That V6 S version looks and sounds AWESOME! Love those seats too, although I agree they could have tried a bit harder with the dashboard design and quality. But it sounds like they have spent the money where it matters, on the chassis and engines. I want one.

I really do love your reviews. So much detail, and it is so good when you pick up on details especially regarding quality which literally no other motor magazine picks up on, but they rather gloss over. There is more to quality than how soft the dashboard is. I would have picked up on things like the processing of the leather, the cheap feeling switches and so on, but I will say my dads XF was similar. Overall, they are beautifully made cars, they feels solid they are proving to be durable, they are made from quality wood, leather and nice headlining and carpets, certainly no worse than the Germans. It is mainly the switches and buttons they can improve upon and nip and tuck on the leather. I will say however that the Audi A4 and A5 have been criticised for the cheap plastic surrounding the instruments and centre console, and the plastic around the bottom of the seat which houses the electric seat buttons and with some customers they have actually cracked, but I think that has been sorted out with the facelifts, and the modern day Mercedes interiors I think feel very tacky and have slipped down compared to how they used to be built in the good old days. Overall though for absolute quality and attention to detail, Audi rock the charts and have done for years now. I love the look of this car. Looking Audi esk is no bad thing, but the design is so cleaver. Ian Callum says that power bulge in the bonnet serves not only to look pretty, but to add strength to the bonnet itself, provide better pedestrian protection against hard components in the engine and also helps with air circulation in the engine bay itself. So those curves and lines the car does have actually do things. That is proper design!

I live in Cary, North Carolina in the USA. After reading about the new Jaguar XE, I spent many hours at my local dealership asking tons of questions. It was a few months before they actually had a car one could drive. I kept asking what the gas Milage would be, especially for the Diesel. It took the dealership a few more months before they received their first diesel. I then ordered a diesel with AWD in Red. I have only put 2000 miles on the car so far, but it is a blast to drive. Still waiting to see what the MPG will be.

Had driven a few BMW`s and now have the XE S and this is true sports car. You have the feeling of being in a two seat racing kart and its sticks to the road and the steering is very direct. The sound of the V6 is amazing . I suggest you look at the S model in real life and have a proper test drive of this in Dynamic mode and I can assure you this car will blow you away especially when you feel the supercharge kicks in . BMW look so dated to me.

I sat in the back of the XE recently. I'm 170cm tall rather than 6ft but I can say with experience that the XE is far more comfortable than a BMW 3 series and I could travel for a few hours comfortably in the XE. The 3 series back seat is too upright, there is very little space for feet and crucially the back seat is shaped like a very wide bucket. This means when one sits behind the front seat, one slides down the curve of the seat towards the centre. One has to brace oneself against this and after 20 minutes it is very uncomfortable. It might work better if one sat in the centre of the seat but the drive tunnel makes this almost impossible. The XE is a compact sized car so I could not expect a cavernous rear compartment but for a person of my stature it was actually perfectly adequate and more importantly the ergonomics were perfect.

You are one of the TOP auto reviewers. Thorough and unbiased. My thoughts....from different reviewers including yours, the Jag XE now sets the new standard in driving pleasure for the class, period. BMW can't be happy. But you are right, why the substandard interior?? That is typical of the company....great mechanicals, beautiful exteriors, but poor quality interiors...the Range Rover Sport is not up to standard, the new Discovery Sport is not up to standard, and now the XE....GUYS, FIX THE INTERIORS AND YOU ARE TOPS!

An excellent review Thomas, just exactly what normal car buyers need. It's not about how a car drifts round a motor racing circuit with the back end hanging out, it's more about just the kind of things you talk about in your reviews, great detail and useful information. Great video review of a superb car, very thorough ;-) Personally I love the interior styling and the quality looks great to me, especially the XE-S model, only the rear seat release looked like it needed a different solution. Buying a car for how the buttons feel would be kind of weird to me. The Jag has something the others don't have, impeccable taste. BMW and Audi interiors look bland, and the Mercedes C-Class interior is a random mess of different ideas. Everything else about this Jaguar is superior to the usual suspects, will most definitely get one of these or the new model XF in a few years.

It is about time Dr Speth got his designers and quality control team around him and sorted out the interior shortcomings on the Jag brand.It is a great pity because they have achieved so much with regard to the driveability of of their cars,indeed many consider the XE to be the best driving vehicle in this particular sector,which happens to be the most fiercely contested by all three of the German brands.The switchgear and seats seem to be a recurring problem that should have been addressed long ago.No matter how good the suspension and body design is,it does not go down well if this is spoilt by detailed shortcomings.In God's name it doesn't take an Einstein to tell whoever has the ( no doubt lucrative ) contract to supply the seats to 'up their game' or lose it.

