Cabin life has me looking forward to Sunday and your next upload even more than Van life did! Love the new content guys, it's so fun going along on this renovation journey with you. TO EAMON: So much manly man stuff going on lately, from building structures to braving snake-infested crawl spaces, you're making me feel a bit inadequate! Ha! No worries though, it's just motivation to tackle my much simpler home projects. TO BEC: Sorry to see you stuck inside on the edit, I'd much rather be out on that gorgeous piece of land too. But without you, none of us would have had a video to watch this morning so THANK YOU!

😲Eamon! While you guys did a GREAT job with everything, I *Highly* recommend talking to a carpenter friend about adding in 2 more 4x4 posts and another crossbeam instead of using the old shed as support for that entire other side. That shed is built to hold the weight of just the shed roof and snow load...now you added a TON of snow load and wind load onto the shed, without a steep angle to shed snow, and when snow falls in the masses it will collapse under the weight of the snow (trust me, I had a family member do just what you did, his vehicle and the shed were destroyed). Especially with those Canadian winters. You put in all that hard work, I don't want it being destroyed. Aside from that, amazing job on everything!! From the dryer vent to the metal and wood shed, awesome job!!! Bec doing a fantastic job as well!! Congrats on the new house. And anyone reading this who are carpenters weigh in on the two extra 4x4s.
@abunbun
@abunbun 4 жыл бұрын
Also, be SURE to tie down your Costco carport, it WILL blow away unless you attach all legs, and lastly when your Costco carport canvas cover is destroyed, get metal roofing and drill holes to screw it on, two of them side by side are better. We have gone through MANY before realizing this. Now ours have lasted decades.
@helenaveyard2061
@helenaveyard2061 4 жыл бұрын
I've had a wood stove similar to yours for years. I found the best way to keep it going is to get it started with a big flame for about 20mins then once it's settled, put a few big logs on and turn the vents/airflow right down. The fire should be just glowing rather than roaring. It'll still heat the house, but not waste wood. If you have a fire with a big flame all the time, you'll run through your wood too quickly. Great videos guys, I'm really enjoying everything!
@eamonandbec
@eamonandbec 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this super helpful tip Helen!! Much appreciated!
@emsalsa9385
@emsalsa9385 4 жыл бұрын
For sure! Hardwood is key for that glow. Also, for next year, look into buying entire tree trunks and cutting and splitting them on your own in the spring and then it has the summer to dry out. It's cheaper where I"m from to buy full tree trunks and maybe there too? Another thought: it's never a bad idea to create a fire line around your house by cutting back some too-close trees and bushes, and to store the wood a ways off, especially with fire season getting worse every year.
@peacefulreiki
@peacefulreiki 4 жыл бұрын
I would STRONGLY suggest to add some beams set at 45° degree angle to create some triangles between the roof and the pillars (both on the side and in the front) of the wood structure you built. Without these very resilient triangles, any building will just tilt as soon as some lateral forces will be applied. This is how you keep such a structure structurally sound despite wind gushing from the side or heavy snow accumulating on top. Look at any wooden building they have these for a reason :) (It's called "contreventement" in French)
@sketch2620
@sketch2620 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with this. Also, would insulate that wall near your wood-stove. You can't add any more inside, because it's required to be 18" from wall, but you can double the thickness of that wall outside your cabin. Throw on a 4'x8' panel of foam, cover it with a sheet of plywood, and beautify the bottom half with a few of those rocks that you demolished from yer wood-stove's previous location.

Great point. I feel like popular KZbinrs have an obligation to put quality information out into the world. It’s all well and good doing crap work in private, but promoting it is incredibly dangerous. I really hope they take a more sensible approach towards the rest of the cabin. That wood stove still makes me nervous too.

As someone who grew up in the 60’s using an outhouse at the family cabin in Northern Michigan, your lovely outhouse is missing one very important accessory...a spider stick! It hangs in there so you can swirl it around inside the hole before you sit down (in the case that you’ll actually need to use it!) so you don’t have any unexpected visitors in an unexpected place!

