Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia but it definitely is not that well visited by international tourists. Even though I only had one full day to check out the main attractions, I feel like I got a general feel for what the city is like and what you can expect when coming here. That old Soviet era sub was cool. There is a WW2 submarine in a park near here, I have been on it. And a while back I went to a commissioning ceremony for a new nuclear attack submarine. When I worked in shipbuilding I got in trouble for playing with a deck mounted torpedo launcher, I was spinning it round with a little hand crank and aiming it at a passing tug boat. It was fun but I almost got fired. 😆👍🇺🇸🇨🇦

As you said, Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia, very busy. So if you come to tourism objects around Surabaya, on weekday and at noon, it would be very empty. If you come during weekend nights, it will be crowded. Just take a look at Indonesian calendar, there is no holiday during weekday from September to December 2022. So people just very busy. I had gone to that Buddhist Temple before, and it's so crowded because of weekend during weeks of Imlek around February, Chinese New Year Holiday. I think you just unlucky.

Hi Alina, just to straighten out your information, the Battle of Surabaya is not between Indonesian nationalists vs Dutch colonialists, but against allied troops (British). Indonesians fought British troops because they brought a mission from NICA (Netherland Indische Civil Administration) to prepare for the arrival of Dutch colonial troops to Indonesia, which had just proclaimed its independence.

it's very rare tourists come to surabaya to travel. Kenjeran Park is more of a place of worship than a tourist destination. there were a lot of activities can be done there, such as airsoft gun arena, futsal, many other sports. but i don't know if they are still exist now. Many Indonesian like surabaya food. There are many very good food in surabaya

1. Kenjeran Park is DEFINITELY deserted. It was meant to house the Chinatown of Surabaya after it’s closure from Kembang Jepun Area, but it’s located far away from population centers. Now Chinatown is in Surabaya Barat. I wouldn’t go to Kenjeran unless for jogging around the area, definitely not meant to be for tourism, just locals (most “attractions” in Surabaya are meant for locals, because it’s not really a tourism destination”. 2. The highlight of Surabaya visit should be “Dining and Shopping”, currently there’s an effort to develop the Historical Tourism with revitalization of Tunjungan Area, so Heritage Tourism is the closest things you could get from Surabaya. I highly recommend the free Sampoerna Museum Bus Tour or stroll along the Tunjungan Street (from Siola Surabaya Museum to Balai Pemuda/Alun-Alun), stopping at Hotel Majapahit inbetween (there’s tour, I forget if free or not, I think you pay for the tour and get free High Tea or something). 3. Usually there’s special Events like Carnaval or Food Festival and you can check for dates on Surabaya City website. Best to visit the city as tourist during these events. 4. For food, try the various foodcourts scattered all over the city. Even the most sketchy looking ones often hid good food, or if you’re boujee you can just go to Surabaya Barat.

We were there last July 2022. The roads aren't as horribly crowded as Jakarta, but climate isn't any better. Travel up-mountain to Batu and Mt. Bromo for cooler climate. The Heroes Monument is overplayed. There was much confusion after the Japanese surrender. One hot-headed leader in Surabaya decided that Allied forces who arrived to keep the peace and disarm both Japanese soldiers and local revolutionaries planned to help the Dutch retake their colony. They murdered an unarmed British Officer who was touring the area. About 10 revolutionaries were killed in a later skirmish with U.S. forces, which is played as "attempted U.S. invasion" at the Monas Monument in Jakarta. Soekarno and Hatta rushed by plane to Surabaya to halt the ill-planned uprising. The Allies eventually let Japanese soldiers keep their arms to act as peacekeepers (how quickly things change). In truth, the U.S. helped Indonesia gain independence 4 years later when Congress threatened to cut off Marshall Aid to Holland if they continued trying to re-take their colony.

Yep, Indonesia buys both Russian and USA military equipment with some from India and S Korea over the last few years. ( their air force is a mix of F16's and Sukhoi fighters) Over the last few years they are buying more from the USA and S Korea due to Chinese intrusion into their national affairs. They also have bought commercial items from Russia. (trains, ships, etc) Sounds like the city is a smaller version of Jakarta but working on getting more tourists in with that large renovation to the park. It may or may not be a good future destination depending on what you want to see on a vacation.
