I have to say I prefer All Tomorrows in the fact that despite being transformed in unimaginable ways the future humans in all tomorrows are humanized in ways man after man never does, despite them technically looking more human. They watch tv, they enjoy books and music and enjoy life in all the ways we do. They are far more human then the beasts in man after man ever could be.

One of the most important things the artwork in All Tomorrows conveys is just how human that these genetically modified things look. There is a sharp contrast between the genetic meddling that the Qu performed and the natural evolution that followed. Look at the swimmers vs the tool breeders. Swimmers have very human eyes, noses, and even have remnants of feet, fingers, toes, and knees. Whereas the tool breeders look decidedly more dolphin and their noses have been replaced with a blowhole. The artist did a fantastic job.

My problem with Man after Man is that most of the species presented there are very animalistic, being almost non-human in nearly every way except for a few minor similarities (mainly the uncanny faces). They resemble apes more than humans which is the problem… they aren’t Man. Humans create art, have cultures, make and build things, and have languages. Only a few post-humans, like the Hi-Tek and Tik (and a few others I haven’t mentioned), are shown to have art and presumably at least some these things, but nearly every other creature does not. They aren’t humans by our definition, they are just animals. They don’t ever regain there sentience or humanity back like the future humans (except the lizard herders and mantelopes, both lost there intelligence) in All Tomorrows and remain animals for the rest of the book.
@toprak34793 жыл бұрын

Not that I think ''Short good, long bad'' but Man after Man can get a little tiring to read, especially since the introduction is already rather long winded, and covers info that most people that are into speculative evolution would already know.

Apparently, what would eventually become Man After Man started off as two completely different projects. On one hand, Dougal Dixon approached his previous books publisher's pursuing a sequel of After Man where humanity made it back to earth 50 Million Years hence, interacting with the After Man's fauna and eventually leading to the extinction of many of them. On the other hand, Wayne Barlowe, who you may know as the artist and author behind Expedition's, Guide to Extraterrestrials, Barlowe's Inferno and creature designer in the og Pacific Rim, started working in the 80's in a project called "Future Man", which, as its title suggests, was dedicated to future speculative human evolution since the start and whose artwork and concept was "apparently" presented to the very same publisher. Hijinks ensued and Barlowe's project fell through, which resulted in the publisher "suggesting" to Dougal Dixon to change his original vision for MAM and insted dragged him into the "Future Man" project, retooling Man After Man as a book about posthumans against his own whishes, although he still went through to secure his paycheck. I suspect that the overall pessimistic and nihilistic outlook of Dougal Dixon may had been more due to him having to work in a different project to what he envisioned and kind off half-assing it, he even refered to it as a "disaster project" in a recent interview with Darren Naish. As for Barlowe he seemed to be pretty resentful about the whole incident, in his book The Art of Wayne Barlowe he captioned some sketches for the Future Man project as follows: "These sketches are from a book I proposed in 1984, about the future evolution of mankind. Unfortunately, it's a book that will never be created, since the sketches were plagiarized and used by another author". Given that the Dougal Dixon was basically dragged into the reworked MAM, I doubt he is to blame and found more likely that the publisher or artists behind Dixon's trilogy where the ones who decided to plagiarize the concept art, but regardless it was a pretty big mess and I'm dissappointed that we never got to see the original concepts realised.

It's somewhat ironic that Man After Man feels too mechanical and unfeeling even when considering that the book is an anthropology study written by highly advanced humans whilst All Tomorrows, written by an alien simply known as Author, is so human. I love how there has been this incredible explosion of life and interest in A.T. because for as scientifically out there it is, it invokes the Human Condition no matter how different or distant our species is. Whilst I started with the infamous "Season's Greetings" meme I have ended with tears in my eyes as Author holds aloft an ancient human skull and demands we seize All Tomorrows and make our world as kind as we may; just as those descendants of apes did billions of years ago.
@imstupid8803 жыл бұрын
I actually feel the complete opposite in the "overall outlook" section. All Tomorrows has a detached tone to it, as it's from the perspective of an author of a different species stumbling across a long-dead species, pondering what they could've achieved and then deciding against going into more detail. It feels extremely anticlimactic. Man After Man, however, ends on a hopeful note: despite the Earth's environment being destroyed again, and most all life being wiped out, there's still a aquatic species surviving at the depths of the ocean, perhaps to surface one day again. That being said, overall I do prefer All Tomorrows to Man After Man. As you say it feels more science fiction, as it takes a very specific scenario arrived at arbitrarily and then follows the journey of what happens after. In a way it almost feels more grounded because if that, due to suspension of disbelief. Man After Man, however, takes itself entirely seriously and then fills itself with ridiculous claims and leaps of logic that make it really hard to take seriously.
@ThoughtPotato3 жыл бұрын
You made some very good points here. Especially in how seriously MAM takes itself--the tone almost clashes with the artwork, which is _very_ hard to take seriously. But then, given the issues the author had with publication, I suppose that makes sense
@imstupid8803 жыл бұрын
@@ThoughtPotato I personally find the art style of MAM to be reminescent of the budget paleoart you'd find in school textbooks, which would occasionally be pretty derpy. As you pointed out, the colors and posing make them feel like sketches of still life. I think it was just unfortunate that the actual designs themselves look rather silly, and perspectives are sometimes off, which is what leads to the sense it's not very serious. I will say that the art isn't as clean as it is in After Man, though.