First of all thanks for the review and thanks for making it in English, it was easier for me to follow. I also like the review very in deph. I wasn't very interested in the petrol version as I'm just looking for a car to drive around and maybe makes some long cruises with low fuel consumption. From the technical data the diesel sound really interesting because it offers a lot of power while still being able to use as little fuel as your normal 100 HP or less efficient diesel engine. I do really like how the car looks, a bit British but also matching similar German car looks at the same time so that's interesting and I do like the authentic look enough to overlook the interior quality problems. I do find that a problem though because when you pay over 20 000 E for a car you do expect that quality feel to it, the stuff you don't get from your 10 000 E car. Finally regarding the rear of the 2 cars, the twin tailpipes look nice while 2 exhaust pipes combined such as the ones the diesel has don't really look good to me.

@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 9 жыл бұрын
Vasiliy Kulev Exactly, I agree thats the best solution price/performance, was also thinking that and mentioning it in our text on the website that is coming up for our German fans. Really looking forward to the fabric seats as well as its always very interesting to see the basic equipment
@vasiliykulev5880
@vasiliykulev5880 9 жыл бұрын
***** The equipment is pretty much enough in that trim, and with some extra stuff it is not going to cost more than 45 thousand euro, which is really great. But for me the main reason to look at the Prestige trim is that Latte-beige interior colour, which, for some reason, is not featured in the Portfolio version. And about the Pure version - you can still choose that Luxtec artificial leather seats, which is great for corporative clients, for example. And what about the interion flaws - well, they are everywhere, I remember mentioning it it your Range Rover review, after all, it's not such a tragedy that your armrest compartment opening knob feels a little bit wrong, is it? :) Now, my father drives a Honda Crosstour, and that's where it's appropriate to talk about not-so-well-made interior, but that's just another story ;) After all, this car is really great, and you've just proved - just as always! I've really been waiting for your review to come out before choosing whether to buy this car or not, but now I've made up my mind
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 9 жыл бұрын
Vasiliy Kulev Very interesting, thanks! Where did you get the info about the artificial leather seats? I didnt find any information on which version is faux and which is real. I suppose the Portfolio version has real leather which I, as you might know, refuse meanwhile. Faux leather option is great, however the climate features are better with alcantara/fabric seats. Yeah those interior flaws were mentioned because they want to fight against the German Premium manufacturers, so we also have to compare that. I also liked the car still. Nice to hear that you also prefer the bright interiors :) You gotta post us a picture on facebook when you've got your car!
@vasiliykulev5880
@vasiliykulev5880 9 жыл бұрын
Well, in the configurator on their website if your choose the Pure trim and then go to the interior settings, there are the seats options with both fabric and something called Luxtec. And it has to be some sort of artificial leather even judging by the name, I instantly thought of BMW with their Sensatec vinyl. Although I've just looked through the price list and this Luxtec thing is missing there, which is strange. And talking seriously about the competition with the German trio - well, it's tough, but the Jaguar are doing their best, obviosly. So far, I think, they've gotten way more further than, for example, the Japanese, or Volvo, or Caddilac (but I personally love the last ATS and CTS generations, and that CT6 is amazing) or even take the Maserati Ghibli! A magnificent car, indeed, but that's something you'd choose with your heart, not the mind ;) By the way, would be fun to hear your opinion on the Lexus IS or Infiniti Q50, if possible. And of course you'll get a photo firsthand ;)

Motor Trend Magazine's comparison found the XE to be a lot better in driving dynamics than the 335IS. And that was a statement, when the 335IS, driven alone, was amazing. That makes me think how amazing this XE is to drive. And if it's the case, I could easily forgive the slightly cheaper interior.

@mardamek 9 жыл бұрын
***** I know this from personal experience (although my car is not in the same league as the Jag or the 335IS). I have a 2004 SVT Focus (ST170), which is pretty cheap as far as interior materials (except for the seats, which are full leather Recaros and are one of the bests out there). The noise insulation leaves much to be desired. As a daily driver it's not to the level of the Golf GTI. However, it is at least a step above the Golf GTI (of that generation) in terms of driving dynamics, feel, sportiness, etc. So, would I rather have GTI-like interior, ergonomics and comfort? Sure. Would I sacrifice some of the driving feel for it? Absolutely not.

