I bought a 2013 frs and I don't care about power. I like to hit corners fast and precise and this car definitely does that. Handles like a Porsche as they say. Had mine for nearly 3 years, has a front splitter, rear diffuser, side skirts, tein flex z coilovers, Megan racing tca's, stance lca's, valenti taillights, invidia n1 catback with a borla uel header and honestly I prefer handling and fun over power. If you want a car that breaks necks, handles great, and is affordable and has an abundance of aftermarket options then this is the car for you hands down. No one cares that's it's slow. Too many people miss the whole point of this car.

At first I was never really a big fan of the 86/BRZ/FRS, but as I watch more videos on them and have seen them in person, i am starting to understand the car more. I dismissed it initially because it had around 200 hp and 151 tq, which is a little ridiculous low, but you look at the weight, the minimalist approach inside, and the handling aspects, I understand it better now. I saw a TRD 86 at my dealership and the exhaust tips were massive and I actually really liked it. At $33k, seemed a little expensive, but then i priced up a fully loaded Corolla Hatchback XSE and that was like $28k, so $30k is kind of the going cost on cars.

So many complaints about the lack of power. I suspect that's because the torque is very low comparatively speaking. It has about the same horsepower as the Veloster and actually more than the Miata, but no one complains about lack of power in those cars. Not to this degree, anyway. The appeal of this car is the looks, the handling, and the overall driving feel. "Fast" is subjective.
@K03sport5 жыл бұрын
I really think the FA20 engine needs to have more displacement, 0.2L (read FA22) and incorporate the VVTL-i vs VVTL to enhance cam performance and give the engine better breathing characteristics despite it being a Subaru produced engine. These two things should help bump the torque up to a 160s number and improve the feel w/o sacrificing fe or livability. The Miata/MX-5 is also lighter than the 86/BRZ and the Veloster is turbo'd and makes more torque which delivers a different driving feel. My GTI 1.8t (down on HP [180], but up on TQ [174] to the BRZ) feels faster than the BRZ I tested and I believe that is because I have max TQ available at 1800rpm vs 4800rpm in the twins.

For that price, my money goes to 'the best selling 2-door sports car ever' Mazda MX-5 Miata. I test drove both cars and I was not impressed with 86/BRZ at all. Inside is too small for its looks, rear seats are useless, inside is too loud and most importantly it's super slow. After test driving Miata, it was a quick and easy decision. I went with Miata. It's more fun to drive, convertible top, quicker and great weight-to-power distribution. Plus, Mazda's steering is much more precise and throws are shorter too. Great video Dave! 👍

This car is proof you don't have to be the fastest to have a great driving experience. I recently tested an '18 BRZ Limited (last ones available) and was won over even though it isn't the fastest or most spacious. It communicated very well and was much easier to operate than expected. FYSA, You can't build a basic 86 at this time as the only trims on the website are the GT and TRD and the "low" mid 20s MSRP* shown is factoring in current rebates so the car (GT) starts in the 28s (29s after destination). Even though I like the exterior colors in 86 more, the red accents on the inside kill it and it will look like I'll buy mine at the Subaru dealer (BRZ Premium). So Dave, do you look at the G-meter while you are driving or do you wait until you've stopped. Surprised Toyota didn't offer the TRD trim in (Halo) White to give the consumer a choice in the top tier trim...you know, for balance.

So many ridiculous complaints about the hp rating and price. In the 90's we were lucky to get 150hp from cars in this category and price range and they were all front wheel drive. Not to mention the lack luster hard plastic and cloth interiors and it was a guarantee you were putting in an aftermarket head unit and speakers. Also there was nothing performance about them. You could easily take a BRZ/86 from the dealer and go straight to the track and have a decent time.

Pet it’s not even in the same league as an sti. Different handling, different performance, different weight class, yes Subaru powerplant but it’s closer to say a Miata or an s2000 or an rx 8.

32500$ is the price tag for the GT model in France (and add 10500 euros of "ecologic" taxe). ^^'

Subaru isn't known for rapid change and it isn't uncommon for them to let designs linger for 8 years or more (cough) WRX/WARX Sti (/cough). On a similar note, Nissan has done the same thing on their 370Z and dare I saw GT-R.

GT86 = AE86's spiritual successor. The beauty with sports cars like the GT86 is that you can use all of its power (that is more responsive than you think it is) all day long. Sure, there are other sports cars with more power, but are more expensive, heavier, and less fun-to-drive on public legal roads. (besides, 205 horsepower is impressive from an NA 2.0L I4 despite being horizontally opposed) For under the $30K range, barely any other sports car feels so visceral, drift-happy, and feeling like a true enthusiast's dream. In the end, more power will ruin this car in my book. Coming from someone who owns a GT86 with high quality track modifications done by myself. In other words, with responsive power even for every daily driving and public legal roads, visceral, lightweight and drift-happy feel, phenomenal balance, etc etc etc, the car was just built to be a true driver's car, like the AE86 that it inspires. To just have so much fun behind the wheel, which should be the main priority of any true sports car. Sometimes, power just isn't everything..
