after depravity with no payoff is simply an evil story. My impression is that the Saw franchise is that way -- at least, it makes no effort to portray itself any differently. Furthermore, some depravity is so extreme that I doubt it could be justified with being fully shown in ANY movie. The Hunger Games are about children being forced to kill each other FOR ENTERTAINMENT -- and these movies are watched by our own society FOR ENTERTAINMENT.

I agree with most of what you say, but the parts I enjoyed were because of the similarity to what made the originals great. With Prometheus Ridley had a good chance to change gear and steer it (and further releases) towards exploring The Engineers and other aspects of the Alien universe, instead they went with trying to incorporate too much of the Alien content within the film and it just ended up being another "Alien" film. The same can be said with Alien: Covenant, there was a chance to further expand on where Prometheus ended but instead (like your review says) it ends up being a standard Alien template that has no character development with a cliched environment and with no real engagement, which leads to the audience not to care. I also feel that they focused too much on David and his point of view but in the end you're left with a film that's essentially a forgetful stain on the mattress.

Oh but we should, not as an actual part of the Ghostbusters lore of course, but as a perfect example of how not to do pretty much anything movie related.

I feel like this should have been an Alien spinoff focusing on the AI of Weyland-Yutani, making it an Alien prequel ruins both the Alien franchise and makes this movie a lot less enjoyable.

It might be a Sci Fi template but at least they aren’t saved by time travel love and anti grav magic.

it's a shame that the novels( earth hive, nightmare asylum, ect) are not considered cannon. have you read then dave? these books are what your looking for in a squeal to aliens

This was a great review. I agree that this movie has no deeper meaning and was utterly predictable. People seem to be watching it purely for the grotesque scenes where people's stomachs explode. You forgot to mention the feminist angle of the Alien franchise. The last-standing character is always a short-haired female who manages to be tougher than all the other male crew members combined.

Prometheus failed to be an Alien prequel. Alien covenant failed to be an Prometheus sequel and an Alien movie. I don't know they even bothered connecting this movie to Prometheus.

ALIEN 3 WAS AWESOME. What the hell? Go find littlejimmy835 for his absolutely meaningful review of this underrated and justifiable ending of the Alien franchise.

Yer but how do you reeeally feel about it?

I just laughed at the horribly predictable story line. Was so cliche when things start going bad in the ship they land in, I could not help but laugh at the sheer stupidity of the crew, who were suppose to be pioneers who trained for a decade (albeit for another planet but still). Pretty sure they all would have been the top guys of their professions, engineers, ecologists, doctors, military trained etc.