For locating holes like that I have a 3/16 x 6" bit. That way you can see where you are coming out on the other side with a little hole before making a big hole and adjust if need be. Of course you can still hit a pipe or wire if you're not careful. Glad it worked out

We had a home with an access road at the back. We had a “Quebec garage” in a spot we thought was sheltered. Our bedroom had a sliding glass door and when we were lying in bed we could see the garage. One morning while having having coffee in bed, we watched the wind gently lift that fabric garage up and over our 6’ back fence onto the road behind. It was hilarious. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. We had to buy a new one LOL!

I just want to say, I'm so happy you've bought this place in the Rideau Lakes. I've been going to my family's cottage there since I was a baby, except this year because of the border being closed, and it's hard to put into words how much I missed it. So when I saw you went to the Verona Foodland this week, I screamed out loud in recognition. Hope you're enjoying the area, whether it's Verona, Harrowsmith (the cheese factory moved down the road, but their curds yum) , Sydenham, or "road trips" to Westport or Kingston. It's a little slice of heaven, so thank you for letting me live vicariously through your adventures this year.

Nice Job, Bec! Hi, Bob!!! 1. Laughed my head off at 19:30 - 2/3 of the table was open with you all crowded at one end as if you were back in the van -- hahahaha! 2. On the Down side , be careful to keep wet snow off the carport tarp -- it rips. Also, after a couple years it wears -- and rips. On the plus side, when the canvas does rip, replace it with Polycarbonate Roof Panels because the metal frame will still be good. 3. An after-thought: that dump had a lot of wood, especially pallets - so possibly you could scavenge some of it if you don't really need pristine boards...maybe?

HEy Eamon and Bec, love you guys and love that your back in Canada. you made a comment about the amount of wood your going through. I grew up with a wood stove and remember how important it is to know your wood. Certain woods burn slower than others. Others burn faster and hotter (great for starting .Keeping wood dry was always an issue, we covered our outside wood with plastic sheeting and would stack wood inside to dry in our stairwell weekly so we regularly had dry wood, not damp wood to start our fire. I am sure you already know all this but in case ya didn't there's my Canadian input Love ya both! Glad your home and safe

After being a log cabin owner there was a lot of rot happening on our logs. It’s good to know you aren’t dealing with logs, just siding. Your vent looks great! Especially for DIY! Did you know they actually make a ventless washer/dryer combo? I have one for my small urban dwelling and I love it! Too late now....the vent hole is in! As far as exterior goes...Big Stretch caulking and paint stain will be your friend come spring!

Nice lean-to, love it. big fan of creating cheap & practical storage space. Consider adding some angled corner braces in the corners. 2x8's with lag bolts add tons of strength, so won't twist under snow weight. Peace!

Bec! You are the best! Thank you for leaving the footage of you testing the outdoor water tap!100% something I would have done! Also, I would burn 3-4 face cords of wood during the winter months (on the other side of the “pond”,Rochester, NY) as supplemental heating in house. I kept my house at 62df and used wood to heat further! Wood so nice, heats ya twice. But in reality after chopping, stacking, and then loading into the house and then burning it, it’s actually like 4 times! 🙌 I love seeing your progress! Home owning is hard and you two are killing it!

The best part is watching you install your dryer ... While I'm at the laundromat. I totally understand how amazing that must feel, congrats! Side note, I remember backing up trailers. An easy thing I did was, grip the bottom of the steering wheel, palms facing up, and point your thumbs. Now turn the wheel the direction you want the trailer to go, using your thumbs.

the trailer plug pulling out from vehicle has happened to me twice on the same trailer (second time after just replacing) found it was getting caught up and on full lock didnt have enough slack to vehicle and ripped from vehicle and dragged all the way home. :) do yourself a favor also - get yourself a good quality petrol saw, electric is great and i have a little 18v for tiny jobs but you need the power and chain speed of a petrol, wood cutting is now part of your life so get the right tools to make life easier - Kudos for wearing the chaps sawing in a prior video, with chainsawing with a petrol saw even hot weather i treat it like motorbike riding ATGAT (all the gear all the time). When using electric saw with 1/5th of the chain speed and smaller tasks i skip the chaps. loving this new era of watching the property progress.
