Matthew Kelly He reviewed Rogue One and Episodes VII and VIII as The Nostalgia Critic, but not as himself during Disneycember. I think he did review Hocus Pocus as both himself and the NC, so I don't think reviewing those movies as the NC would necessarily prevent him from doing a regular Disneycember review as himself. Considering the divisiveness Episode VIII has, especially with people putting more emphasis on the negatives, I think it would be fresher to have him do a review where he takes the middle ground and talks about both the positives and negatives of the movie.

"You can't marry a man you just met", "You got engaged to someone you just met that day?!", ect, ect, they keep hammering it home over and over again, it's really heavy-handed. I'm sorry but for Monsters University; did you not noticed what the Dean said to Mike & Sully, that shows why she doenst like them? Well first they broke the canister of her first scream she got, then pointed out to Mike he is not scary enough, and Sully doesn't care about doing the right scare, being careless basically. You did the samething with "Holes", how you didn't really understand the entire plot, and reason for Camp Green Lake.

I feel like the reason so many people were going crazy over Big Hero 6 had at least a bit to do with Frozen. After Frozen, I think so many people were waiting to see what Disney would cook up next as far as their animated films go. I think Disney could have literally made anything, like a movie about a talking turd, and people would have been gushing over it because they were still wearing rose tinted glasses from the previous movie. Frozen was kind of the peak of the second Disney Renaissance and I think that lead to people having a lot of hype for whatever was going to come after, or for something to come out and top Frozen, which already had big shoes to fill. I think after a few more releases, people started to realize nothing was gonna top Frozen (hell not even Frozen 2) and everyone finally calmed down. Even I was super hyped for Big Hero 6 just on the notion that "omg a movie from the guys that brought us Frozen" and I loved it at first. But yeah looking back on it, it wasn't anything special. Still a good movie, but not nearly as amazing as some made it out to be initially.

Instead of Maleficent being a "good fairy" who turns evil because her wings get cut off, how about...she was just evil from the beginning. Maybe the other fairies are so stupid because she's keeps casting a spell on them to make them stupid. What if instead of her boyfriend cutting off her wings because money, he discovered just how evil she was and cuts off her wings because...while she's evil, he still found himself loving her and couldn't outright kill her. Hell, that little bit would make Maleficent a bit more interesting. Because she'd be evil, yet, be able to pour out just enough love and care to make someone fall in love with her. Hell, one could let her leave him alive and have Maleficent do an inner monologue whether she should kill him or not. From there, you could have her try and kill Charming and fail somehow...or you could even have her NOT do the end of the spell. Although, she tells the king his daughter will wake up and prick her finger and fall asleep, maybe Snow White doesn't fall asleep. Maybe, if you'd want to do the Frozen twist, you could have Maleficent come in randomly and kiss her awake. Yeah, many more interesting ways to write it.

This is where Doug and i always disagree. He always frames the old films as if they are something great. As if the original maleficent and the original sleeping beauty are actually that good. Maleficent is evil. Big whoop. A character motivated by just pure evil can work in cases like the joker where it feels likes there is something deeper, that is hinted at through vague lines and fantastic acting(ledger’s version) But with the original maleficent it just feels like shes evil for the sake of evil. Which to me, isnt a scary or interesting concept because i know thats not how people work. Her “evil” isnt even that evil. She does some shitty things to a king. Its not like she commits genocide or rape or something truly horrific like that. She’s not menacing in the original and shes certainly not well developed. I thought maleficent did a great job of subverting all of that and giving us something heartfelt and interesting. Doug also frequently tries to make a distinction betweeen “adult, and childish” or “simple and complex” Specifically when he was talking about nightmare before Christmas. NO the characters arent explored in the greatest of detail. But we get such a clear understanding of their lives and of the world that they live in that the simplicity FEELS complex. With so little content we get such a clear understanding of everything thats going on in the film. And there are even a few little details that make it clear that Burton understood the film more than we do. Which is something i really appreciate. And when it comes to adult vs childish i think thats a distinction that makes logical sense but when you think about it more it kinda falls apart. As an example; take adventure time. That show is full of adolescent humor and internet humor, but at its core it offers a much deeper and much more powerful view into what it means to be alive. This is what so many kids shows and movies can do. And i think that saying its more “family friendly” discounts what can frequently be ingenious writing, ideas and execution. Honestly its why, i, an adult, prefer animation to live action because animation(both targeted to younger audiences and targeted to older audiences) Can do something that on its surface seems very simplistic but hides a much darker and much more powerful message, and idea. Animation isnt as limited in what it can accomplish because we go into animation expecting something simplistic. They dont look like people, so when they act like people it can be surprising. It also allows them to do wacky and crazy things while maintaining that crucial element of humanity

For differing points of view, of course, but that is just gut punching.

Sorry to be 'that guy' but one tiny nitpick: In the Monsters University review, you said that there wasn't any reason why the Dean didn't like Mike and Sully, but it was because they broke the casing of her prized scream energy thing (the equivalent to students breaking the Dean's prized trophy or something). You played the video from that clip while you were speaking, so I'm guessing you probably noticed the mistake in post and played that clip to show you noticed it? Again, sorry to nitpick, just felt it was worth mentioning.

I remember that I was reminded strongly of Dick Tracey when Sin City came out, though like stark contrasts of the other in terms of colour they both have that oddly cartoony in real life element. That said, those are probably the only two films I can think of like them.

None of the Muppet movies are direct-to-video.

If you want a Cowboy movie with Johnny Depp that isn't the Lone Ranger, you should see Rango. It's a great movie, and both are directed by the same guy.

I think why the redemptions is ok in Once upon time is because The Evil Queen/Regina is given reason to why she did her actions z though not saying she never did anything wrong like in Maleficinet life action but still felt as for her actions in the present day which is why she's able to redeem herself

I remember seeing the Lone Ranger in cinemas but I couldn't remember what it was about. All I could remember was me and my family walking out of the cinema having kind of enjoyed it. We like Johnny Depp, and we thought the jokes were pretty funny, although again I don't remember what they were. So yeah, kind of funny but not memorable.