18:50 When I had a look a the interior of an XE on show it did feel a bit under par compared with BMW. There was more plastic, I think the door bins for instance and of course the binnacle. I wonder why they didn't integrate the binnacle with the dash as one solid piece then cover the whole item in leather/pleather? The guy demonstrating it said it was a preproduction version and the finish would improve for production. The hatch on the centre console cubby did feel like it could be stronger. But I recently tried a 3 series and I was surprised that the button was not really any better. There was no night and day difference at all. When opening the cubby in the 3 series it felt like there was slightly more resistance in the movement which can give the impression of something heavier and stronger but it was only a very slight and still underwhelming. It still felt like a plastic hatch on plastic hinges.

The Audi A4 is downright ugly and the BMW looks dated. So its between Jaguar XE and Merc C Class. Merc does not drive as well but has better interior. Jag drives the best of everybody on this class.

The subjective interior build quality is interesting but it's not really the point. Toyotas and Acuras have obviously cheap hard plastic interiors but the cars perform faultlessly. It seems to me that in every car reliability survey - apart from in Germany (big surprise) - Japanese built cars have less faults. Remember the old Lexus ad where the claim was that a 5 year old used Lexus was statistically more reliable than a new s class? Mercedes didn't dare challenge that in courts! European cars are an expensive questionable choice. Maybe you could report on international reliability surveys which might be a better indication of build quality rather than how buttons and hinges feel? Another good well made video.

gdwfs thanks! Good point with the reliability. Problem is that there are a lot of surveys and they all report other stuff - mostly depending on origin country :D

Hello, Thomas, I have been thinking what are the aspects that German people care about buying a car? quality, reliability? service? price? Would you please tell me what you think about it? or you can ask your pals, those info are very helpful to understand auto marketing. Thanks
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 9 жыл бұрын
Joyface D Hi! Good question. Imho there is a big difference to what people SAY they would care about and what they actually do. If you go with the surveys, the most important factors are: safety, quality, consumption, price. But if you ask me, how do people REALLY buy cars (and not pretend to), it is price and design.
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 9 жыл бұрын
Joyface D I feel that nowadays, its more about design and look and feel ... and actually you can understand it, because thats what people can experience on their own. You cannot judge by yourself how reliable a car is. And every reliability rating says something different ... but its indeed astonishing how so many US people go for the Japanese cars

***** I just don't think that many americans place so much immediate value on a vehicle and view it mainly as means to go from point A to B. Europeans place more value on brand name and the quality that this name carries. This being said Americans who have the money tend to buy German made cars as well Jaguars or Japanese cars such as Lexus. So I slightly disagree. I have an XF and prefer it over German cars other than mercedes.

To me it's either non-leather or nothing, I will not compromise in that area. So that means either cloth/fabric or leatherette. So when companies like jaguar force you to either buy the most basic model just to get cloth and can't even give you an option for a nice feeling leatherette (and look) it saddens me. So I was wondering if a premium brand like jaguar has some type of fake leather (such as Sensatec, MB-tex) offered on certain trims and models.

A left hand drive car on British reg. plates? Very unusual. Anyway, I think the XE is an all round good car, and Jaguar have dared to be different from the Germans. The exterior is beautiful, and considering that it's a Jag, the diesels are very efficient engines, but if it were me, I would never buy it. The fit and finish in the interior is absolutely shocking. Especially the big slabs of hard plastic on the doors, I mean when I saw that in a prototype, I thought it would be changed to something more premium for the sold car, but they somehow thought that they could get away with that, when a C-Class has whole slab of wood/aluminium in the same place? The other bad bits, like the instrument cover, and the seat-fold lever are also indications of general carelessness in the design. Still, I guess some people, who care more about outside appeal than inside quality, would love one of these. I'll stick with the Germans.

I don't see the XE troubling the sales of either the 3 series or Audi A4...... This current XE was designed 5 years ago and it certainly shows in the styling and tech!
@benweston9158
@benweston9158 9 жыл бұрын
+666DW Most cars are designed 3 - 5 years before they begin production, the same is true of the 3 Series and A4. Or any other car for that matter. In that respect, the XE is the newest of them all. Most reviews applaud the styling for being more modern and unique to the BMW or Audi. Taste is subjective, of course.

The rear looks too much like a face lifted version of an Audi A4... The front is okay but that back-end just ruins it for me. Like they ran out of inspiration halfway. Not too mention the quality issues. When you pressed the climate control buttons, the sound they made was really cheap. What a shame. I think this is more a competitor to a ford mondeo or Mazda 6 than a 3 series or c class.
