The most self-sabotage host country entry has to be Ireland 1995. RTE would be dead at the prospect of hosting Eurovision for a fourth time in a row.

2 fun facts about some of these Swedish entries. 1. Our Swedish entry 1992 by Christer Björkman. He is actually the boss of melodifestivalen and helps alot with creating Eurovision too. 2. In 2016 we sent Frans to lose but came fifth place. We literally had an interval act song called "Everything's Eurovisions fault" and was basically the way of saying, don't vote on someone who will win and was the reason we sent Frans haha

I feel like the host entries (especially modern day entries) send something really original as they don't have the pressure of qualifying for the final. For instance, one of my favourite host entries is Mamo, Russia would never send a Russian language song today for fear of not qualifying.

Also, I'm giving my self sabotage Roxen point to Sweden 1975. We had two other songs ("Bang-A-Boomerang" by Svenne & Lotta, and "Michelangelo" by Björn Skifs) that could've easly win the Eurovision, but instead we selected "Jennie, Jennie", which was *not* the best one we had that year.

It is very interesting though that Melodifestivalen and the ESC were really controversial here in Sweden in 1975. There were a lot of anger from small but loud left-wing groups to the point that Lasse Berghagen needed security to be safe from attacks. And even the executives at TV complained about how expensive this was going to be. So all in all, there was less joy about the fact that we hosted the ESC for the first time than there should have been. To keep all of the complainers happy, Sweden even skipped the contest in 1976. 😒

Thank you for producing this video Luke. Here are some host songs which I feel were self-sabotage songs (or as I tend to call them, suicide songs): Ireland 1995 - to me it sounds quite dull / sleepy song; I've often wondered if they sent that to try and finish last with 0 points and get relegated from taking part in 1996. Put it this way, after 3 years of winning and thus hosting, I get the impression they certainly didn't want to win for the 4th year running. Sweden 2000 - I don't think much of "When Spirits Are Calling My Name" - it's clearly one they wanted to get a reasonable score (enough to keep their 5 year average high enough to qualify for 2001) but definitely not win. Ukraine 2005 - to me it sounds like a protest chant, they clearly didn't want to win again. Ukraine 2017 - another song which clearly had no hope of top 10 let alone winning. Put it this way, I thought it was a poor effort compared to several of their other songs from the preceding 10 years. Portugal 2018 - a poor effort compared not just to their 2017 runaway winning song, but also some of their other entries over the years (even some of their non-qualifying entries). Netherlands 2020 - nothing like as good as "Arcade" in 2019. I don't think this would have qualified from the semi-finals. Since you made this video, the ESC 2021 has been and gone. How would you rate the 2021 Dutch entry Jeangu Macrooy "Birth of a New Age"?

I actually agree with you on your Roxen points. Even though there are some others, where I had my doubts if it was self sabortage or not. Norway 2010 should have sent A1; just in my opinion. (They came 2nd in the national final with I Don't Want To Lose You Again) Love your enthusiasm towards most of the songs(Luxembourg 1984, Jugoslavia 1990 and Denmark 2001+2014 to name a few) and your reaction to Sweden 1975 Jennie Jennie was hillarious 😂
