I watch this movie, and I legitimately can't believe that it's directed by the same guy who directed the original Alien. It's almost like he had absolutely no memory of how these creatures were supposed to work. I mean, what the hell was up with that "stick-figure" Chestburster? The Chestbursters are supposed to be larval-forms - they come out more like snakes and eventually develop limbs after molting. But what really gets me is that, we're supposed to believe that THIS is the answer to where the Xenomorphs came from? They were originally designed to be a genocidal alien-virus capable of wiping out an indigenous species of a planet in mere moments, that mutated when making contact with air, thus resulting in a fungus that releases infectious fungal spores, that cause parasitic monsters to grow inside a host unfortunate enough to come into contact with them? And one-way-or-another, these Proto-Morph things were effectively stagnating in their current form, until a Genocidal Android with a God-Complex somehow managed to cross-breed the right genes enough, to make a perfected GMO version of the Xenomorph, which is how we get Facehuggers?! ...Something tells me it's just easier to believe that the Predators engineered the Xenomorphs to be the Ultimate Game. At least THAT doesn't sound nearly as convoluted.

My Rating = 2/10! Seriously, I never felt more enraged while watching this movie. Mostly it's a huge failure because they actually had the ground works for a good prequel (if you take out Prometheus): Just have a plot involving Planetary colonists discovering a planet with hibernating Xenomorphs, have David be an obsessive biologist artist, wanting to breed his own xenomorphs, creating neomorphs after ten years of being on this planet (who was apart of an early Colonial mission, but discovered an Engineer/Jockey colony), and the colony crew end up being preyed on by both Xenomorphs and David with his Neomorphs. Then, in the end, everyone deads, only for a Space Jockey (the one we see in the first Alien) collecting Xenomorph eggs, and one sneaky facehugger snuck on its ship, and boom! You have your Prequel! You're done! The Fans are happy, I'm happy, Decker is happy! No Sci-fi Creationism overtones! No unfulfilled promises of revealing Xenomorph origins! I agree with you, Decker: the Visuals are beautiful, and the Music was good, hell even the Gore managed to make my rating a 2, instead of a 1. The story is a failure on every level, and the homoerotic scene with the androids felt forced and unnatural. Like they wanted to fit with the current year but failed. Plus I didn't know they had a gay couple in the movie until someone told me of a KZbin prologue scene...oh okay? Why was that not in the movie? I ended up not giving a single fuck for the characters (Except for Danny McBride, I did feel for him and loved his dramatic role, just wish it was in a better movie.), so once again Alien series fails to be a horror, because if I don't care about the characters, then it's not a horror film, despite what Michael Bay would tell you.
@KaijuCommander6 жыл бұрын
Its so depressing to think Ridley Scott, the man who created the original Alien, is responsible for both of these awful alien prequels. I mean, the man deserves praise for his earlier work & its impact on cinema and pop culture, without a doubt, but I just don't know what he's doing with these prequel films, they're the kind of prequels that take AWAY from the original film rather than increase your enjoyment of it. I have NO interest in where David's wacky descent into cartoon villainy is going & hope these prequel films do not continue any further, just retcon them out of the alien timeline and leave their origins a mystery again, or at least say they were created by the Space Jockeys or Predators instead of an insane man made android named David. The black goo saga should end here and be forgotten for the sake of the Alien franchise' future (if it even has one at this point), or at least out of respect for its legacy in sci-fi horror history. P.S. how is it possible that the humans of these films literally keep getting dumber and dumber? Its like the filmmakers heard the critiques against the characters of Prometheus and doubled down on their stupidity to see how much worse they could get. How do all these morons keep getting jobs on high-tech deep space missions that require at LEAST basic common sense in order to survive and succeed?! XD

@GriffinPilgrim6 жыл бұрын
+Fury161 I didn't mean ceremony literally, I meant that they were killed casually, as if they didn't matter. The main point of the second half of Aliens was "Save Newt" and the end had her Ripley and Hicks as the beginning of a sort-of family. It was a narratively satisfying ending, particularly with the stuff about Amanda Ripley back in the film. Then along comes Alien 3 and the writers are like "Well, that kid's going to slow down this re-tread of the original we wanna do. Eh, just off her and that soldier, who gives a shit." That I found very disrespectful to the characters and to those who worked on the previous film. If anything I find it worse than Covenant, since Newt, Hicks and Bishop were more engaging and interesting characters than Shaw so killing them off so easily as if they didn't matter bothers me more.
@irllcd136 жыл бұрын
+GriffinPilgrim I agree but it's not really the writers of Alien3, it was the studio. They were too cheap to pay Michael Beihn and Carrie Henn had aged too much. That's why they were killed off. No other reason. I would have been fine if they had died if those deaths had artistic merit. But they didn't. Hell, I'll even be generous and say they can kill one of them off off screen at the start, but doing it to both is just utterly lazy writing. It's like using a Deus Ex Machina to get someone out of a jam, except it's to get the story out of a jam instead of getting a character out of a jam.

