Indonesia to deploy more troops to troubled Papua region

Indonesia is preparing to deploy hundreds of soldiers to its eastern provinces in an effort to combat separatist groups.
Recent shoot-outs with armed fighters in Papua and West Papua have forced villagers to flee their homes.
There is now concern the government's decision to designate Papuan groups as terrorists may inflame tensions even further.
Al Jazeera’s Jessica Washington reports from Jakarta, Indonesia.

Most of Javanese (the majority ethnicity) do not know the real situations in Papua. Most of us never meet any native Papuan, let alone know their opinions. Some internet contents about this issue were blocked by the Indonesian government. I personally can not give any comments regarding to this conflict because of lack of balanced informations.

I have friends from Papua, they are great people. I was always told, that a lot of Papuans received full scholarships from the government with a monthly allowance of $2000, which is bigger than income for skilled engineers with years of experience.

@@TiberiumAusten the thing is, the so called independence may turn to be counter productive to papuans welfare. indonesia was under the rule of US-sponsored dictator from 1965 to 1998, and during his reign, 99% share of papuan resources exploited by the west (mostly Freeport McMoran mining company). Indonesia received 1% of the share, and all went to corrupted officials whom the west gave their blessings. it took 20+ years of bitter struggle for indonesia to divest freeport mcmoran's share and indonesia secured 51% of the share in 2018. only after the fall of the late-dictator, indonesia be able to start to boost civic infrastructures in papua for the sake of local populations welfare. the separatists in papua are nothing more than warlords who care nothing about public welfare and only care about their own political crusade. having them administrate papua, will certainly undo all the struggles to escape western economic neo-imperialism, as they would certainly let their resources being exploited by the west once more, in order to live lavishly among the impoverished population.

Let's not talk idealistically, but more pragmatic. In my opinion, Unitary republic is better for now, because of development inequalities. Frankly speaking, not all elected regional leaders are competent and have upright bureaucracy. They have autonomy in some extent, but they still need central government guided development, notably the bureaucracy reformation. We could consider federal republic if every single region can manage and improve themselves independently better. I'm not anti federal republic, but look at the reality, not every region is rich or have growth mentality.

@@abcddef2112 it surely is, but considering that most indonesians are much more ready and united that it ever was, i dont think theres anything wrong with federalism.. in federalism theres a lot of decentralisation and less java-centric development, inequality will be lesser and each provinces has its own power and autonomy.. it might have failed in the 50s but remember at the time disintegration is at the highest and it is a direct threat to the creation of a united indonesia, and considering the high level of anti-dutch perception at the time, no wonder federalism failed its just my opinion, but frankly i believe so much that federalism is the right way than unitary state.. unitary is just... VERY java-centric.. right now everyone seems to be unabated by it, but when one by one becomes clear then everything might stumble

If you wanna understand the real situation from Indonesia perspective READ THIS ONE! As Indonesian, i think this news is misspresent the bigger picture. You need to understand the situation in Indonesia for conclude this sensitive issue. Lets say Indonesia had more than 800 etnic groups and debatable 14.000 to 17.000 islands. While 60% of Indonesia living in Java Island. 40% are Javanese, 20% are Sundanese (still etnic in Java Island), 40% are others (these peoples living outside of Java Island). Noted (I m not Javanese, I m a minority of Medanese) Take it aside, from History because of the ancient sea silk road (Malaka strait) there are two islands who got benefited the most and so, more advancing in civilization (Sumatra and Java Islands/ west of Indonesia). This is why, the more you going east of Indonesia, the more slow civilization you will see. And the most east of Indonesia is Papua, and thats why there was no kingdom or big civilization in Papua, bcz they were isolated from ancient time. But now, aside bcz of lack of knowledge of history and wisdom. Some of etnic groups thinking that Indonesia to much favoring Java island or Javanese bcz of advance civilization that they see in present and ignoring the history. But i dont mean there s no such a thing like goverment favoring Java island or Javanese, there are, but not as dire as they think. For the example, our founding father can actually make a Javanese language as national language but they not made that way (while the majority of pre Indonesia were Javanese), but they instead used Bahasa--the language that an offspring of Malaya/Malaysia--for the fairness to others etnic groups. In the other case, in the inverstor perspective, they mostly investing on Java Island bcz of Java Island is the most populated one compare to other islands. And this is make the civilization more advance, and make the situation worse. In other hand, peoples of javanese now, out of ignorant of history and wisdom, taking the diversity for granted. Some of them they spreading out to across Indonesia for seek opportunities on other islands (with no mean to do evil). In their thought, well these island is still one nation of theirs, so why not right? The native group of the island seeing this as a threat, like Javanese will start conquerig their motherland. And so some of peoples start a racist act against Java, like one of the case Maluku, Papua, etc. On the other hand, bcz of the ignorant of Javanese. the thing is, the so called independence may actually turn to be counter-productive to papuans welfare. indonesia was under the rule of US-sponsored dictator from 1965 to 1998, and during his reign, 99% share of papuan resources exploited by the west (mostly Freeport McMoran mining company). Indonesia received 1% of the share, and all went to corrupted officials whom the west gave their blessings. it took 20+ years of bitter struggle for indonesia to divest freeport mcmoran's share and indonesia secured 51% of the share in 2018. only after the fall of the late-dictator, indonesia be able to start to boost civic infrastructures in papua for the sake of local populations welfare. the separatists in papua are nothing more than warlords who care nothing about public welfare and only care about their own political crusade. having them administrate papua, will certainly undo all the struggles to escape western economic neo-imperialism, as they would certainly let their resources being exploited by the west once more, in order to live lavishly among the impoverished population.

And we admit it as a mistake by our second president, who also known for mass killing of communism ex-supporters. But Papua is different matter. You know there are several separatist group and they not recognize each other as legitimate. Also killing the unarmed should've been avoided if they intend to be independent. How can they want independence if they aren't united nor embrace fellow Papuans? Because they are not fighting for freedom, they just want to build tyranny among themselves. In my opinion, the US company gold mine exploitation is our mistake in the past. And we try to solve it carefully without angering US. We can't totally expel the company from Papua. The only way to stop this Human Rights problem and violence in Papua is to stop violent terrorist groups. the rebel terrorist kiling people and arson, but when Indonesian army arrest them, they dont admit that they are part of that terrorst grup and accusing Indonesian military for unlawfull arrest. one of other cases where a guy being suspected of terrorist group questioned by the police ,he jump and try to take police gun, of course police need to shoot him, but then police accused of human rights abuse.
