I’m from NC and I truly appreciate your coverage of this. One thing to mention: the US media seems to have forgotten about hurricane Maria. It killed over 2,500 people in Puerto Rico which is part of the US. That was the deadliest storm in US history. The media call this storm (Helene) the deadliest hurricane that has hit the **mainland** US. People need to remember that hurricane Maria existed and that Puerto Rico is still there and still recovering.

I live in Buncombe county. We’ve been the walking wounded. The beauty , the loss and the lack of compassion from those who were not in this dropped out of time pause. It’s heartbreaking to see so much loss, legacy and lack of support from the government. I personally lost my vehicle, my life’s work was in my vehicle, was moving to Marshall, we know that story. Unless you were in it you can never explain what we went through. Freeways gone, semis floating,, dead people in trees, that’s only a bit of it. But the support of this community and the kindness and compassion and generosity is so beautiful. It is an apocalyptic catastrophe . No WiFi, no gas, no food, no banks no power. SOS for 6 days. I’m alive and have to go see a family member. I will be back NC I love you . Everyone’s asking are you ok? When they are not ok. PTSD will surface when we’ve come up to realize the depth of this loss. Seeing what can never be unseen.

I’m so sorry for your indescribable loss. I will be praying heavy for you and all that is affected by this horrible tragedy. While I was watching this interview I was personally disgusted by these two and their fake empathy and downplaying, insensitive, underlying context. Like I’m pretty sure if people are writing in the ruble of mud SOS that means they need out of there completely. I’m no expert but it seems like everything completely washed down from the mountains so for those stuck up there are they just supposed to hang out under the few trees left for a few weeks/months until the water is all gone and they can just walk down from the mountains through all the additional ruble?? if you can drop massive containers of supply’s can you not drop a rope to save people?! And the helicopter pilot talking about leaving people behind entirely if they wouldn’t make the helicopter trip I mean I understand yes some wouldn’t make it but wouldn’t you come back to retrieve them either way? He made it sound like one trip to a place that likely had 20+ people they just grabbed 2-3 and didn’t feel like going back for another trip. Then right after that the interviews go on to talk about how those people were born there and lived their whole life there so they would rather die there and be comfortable with those left around them? What? Like maybe I’m not understanding but it really seems like they just want to make an interview to act like they are addressing that it is in fact a devastating level but they have done what they could do and there’s no need to go do anything further and I’m angry for you guys. I’m so sorry for the rant but my heart goes out to yall. I’m from Louisiana please if there’s anything I can send somewhere to help people personally in need of items please contact me let me know what I can do. I believe that many of these roads were built as part of the post world war 2 infrastructure initiative, the blue ridge parkway and much of the travel in the area was built up by artisans and local workers using local stone for curbs and I don't know it's hard to explain. There was an art museum on the parkway off tunnel road in Asheville that had exhibits on the building of these roads in the mountains. And when we were young we'd always go driving through the mountains like in the Fall to go buy apples, go to little shops and stuff like that. Roam around and spend all day doing it. ... I lived in Boone, Asheville, and Barnardsville for many years on and off during grad school and afterwards. But it's like you said the area relies heavily on tourism, and the infrastructure was built during a time in the US when we built great infrastructure using local workers and artists... I don't know if that kind of initiative can happen again....

Thank you for this in depth video and the importance of AM radio. Don't forget about HAM radio. Also, not everyone is capable of evacuation due to disabilities, lack of money because they live at the poverty level, many of these people don't own a car and have no way to evacuate. Our American troops are mostly overseas. They need to be brought back to home soil and we need more boots on the ground helping with this disaster. Where is the National Guard? Why are civilian helicopter operators being threatened with arrest for dropping food and evacuating victims? It will take YEARS for these hard hit areas to recover. They will never be the same. The sad truth is, we should expect this type of weather catastrophe to happen more than every 50 or 100 years. Florida has had 3 major tropical events within the past 2 years and another system is aiming for FL as I write this. ...and it's not just the US. These disasters are happening all over the world. We are not the masters of the earth. We are supposed to live in concert with nature. We've changed the natural order of things. The Earth is responding and we human beings are reaping what we have sewn… her wrath.

Homes and buildings must be rebuilt using concrete blocks and steel from the foundation, and they should have more than one story. Americans used too much wood so these homes were like boats. One resident said that she was in her house and noticed the trees moving when it was her house being floating. The Caribbean especially Jamaica has some great buildings using concrete and steel withstood hurricanes of wind 150mph which North Carolina will experience one day. People built their houses in river beds. Builders should be taken from Jamaica to assist with showing Americans how to rightly use concrete blocks and steel to build houses.

Hurricane force winds took out cell towers and power lines so comms and electricity are out. Downed trees also took out homes and blocked roads. 3’ of rain over 3 days shattered previous flood records and turned even innocuous creeks into raging rivers. The valleys where many roads ran adjacent to rivers were completely destroyed. Flooding took out entire towns and destroyed 2 of the major interstates that access the area. A mud slide took out a third interstate. Flooding at one point had blocked the forth. Mud slides from over saturated land took out homes and roads. Infrastructure for power and water along with water mains from water treatment facilities are destroyed. The roads to access many of these plants are blocked or no longer exist. How is Amateur Radio helping (HAM Radio)
@TheLampini3 ай бұрын
A lot. Lots of ham radio fans down there, thank god there's a lot of preppers too. 👍🏼

The technology is analogies, the wavelengths are capable of both coverage and distant reception, and the actual HAM Operators are junior (or greater) transmission and broadcast specialists. Oh, and they require far fewer geo synchronous low-earth-orbit satellites. It's a quiet strength which requires little more than ample growth in membership by younger operators, enthusiasts, and hobbyists.

Turns out there were a few locations! I had to look it up because I've been to the site in VA, which is STUNNING, and thought the same thing.

No he is correct, many of the scenes in the movie were filmed around Chimney rock. Also Last of the Mohicans was partly filmed in the area.

After seeing the atrocities and injustice happening in the middle east with the very help of god knows who, this feels like nothing in comparison and I can't feel sympathy, I am sorry.
@leeannarose63843 ай бұрын
@@KeliK1 that's understandable, but please know that most of the American people hate the the government is assisting in the genocide taking place there. The government here doesn't care about Americans either and are leaving these people to die while sending troops and billions of dollars to help Israel kill innocent people

That's ok I don't sympathize with you either.

Sure. Because Tom and Betty who are trying to survive on social security are deciding who bombs who around the world. Get your head on. We aren't driving this bus.

Maybe engineers need to consider building deep underground water systems, generators that cannot be damaged when extreme weather conditions occur. House need to be constructed away from rivers with robust foundations 🤔

Another QUESTION is.... How, HOW. does a "Hurricane" barrel UP A MOUNTAIN?? Not as a tropical storm, by the time it got there. But AS a "Cat 3 Hurricane"???? OF COURSE the people WAY UP IN THE MOUNTAINS didn't think they'd have to worry about "FLOODING" ON THE MOUNTAINS!! It's weather manipulation and it's EVIL 😞😡💔😭
