Just a note on Ear Plugs/Foamies, To get proper protection you have to extend your ear with your other hand while inserting them into your ear canal. Most people, and I have been guilty of it too, just push them in with one hand and leave it at that. Yes, that works to some degree but it's not giving you the full NRR protection that it was designed to do. So, if you want to be able to hear your Grand Babies make those cute little infant sounds, wear your hearing protection properly. As Eric said, Once it's gone, it's gone. So protect your self. Note that even with doubling up, a certain amount of bone conduction still brings the "shock and awe" into your ears through the bones in your face. So for really heavy loads, big muzzle brakes, etc there may be no choice but limiting your round count per session if you want to avoid damage. Learned this from a friend who is a audiologist. This does not mean that hearing protection doesn't work - it absolutely does, and you are crazy not to use it! Just be aware that even the best measures are not 100% protection when it gets to the loudest, most violent sound impulses.

Linear compensators on all my rifles the last couple years and even my AR10 I’ve had to go out and dispatch a coyote on the fly without ear pro and no ringing ears it’s really amazing how the linear compensator doesn’t make the gun whiter but projects the sound forward of the shooter. I have now the linear comps on all my rifles they have one that you can thread off for a regular compensator but it has a blast can that screws over the comp and man that works so good. Would highly recommend makes your ears not be ringing for hours after a quick unplanned shot. In Vietnam we would bury small connex boxes in the berm around the mountain I was on, and cut gun ports in them for bunkers. Try shooting a few hundred rounds with an M60 in a metal box while someone on each side of you is shooting their M14 or M16. I finally learned to break off cigarette filters and make ear plugs with them in Vietnam. My ears still ring louder than most people talk, and understanding speech gets harder every year. Hearing aids just make the tinnitus worse if I wear them longer than a few hours. Take care of your ears!
@BriGuyIT2 жыл бұрын
I work in a datacenter where loud sustained noise levels are part of everyday life and have worked in factories where its even louder. What many people do not understand is that hearing damage is PERMANENT. Hearing aids can help, but there is no surgery or drugs that can repair your hearing once has it been damaged, and it can be a gradual process that you may not know is even happening to you. I double up on hearing protection with foam plugs and earmuffs regardless if I'm indoors or outdoors.
@nirfz2 жыл бұрын
Fully agree. But there's another thing people might underestimate: I was at a concert almost 20 years ago, and i didn't realize beforehand how loud it would be. (the loose fabric of my pants around my calfs was moving substantially by the sound pressure.) For around 3 days afterwards i had constant loud random noise on my ears impacting my hearing a great deal. Luckily it went away after that, but i would not count on that working a second time. And i certainly don't want that experience again. So i'd say one might be lucky once but should not rely on that.

One of the loudest noises I've ever heard was a MCLC rocket. I had no clue how loud a 6ft long, 3-4in diameter rocket could be. The kicker is that rockets aren't like gunshots, it's like a gunshot, if the bang lasted 2-3 seconds.

As a gunner, you wear pretty good elecronic ones with com connected to the AA gun, but everyone else around was wearing double ear protection. (loader, range officers, guy watching close buy...) The funniest earprotection i have come across was during conscript time at night shooting: One guy had a pair of luminescent foamies. They glowed green. You can't not laugh when in the dark you see two green dots in head height float around. (It was really dark, but his glowing foamies were clearly visible from quite a distance.)

It’s kind of funny I bought a set of electronic ear protection years ago when I worked in a steel plant to see if I could get better hearing protection than wearing ear plugs while still being able to hear a conversation with other coworkers and the amount of background noise just caused them to cancel sound constantly and basically made them no better than a set of muffs in that situation so I just used them at the range.

I use the Walker's Quad Connect bluetooth earpro. Most electronic earpro have 2 mics, one in each ear muff. They are somewhat directional. You will hear best what's in front of you. If you are in an indoor range's shooting bay, you likely aren't facing the shooting partner who's standing behind you and off to the side. Drove me nuts trying to hear what my dad and my friends were saying when we went to the range. The Quad Connects have 4 mics, two per ear muff. They pic up sounds far better and are not directional. Best set of earpro that I've found. Now, I just need to find me some good inner earpro for doubling them up. Tried the Axil stuff, garbage dipped in dog sh*t, and of course foamies, but nothing is quite comfortable beneath the larger ear muffs.

Retired after a career in metal fabrication and noisy hobbies, not always using adequate hearing pro, I have high frequency loss in both ears, worse in the left, and tinnitus that is a 10 khz tone that only goes unnoticed when I’m asleep. My favorite verbal response in conversation is ……….“what?” Wear your ear pro.

I have really sharp ears in spite of having tinnitus for as long as I can remember. Certain sounds physically hurt while the people around me seem to think they’re normal. Ear protection is definitely an essential. I have questions about eye protection and shooting when you need prescription glasses to see far away. Would love to see a discussion about that since you gentlemen wear glasses too.

Sharp sounds are a symptom of tinnitus, it progressively gets worse.

Avoid Ibuprofen. It triggers my tinnitus.

@@SuspiciousGanymede don’t I know it. As a kid I hated my parents taking the family to restaurants with the tvs because The feedback whine was annoying but most other sounds didn’t bother me. As an adult I had a boss I had to hold my hands over my ears to listen to during meetings, that man was loud. But I can still hear a conversation at about twice the distance of most people, constantly catching my coworkers off guard when I do that.

Would be interested in the glasses video too! I remember when i first got glasses my optition told me his view of the difference between plastic and glass lenses apart from weight: "You won't scratch the glass lenses, but you won't ever break the plastic lenses. So do you want break resistance or scratch resistance?" I know from my own experience that prescription glasses are not in any way keeping eyes proteted from metal debris like when using a Dremel. (Wasn't fun to get a tiny metal splinter picked out of my eye and then the whole "dremeled" out by the eye doctor) And yet, puttin protective glasses over the prescription ones and wearing over the ear ear protection just hurts and doesn't work for me. (It's possible for things close up like working with loud power tools, but not for shooting.) I might not hear as good as you do, (and luckily i don't have tinitus) but my ears are pretty sensitive for volume too. If i put headphones into my Macbook i have to put the volume on the lowest possible setting or most YT videos hurt my ears. (Movie theaters are almost too loud for me, and the volume in clubs/discos my ears just cant take so i always avoided those etablissements)

NRR rating isnt calculated by just the sum of each individual rating. you cant just do 30+20 and say you have a 50db reduction.
