I remember always arguing with my Grandma about speakers. While I was more of a fan of the Creambacks and their slightly more vintage sound, she always loved the brighter sound of the Vintage 30's like the ones used on the first 3 "Decapitated Goat" albums. "Those V-30's are more METAL than your Nana's hip replacement!" she'd say to me. Often times we would get into fist fights over which speaker would be better suited as just a "blender" tone. But I must say, she always stuck to her guns and never compromised her values. I'd always tell her, "Nana, one of these days that brutal death metal tone is gonna kill you!" And then one day...it did. Rest In Peace, Nana. 😢

Amazing video, thanks! One thing that I like about darker speakers is that we can rise the highs at the amp and get that "gain/distortion effect" that some amps have with that knob, without the guitar sounding thin on a band situation
@phantomflame06582 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely thats exactly what I love about dark speakers. We can crank the hell out of the presence knob which gives you this airiness when playing clean, and this huge grind when playing heavy gain. This is why the g12m-65 is my all time favourite speaker
@phantomflame06582 жыл бұрын
I have the g12m-65 and its an absolute beast of a speaker. The main thing everyone misses is they try to A/B it with a v30 or t75 or H75 and no wonder it sounds super muddy and dark. I like how you changed mic positions to give it a chance, but I believe the real difference is cranking the Presence knob. Since its a dark speaker, you can run super aggressive settings that you wouldn't normally be able to get away with. In high gain metal you can achieve an incredible GRIND that is out of this world. I tried the outro song in drop A on my Tokai explorer with EMG85x bridge pickup, into MXR Sugar Drive as boost, into Egnater Renegade amp, into g12m-65. Unreal tone, so heavy

I've been pondering an upgrade to the speakers in one of my 4x12 cabs and the Creamback G12H-75's and V-30's were the top contenders. It was super helpful to hear them A/B'd and has definitely helped me make my decision (going with the Creambacks because I already have a Mesa 4x12 full of V-30s). Awesome video as always!

I did the same thing and replaced half my V-30s with G12H-75 Creambacks. Big improvement! But when I split the wiring and compare the two speaker types, I find myself liking the G12H-75 Creambacks a lot better than my V-30's so now I'm thinking about swapping the other V-30's for H Creambacks or Alnico Creams. More on that as soon as I can afford more Creambacks or Alnico Creams.

The V30 and Creamback M is an amazing combo m very balanced and fat sounding but surprisingly clear. The combo of the creamback M low mids and V30 upper mids is a very full and balanced tone . The top end has a nice bite but is also rounded and smooth. The V30 bass keeps the somewhat loose bass of the creamback in check . It's an amazing pair for vintage tone where you need higher powered speakers. This paring is also very vocal sounding and has alot of Character . It's a good combo to split the difference between vintage and modern but does lean more towards vintage. The creamback M and H paired is Pure vintage .

I may be alone on this, but I liked the blend of the Neo with the V30. I could tell when you played an example through the blend that it would translate well in a full mix. That being said, a lot of these are situational, meaning that different speakers and/or mic positions may suit different guitars (6, 7, 8 string-etc) moods, and even different guitar players, depending on the situation. It also never hurts to experiment, if you have time on a project to do so. Thanks Kohle for this amazing video, let the metal and the music flow!

It’s never as simple as it seems. The guitar, pickups, amp, cabinet, effects, musical style all play into the sound.

I really do appreciate your commentary on the speakers. You have really good flow and dont try to use unnecessarily sophisticated or "big sounding" terms which tends to make videos lag and takes away from the content context regarding sound and cohesiveness in having a clear understanding as a viewer. You just get straight to the point in a clear and cohesive manner that gives a good visual image of how a sound might translate to preference or style. A+ in that regard Now, although your descriptions of the V30 and the H Creamback were spot on, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the M-65 watt Creamback. You are correct in that it has a "darker" sounding presentation than the other 2, but I would argue that darkness only applies to the upper midrange bite and in-your-face presence. It actually has MORE upper end clarity or "air" than the H Creamback by a long shot and I would argue, having that alone, puts it in a more similar tonality for the highs as the V30 as opposed to the H-75 watt version- which, to me, has the non-smooth upper midrange bite or bark that I dont like minus a bit of the V30 "sizzle" or (more appropriately) "brilliance". To me, the M-65 basically scoops the upper mid bark and bite and then picks back up at the tip top of the brilliance range that the V30 overachieves with and has a similar upper high register that gives them both a sense of openness or airy top end quality, just more laid back with the M-65 since it still scoops some of that V30 brilliance i mentioned. I personally hate the H-75 but I feel as though a hybrid cab of equal parts V30 and M-65 speakers might be the answer to having a great all around rhythm tone, especially for some tight but thick, full bodied thrash that is not tuned far down. The M-65 can add the lower midrange fullness that the V30 lacks as well as balance out the sizzle of the V30 to a more balanced level as a result of the scoop there with the M-65 Creamback as well as its very textured midrange. Perhaps this only can really apply to, say, C tunings or higher whereas a strict V30 setup would still reign king for anything lower. For perspective, another way to think about the positive the Creamback 65 watt can bring to the V30 for metal- is the fact that its OG version (similar sounding too), simply the G12-65 heritage model, was THE speaker used for the entirety of Metallica's Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets albums, among many other 80s metal acts as well. Jim Marshall loved them and all but made them exclusive as the driver option in the Marshall cabinets from that late 70s and 80s era. I'd be fairly confident in trying that mix i mentioned above. Instead of people trying to replace the V30 for its excessive sizzle, its most likely a better option to throw either that M-65 in with it or the heritage G12-65. The 75 sucks, though, in every iteration, for my tastes 😂👍🏻👍🏻 Again, thanks for your comparisons and I will check out some more of your stuff based on your style of presenting, even if solely on that, which I doubt will end up being the case. Excellent job, good sir👍🏻😊🤘🏻