That's the most retarded origin story for the xenos one could think of. And Covenant's crew acts like all it's members came out straight out of Idiocracy universe. @majorbensonwinifredpayne21586 жыл бұрын
It's kinda sad that Scott didn't like the original script for Prometheus and decided to rewrite it. According to it xenomorphs were artificially engineered creatures, created by the Engineer civilization as a bioweapon. While it wasn't striking imagination, at least it made perfect sense as an explanation to why there were eggs on a derelict ship on LV-426 and why the xenos were so dangerous.
@Bezaliel136 жыл бұрын
+Major Benson Winifred Payne Unless the Engineer civilization were not humans from space, the does not sound much better. Admittedly, if humans were not engineered, xenomorphs would have been alien then, but there would have been problems, like the evil organization having wasted so much time trying to get a sample of a weapon that had probably been replaced by its creators long ago when they could have tried studying the assembly line.

To be honest, a better movie would have been Shaw sharing the Engineer ship with David and slowly realising she had an android psychopath on her hands. Then she could have flushed him out of an airlock and set off on her own to encounter the engineers.

Neutrinos don't travel at a faster speed than light, but when there is some kind of solar cataclysm, It starts at the nucleus of the star, from where the neutrinos escape with ease cause they almost don't intereact with matter. The photons take longer to get to the surface because they do interact with matter, heavily, so when you detect a massive neutrinos burst prepare yourself. This is just to clarify.

Anyway, as a possible suggestion to decompress, you may want to review Roger Corman's "Forbidden World" from 1982 as a possible Alien/Thing/ripoff. It doesn't offer many questions, but it doesn't want to. It's got slime, girls, low grade effects, and all the other things B movie lovers want. Before, Dimension, before Asylum, there was Roger Corman, and his ability to cash in with vengeance. However Neutrinos typically proceed the violent death of a star/nova/supernova and this was likely the warning that was implied or should have been warned about as just neutrinos themselves should’ve been little cause for concern. Fucking awesome review though!

This movie was beyond insulting. For years, I'd been one of the people defending Prometheus. For example, when they took off their helmets in Prometheus, they went out of their way to show them scanning the atmosphere of this dead planet and determining it to be safe. Furthermore, despite all of the death, nothing in Prometheus was caused by airborne pathogens, so taking off their helmets really was safe after all. I'd been refuting that piece of criticism to no end. So imagine how insulting it is to see the follow-up movie feature characters that don't ever scan the atmosphere of a planet obviously teeming with life, that don't even bother with helmets in the first place and who actually _do_ encounter airborne pathogens!

That thing about the signal annoys me. In Alien, they worked on a hauling rig that was old and dilapidated. They had cryotech on board. They were all in stasis, had been for MONTHS, when the signal was picked up. That ship could very well have been the new commercial model at the time Covenant took place. And it was programmed to stop at any sign of alien life. Yet the state-of-the-art science vessel, whose only single purpose was to seek out signs of new life, was NOT programmed to stop at any sign of alien life?

Mother from Alien was already acting on company orders when it woke the crew. They seemed to know what the signal was about. Tennessee could detect the signal because he was outside the ships shielding.

Decker, the alien we thought was the classic wasn't necessarily a xenomorph, this variant is considered to be the protomorph. This alien in particular was a meant to be the early version of the xeno that didn't fully evolve into its biomechanical look. And there are tons of differences between this protomorph and the classic xeno that we all know and love. One is that instead of having the biomechanical exoskeletal body this variant seems to have a internal skeleton within a more fleshy epidermic skin. Of course it has acidic blood but another thing in difference is the behavior between the two. The xenomorph is more advanced in intelligence, it stalks, outsmarts and actually plans its attacks on its prey. Where as the protomorph is more feral and savage. It acts more animalistic with the less advanced intelligence to the point where no matter what the situation is it will just go in for the attack instead of fleeing from a dangerous situation or adversary. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass I was just telling some facts about the differences between Xenomorph and Protomorph.

