😲Eamon! While you guys did a GREAT job with everything, I *Highly* recommend talking to a carpenter friend about adding in 2 more 4x4 posts and another crossbeam instead of using the old shed as support for that entire other side. That shed is built to hold the weight of just the shed roof and snow load...now you added a TON of snow load and wind load onto the shed, without a steep angle to shed snow, and when snow falls in the masses it will collapse under the weight of the snow (trust me, I had a family member do just what you did, his vehicle and the shed were destroyed). Especially with those Canadian winters. You put in all that hard work, I don't want it being destroyed. Aside from that, amazing job on everything!! From the dryer vent to the metal and wood shed, awesome job!!! Bec doing a fantastic job as well!! Congrats on the new house. And anyone reading this who are carpenters weigh in on the two extra 4x4s.
@abunbun4 жыл бұрын
Also, be SURE to tie down your Costco carport, it WILL blow away unless you attach all legs, and lastly when your Costco carport canvas cover is destroyed, get metal roofing and drill holes to screw it on, two of them side by side are better. We have gone through MANY before realizing this. Now ours have lasted decades.
@helenaveyard20614 жыл бұрын
I've had a wood stove similar to yours for years. I found the best way to keep it going is to get it started with a big flame for about 20mins then once it's settled, put a few big logs on and turn the vents/airflow right down. The fire should be just glowing rather than roaring. It'll still heat the house, but not waste wood. If you have a fire with a big flame all the time, you'll run through your wood too quickly. Great videos guys, I'm really enjoying everything!
@eamonandbec4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this super helpful tip Helen!! Much appreciated!
@emsalsa93854 жыл бұрын
For sure! Hardwood is key for that glow. Also, for next year, look into buying entire tree trunks and cutting and splitting them on your own in the spring and then it has the summer to dry out. It's cheaper where I"m from to buy full tree trunks and maybe there too? Another thought: it's never a bad idea to create a fire line around your house by cutting back some too-close trees and bushes, and to store the wood a ways off, especially with fire season getting worse every year.
@peacefulreiki4 жыл бұрын
I would STRONGLY suggest to add some beams set at 45° degree angle to create some triangles between the roof and the pillars (both on the side and in the front) of the wood structure you built. Without these very resilient triangles, any building will just tilt as soon as some lateral forces will be applied. This is how you keep such a structure structurally sound despite wind gushing from the side or heavy snow accumulating on top. Look at any wooden building they have these for a reason :) (It's called "contreventement" in French)
@sketch26204 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with this. Also, would insulate that wall near your wood-stove. You can't add any more inside, because it's required to be 18" from wall, but you can double the thickness of that wall outside your cabin. Throw on a 4'x8' panel of foam, cover it with a sheet of plywood, and beautify the bottom half with a few of those rocks that you demolished from yer wood-stove's previous location.

On the Down side , be careful to keep wet snow off the carport tarp -- it rips. Also, after a couple years it wears -- and rips. On the plus side, when the canvas does rip, replace it with Polycarbonate Roof Panels because the metal frame will still be good. 3. An after-thought: that dump had a lot of wood, especially pallets - so possibly you could scavenge some of it if you don't really need pristine boards...maybe?

After being a log cabin owner there was a lot of rot happening on our logs. It’s good to know you aren’t dealing with logs, just siding. Your vent looks great! Especially for DIY! Did you know they actually make a ventless washer/dryer combo? I have one for my small urban dwelling and I love it! Too late now....the vent hole is in! As far as exterior goes...Big Stretch caulking and paint stain will be your friend come spring!

1st, Eamon be careful with the hole saw! You can break your wrist with one of those. Better positioning for leverage is what it’s all about! 2nd, you kids need some insulation! Stay safe and stay warm! Loving your new adventure! So great to see Bob again!

Bye Eamon and Bec,good job this week,I hope you are happy in your cabin,I know what it is like moving all over the World as I married a soldier who was in a regiment where families travelled to countries together, it was amazing the whole regiment moved as one,but it was always ace to come home after years or months away .I always felt like kissing the ground.So I hope this kind of feeling finds you when you come home to your Cabin in the woods.God Bless from Carol in the UK

After all your precise work renovating the van, it's amazing that you're "winging it" building the shed, etc. Measure twice, cut once!😁💜💙💚😁

Nice lean-to, love it. big fan of creating cheap & practical storage space. Consider adding some angled corner braces in the corners. 2x8's with lag bolts add tons of strength, so won't twist under snow weight. Peace!

Bec! You are the best! Thank you for leaving the footage of you testing the outdoor water tap!100% something I would have done! Also, I would burn 3-4 face cords of wood during the winter months (on the other side of the “pond”,Rochester, NY) as supplemental heating in house. I kept my house at 62df and used wood to heat further! Wood so nice, heats ya twice. But in reality after chopping, stacking, and then loading into the house and then burning it, it’s actually like 4 times! 🙌 I love seeing your progress! Home owning is hard and you two are killing it!

The best part is watching you install your dryer ... While I'm at the laundromat. I totally understand how amazing that must feel, congrats! Side note, I remember backing up trailers. An easy thing I did was, grip the bottom of the steering wheel, palms facing up, and point your thumbs. Now turn the wheel the direction you want the trailer to go, using your thumbs.

First, Bob wearing his poppy is the sweetest thing I've ever seen in my life. I LOVE that man. Second, you guys should probably put the CO2 sensor at floor height considering CO2 doesn't rise the way smoke does. Smoke detector on the ceiling, CO2 sensor at the base board.

Hello friends 😊 I am a newish subscriber of your channel...basically since the pandemic hit 😢 Good news is that I am really enjoying your content and video editing!! We also have a woodstove for our cold Canadian winters! One thing that I love doing is placing an old pot on the woodstove with water and cinnamon in it. The house always smells wonderful and we are putting moisture back in the house so we don't get nose bleeds. Wood stoves can make everything too dry sometimes. Sending much love and kindness to you both 🥰

I loooove these cabin videos! Been exploring the concept of cabin life these last months, and your videos are so perfect for showing a more modern cabin life, not just a log cabin without electricity or water in the middle of the woods. Keep it up, I would watch this all day if I could! xx

I'm always a little........ apprehensive about folks with established KZbin content when they switch gears. It's not by your design, but this is the way the world is right now, and I have to applaud you for transitioning to another adventure that has kept me riveted. You are in a completely new situation, yet your style and Bob's presence are anchoring the channel nicely. Great edit Bec 💚. And great song choices 💚. #iloveaemonandbec

the trailer plug pulling out from vehicle has happened to me twice on the same trailer (second time after just replacing) found it was getting caught up and on full lock didnt have enough slack to vehicle and ripped from vehicle and dragged all the way home. :) do yourself a favor also - get yourself a good quality petrol saw, electric is great and i have a little 18v for tiny jobs but you need the power and chain speed of a petrol, wood cutting is now part of your life so get the right tools to make life easier - Kudos for wearing the chaps sawing in a prior video, with chainsawing with a petrol saw even hot weather i treat it like motorbike riding ATGAT (all the gear all the time). When using electric saw with 1/5th of the chain speed and smaller tasks i skip the chaps. loving this new era of watching the property progress.