First of all - great presentation as usual. About a year ago I was looking for a replacement of the Celestion V-type, which was fitted to my Marshall by default and unfortunately raped my ears with exaggerated high frequencies. After a deeper research, I chose G12M Creamback just due to its vintage character. I mainly play classic rock, so this speaker worked best for me. Well, maybe it's time to build a 2x12 cab ;) Anyway, I highly recommend the creambacks M and H.

@@lucianorosario5851 Great question. Actually, the speaker really helped with the mud in the low end. To my ears, it tightens up the low end and brings up the hi-mids. I suppose one could still get some nasty zizel, if presence and/or treble are too high.

It is slightly wider to accommodate my Marshall sitting on it and slightly deeper because they tuned it to give you a 4x12 resonance /thump. I am surprised because the sound doesn't seem at all compromised. It's a proper baltic birch cab. Cab and speaker together was $440.00 USD ..not bad!!!

The shitty thing with your skills and ears is, all of these sound awesome! Yes, they have a different character but man! Anyone should be and would be more than happy with these sounds and this level of production! Thanks for sharing!

I'm not doing any magic here! It's just a 57 and a pair of ears.

@@KohleAudioKult I know! That's what makes you great! (I'm not sucking up here, I just genuinely like how you hear)

I have here an Celestion Creamback NEO for combo JCM 50/25. But the combo is out for repairs (tubes and so on ...) ... I might be interresting how the Creamback compares to a G12H Anniversity. Thx for your usable comparsions!

Dang. I liked that H magnet version a lot. I guess I know what I'm sticking in the disconnected spot on one of my 4x12s. Thanks for the comparison, Kristian!

When you got to the trem picked part of the song, I couldn't help but feel like the M version would be great if you were making something in the Deafheaven - "Sunbather" ballpark.

I love the G12M-65, but I'm also really into doom so when you called that out later in the video I felt justified! Can't get enough speaker videos Kohle

Just watched the Jensen Tornado SE shootout, and noticed you had to move the mic further out on that too. Is it the neodymium speakers have more mids further out?

Stimmt. Liegt irgendwo dazwischen!

I definitely was surprised at how much mids the H75 had! Everyone seems to say it’s scooped but your analysis seems to prove otherwise.

Interesting... I wasn't liking the tone of the G12m all that much by itself, but in the mix it definitely gels better. I would only dial more treble or presence for extra sizzle, but that's my taste.

The Marshall Vintage speakers are interesting too, kinda like the missing link between the Greenback and V30. Anyway, fab video as always and I can't wait to mess around with the Creamy Bois.

This really helped with my dilemma of which speakers to load in my new cab. Thanks!

Wie immer hammer video und nen echt interessanter Vergleich. Nehmen grade unser erstes Album auf und der creamback würde doch noch mal für einen etwas interessanteren Klang an den Gitarren sorgen 🤔

You did it - you compared Creambacks! 🤩 I'm an M guy and would love to hear it in combination with the V30 (making it more round/fat?) and in coparison with the DV-77! But just yesterday 2 DV-77 arrived (yes, that's your fault ;-)) and will find their place in an Orange cab with V30s. Rock ON!

Haha! Enjoy the 77s!

Great shoot out, I liked either of the normal magnet but thought the neo was a bit mmmm not for me. And yes I would love to take the speaker from you! 😀

Great video. Thx. For me i don't like the Neo, if I had a 2x cab I'd probably combine the H and M and blend. Keep up the great work.