People loved characters being killed offscreen at the start of Alien 3 so much, Ridley Scott decided to do it again. Noomi Rapace was the only thing I enjoyed about Prometheus and I couldn't believe you had to watch some internet video to find out what happened to her.
@Kenshar19846 жыл бұрын
Full theory: We know from the mural in Prometheus that the Engineers knew about Xenomorphs and Facehuggers (both pictured in the mural). This leads me to believe the Engis took from the Xeno's (which spread naturally on worlds throughout the galaxy) the unique gene that gives them the ability take foreign DNA and mutate and integrate it into the xenomorph's own biology. This gene lets the Xenos instantly adapt to whatever environment the host is operating in. The ship in Alien (the 1st movie) was one which was harvesting eggs of the species to use to develop this weapon / tool. The Engis took this gene from the Xenos and weaponized it making the black goo because they saw its amazing unique properties to change life. David then learned about the origin of the black goo and tries to reverse engineer a xenomorph from what little data he could find because he believes this ability to mutate and adapt to the universe to be perfection. There we go... All tied up nice and neat. God I hope they don't fuck up the last film and make this very clear.
@vladyvhv95793 жыл бұрын
Rather well done. Except the Xenomorphs didn't spread naturally. They were seeded by the Yautja (Predators) to be hunted and on some worlds, hunts went wrong and not all of them were killed off, allowing the Engineers to learn of their existence.

Great review, I always love how you seem to find tiny mistakes and play them off as '... But anyways' :) As an Alien, Aliens, Alien3 and Prometheus fan, at first I thought I liked this movie. A perfect massive destructive creature as the xenomorph must be the end product of a long period of evolution between different species, as Prometheus tried to tell by ending it with the Deacon. But it seems that Scott had other plans and it was really sad to see he tried to please the Alien fans more who didn't like Prometheus as much as telling an original story. He promised Alien prequels from the start, but Prometheus was kinda it's own thing. Shame that it's going to be a mess from now on. The xenomorph has really been butchered over the decades and it only worries me more for the movies to come. If they're ever going to make that 'Aliens 2' with Weaver, that would be exciting tho. Love you work!
@strenuousspider95253 жыл бұрын
Someone mentioned tgat the Xenomorphs were in the Engineers morals. The theory went that the Engineers took the xenos DNA because of its adaptability and modified it into the goo that we see, making it into a bio weapon. So the deacon was a genetic dead end, the neomorphs and protomorphs were David's first attempts at reverse engineering the goo bio weapon back into the Xenomorphs. But as we see he also was trying to control them as well and this is where the xenomorph hierarchy comes from in later films.

you finally got around to this one after a whole year since it came out I still like the film; so many fans complained about the lack of actual aliens and I didn't get a lot of answers but this one gave me more and I'm thankful for it Michael Fassbender still gives a tremendous performance playing two roles and the flute scene is impressive utilizing modern splitscreen techniques sucks Shaw died and we didn't get to see more of the Engineers but this was David's story and humans did create his whole God complex, they're responsible for all the carnage of creation of the Xenomorphs

did anyone else find it odd that every one on the crew was married to each other? I understand that a colonizing mission would have mostly if not all couples for the purpose of procreation but the odds of them all being qualified to work on a spaceship seems a bit far fetched to me. Also how does a regenerating android loose to another android without that ability.

I think a movie you may enjoy Decker, if you haven't seen it yet already, is Identity. I remember watching it quite some time ago and it was fairly entertaining IMO. Psychological horror/thriller (honestly not entirely sure what the difference between the two genre's is sometimes lol) with some interesting bits to it.

I really was expecting they would tell us more of the deacon alien in the ending of Prometheus rather than leaving us with the expanded universe version. Although I'm a bit sceptic on the direction that Scott is taking the series I hope in the long run it doesn't suck for the good of the frachise. I'm worried as well for the new film of Predator. Two of my favorite franchises right there.

unlucky for me that is the second alien movie i went into the cinmea for, the first one was "alien: ressurection", this one was even worse, all those points decker pointed out were glaring isues, aswell the seemingly need of doing hommages to aliens primerely like the scene whre some chars sitting next to photo of a forest scene and several others ... long story short: even though alien4 was a bad movie in its own rights, it still was entertaining, alien covenant was so bad i wanted to leave the theater midmovie;in particular as those morons left the shuttle without suits and stuff, i forced myself to see the rest o that movie just to see how bad it will get and i didn't got let down on that one, especially the fate of dr shaw was extremely poor handled and the psycho-robot david on top of all things
