I was depressed at 15 when this came out, close to ending it all. My dad had passed away, my mother was struggling financially, and I hated school and it’s awful bullies, I had my music, wrestling and the tv shows of the time to keep me lifted and this song in particular kept me going and while I flunked school, I went on to gain a on the ground and technical career in the military which I still serve today. Thank you REM for the music!

Which is not true. This idea is something close to the "American dream", but look what it has become: Many kids and adults have lived in shit for years and will live in shit, while some few "stars" build high walls around their property, collect more and more money and shares, buy lot's of guns to defend it or buy people to do this job until the planet is completely ruined from inside and outside poison. This dream has become a nightmare and it might be better to wake up and fix some things, before we can dream again. People need dreams and we outside need America, but not in this shape.

I don't know what it had, but I feel like 2001 was the break between two eras. I was 13 at the time, and I had a blast that year, it was actually the best year I ever had, even tho I didn't achieved any dream or goals, I used to enjoy everything, from the morning sun to the music playing on the radio, this track gives me so many good memories of that year. The next year I lost my grandmother (who was one of my favourite persons) and my father because of a devastating leukaemia (first signs in October, he passed in December). Then the cellphone technologic era, which I still can't get used to. I miss those times. I wish I live forever in 2001.

Stormylicious Princeso I can relate to what you are saying and feeling and I am now in my early 50’s. 2001 marked the end of innocence for the world as we knew it in The U.S.. I enjoyed air travel pre 9/11. I had a similar experience to yours. I loved the 80’s and wish I could relive them. In 92 I lost my mom to Cancer, 94 my grandfather to heart disease and 97 my father to a heart attack. Those events derailed my life. I realized the only thing you can’t make more of is time and you can never get back the past and memories fade with age. All we have is each other and the time we have now and it is up to us to make the most of it and surround ourselves with good people and the ones we love. Keep your chin held high and keep moving forward.
@inspectorlunge38874 жыл бұрын
@lakewood85 Actually, research has shown that a lot of memories (possibly all of them) are still inside our heads. They just have few neural pathways connecting to them, so it's hard to remember these memories most of the time.
@florianmeier31864 жыл бұрын
@@ttv_mister_vic467 I think he or she knows well. The government sended its own kids to war and mass murder based on lies: 9/11 had nothing to do with Iraq or Lybia and there were no weapons of mass destruction. To justify it, you have to invent a gradient in the worth of the people, you need to establish an atmosphere of fear and good and evil, where killing and torturing is acceptable and a strong gradient of power, where one follows the orders and the other gives orders to kill. It might not be fascism, but something not completely different. But these people were not born on 9/11. There was no innocence before, otherwise this would never have happened. And there were not only bad times after. Here in Europe, it was clearly a big issue, too, but nothing completely exceptionel. We had terror attacs before and after and better, but also much worse times.
