This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross small SUV versus the Kia Seltos small SUV. The new Toyota Corolla Cross has a 2L 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT, 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The Kia Seltos comes with a base 2L 4-cylinder with a CVT, 146 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. The second engine is a turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission with 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Both models have FWD and AWD options. The Corolla Cross is over 4 inches longer than the Seltos and offers more than an inch extra front legroom. The Seltos has 6 inches more second row legroom and offers a little more cargo space behind the second row, but the winner for overall cargo capacity goes to the Corolla Cross. There are three trims available on the Toyota, the base trim comes with a 7” touchscreen, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front seats, manual driver and passenger cloth seats.The next trim up gets an 8” touchscreen, heated steering wheel and blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. You can add the LE package for $2,100 CAD for the moonroof and wireless charger. The top trim has a 9-speaker JBL audio system, Softex power driver’s seat, wireless charger and a power rear lift-gate. The Seltos comes with similar standard features, heated cloth front seats, an 8” touchscreen and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. One up from the base model gets a heated steering wheel, sunroof and leatherette upholstery. The top trim is where you’ll find all the extras like power driver and passenger seats, the bigger 10.25” touchscreen, 7” instrument cluster, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and a wireless charger.

We’ve had a FWD Corolla Cross XLE with Premium Audio and the Convenience package for a few weeks now and are really liking it. Here in the southern part of the US we only get heated seats - no heated steering wheel. It seems Toyota is looking out for our Canadian friends and setting the options accordingly 😊

Great review. Funny, I bought a $44 thousand dollar (US) Toyota Venza limited. Had it for 6 months coming from a Kia product. The interior controls of the Corolla Cross looks SO much better and organized compared to the Venza. Toyota actually thought out the ergonomics on the Cross while totally forgetting about the Venza. I thought I’d get used to the “hodgepodge” ergonomics of the Venza but it’s not improving. It’s just a nightmare to find the controls you need. Glad to see Toyota step up on the interior of the Cross. This car looks like a winner. Cheers

Great review guys. Despite the unibrow I still prefer the Seltos’ design. You make a solid point with the reliability of the Toyota brand though. It is hard to ignore that it’s the more recognised brand. But if I got a better deal I think I’d go with the Kia. But it’s really close

I’d choose the Corolla Cross for its design and brand reputation but yes, the second row leg room is awful! Sat in one the other day at the dealership and as a 6’2” guy it was definitely a squeeze. The Seltos has a refreshing interior design especially with the updated screen in the 2022, but the 2021 model performed rather poorly in the NHTSA’s crash tests which is a dealbreaker for me. Given that Mazda was the best performer for small SUVs in the IIHS’s updated crash tests, I’m betting on the Corolla Cross since it’s being made in the new Toyota Mazda factory.
@tropicalstorm339
@tropicalstorm339 2 жыл бұрын
The Mazda CX-5 barely beat the Toyota Rav4 in that test and only because the rear passenger in the Rav4 missed the curtain airbag and hit its head on the window. The overall structure of the Rav4 actually fared a little better, a little less intrusion. Injury to the head of the rear passenger is what caused the Rav4 an acceptable grade instead of good. They should have tested multiple vehicles (at least 3) for each type of test to see if those occurences are consistently existent.

Corolla Cross seems to be a fine car, especially in the upcoming hybrid version, but then looking at the small difference in price to a RAV4 makes you wonder why not going for the class leader instead ... if only the rear quarter of the new RAV4 was not looking like after an accident ...

They perceived reliability of Toyotas hasn’t been exactly working out well lately since their heavy hitters like the Camry, Tundra, RAV4 & Sienna have been having as many problems- sometimes more than other brands with engines and transmissions. Old Toyotas were known to be solid but newer ones not so much. So many recalls for Toyota even while burning oil. They’re making their vehicles with cheaper materials so only thing holding them up is the brand name/loyalty. Same way Jeep and BMW aren’t known for reliability but enthusiasts keep the brands afloat. One for off-reading and the other sporty handling so when other vehicles make similar or better vehicles in the segments, most people are still blinded by the loyalty to older known brands. Ford Bronco is a great off reader but Jeep is the better known name in that segment.

I think the Kia/Hyundai duo will be the most impacted subcompact SUVs by the Corolla Cross in terms of sales; the appeal of paying just a bit extra and having a Toyota instead will be too hard to resist for many. The Subaru CrossTrek and the Mazda CX-30 would probably be less impacted since their brand appeal is more deep-rooted than that of the Koreans (the latter only in Canada since Mazda's sales are not that great to start with in the US anyway).

@@chezzyperson3339 The Venza's starting price is CAN $4500 more than the Sorento, that's only reason why the former hasn't outsold the latter (if that is indeed correct; I haven't checked). I love how progressive Kia, also its parent company Hyundai, do when it comes to technologies and engineering. But Seltos is too cheap for its own good. Corolla Cross's use of materials feel more classy in comparison. Even though Toyota's infotainment might not be as user friendly as Korean company's software. In this case, I would take the Corolla Cross XLE. It will be even better with Toyota's legendary hybrid system.

The Toyota is woefully underpowered with no option for a beefier engine. It also has a CVT transmission which has it's problems. OK, the Seltos also comes with a 1.6L turbo with 147kw and 295nm which is significantly more powerful than the Toyota. It also comes with an 8 speed automatic and AWD. It also comes with a power tailgate. Where I live it also comes with a 7 year unlimited km warranty. This car is hard to pass up so I bought one.

I’ll take the Kia, it’s more fun and from my experience and people I know that own Hyundai products, they’re reliable cars and as a bonus they drive better, look better and have more features than the equivalent Toyota. Plus being tall I have issues fitting in Toyota products, I don’t get as much leg room. I’m really not surprised that trolls are still making jokes about the fires that affected like 1% of cars yet everyone acted blind when Toyotas were accelerating by themselves, killed people and the company tried to cover it up by saying it was floor mats when it really wasn’t. People got over that in like 2 months but I guess Toyota fans are threatened by the Korean products

@@chezzyperson3339 the new ivts are good transmissions and between the souls and fortes, we don’t and no one we know, has any issues with them. They’ve updated the software for it at the dealers and acknowledged that some earlier ones did have issues. Toyota CVTs also have or had issues too as have any brand that uses a cvt. The kias have longer warranties and the their ivt is the best feeling cvt transmission IMO because It doesn’t feel like a cvt (nissans was the worst a few years ago). I don’t understand why you Toyota fanboys always have to bother people that like the other car, whether it’s a Kia or Hyundai or Mazda etc y’all always have to bring up something even though Toyotas have their own issues too 😂.