But All Tomorrows seems to me like it meant to be a history book written so long after the fact a lot is left to speculation. Both are super interesting but Man After Man seemed to go with a more scientific approach and All Tomorrows went with a historical analysis approach.

All Tommorrows is also explicitly anti-fascist, as told by C.M. Koseman in a comment under a video documentary on the book. Which honestly, is something we really need rn in the "western" world. Like, damn, I was thinking that the maker of the video was stretching it at first glance but after re-reading the book with the outlook, I certainly can see what Koseman was getting at.
@skitstheskitty27873 жыл бұрын
Gonna contrast this with Man After Man's Hitek, which explicitly says in the text that "due to people with deformities and other disabled people not dying out, the hitek are reliant on their mechanical vessels to survive". this also might include inbreeding, but i find it kinda tasteless to compare the fucked up power structures of incest and bigotry that often comes with it to disabled people existing. not only is this an incredibly reductive take in genetics, as just because abnormal genes aren't getting weeded out, that doesn't mean they'll fucking dominate the genetic pool. 300 years is also far too soon for this to happen as well. this creative decision in the hitek frankly reads as ableist to me and can easily be interpreted in support of eugenics

When I got into all tomorrows I always thought the book was just like a rewritten diary of paleontology log of the (alien)author since the actual pictures in the book look almost like it was taken by a camera and I think who took the photo were the gravitals right before ending the species or the advanced evolved post humans and then when the human species were extinct the author wanted to find out what wiped out the human race so he went to some of the planets of the post humans and even the martians and the author found some remains of pictures and some of the evolved martians and evolved post humans so, they just took a guess from what the non evolved post humans(like the striders or temptors)from their location and anatomy that they've found and the authors sort of tried to copy the pictures or try to redraw them and try to draw the non evolved post humans depending on what they think the qu would've done and the remains then when the author died(I don't know if the author is immortal or not I'll say they are not)some of the alien species or the species of the author were probably fascinated by the authors work so they tried to rewrite his(I don't know the authors gender so I'll call them a he) his logs and diaries also some of the pictures in all tomorrows (like the titans) looked something like broken of glass or like ripped and dirty paper and I'm sorry I didn't talk about man after man I just think all tomorrows is more theorizable about and more interesting

@entothechesnautknight17623 жыл бұрын
While I do appreciate the ground work man after man laid, all tomarrows is just better in every way, pretty much. Others have brought up the humanity found in the humans, or the actually believable evolution many go through, so I'll instead mention how the Qu solve MAM's biggest issue; the "why". In MAM, the excuse that they used humans because they had nothing else was... Weak, at best, and the way the old humans came back and bleakly wiped out everything was also kinda just hard to really get into the reasoning of. In All tomorrows, however, humanity only majorly genetically modified themselves once, sent them out the stars, and prospered for generations (at the expense of the local ecosystems, but still). And then the Qu, an alien religious cult with a billion year head start in technology, bent on genetically modifying everything and being the only ones "allowed" to do it, show up, and take offence to humanity's gene editing. Partially as punishment and partially as religious worship, they then turn humanity into their new "pet project". This solves the "Why" question so easily, while keeping the reader engaged; a mad alien cult making abominations for religious and scientific purposes is way more believable then humans breeding anthropomorphic giant AC units, and ironically, the Qu we're more humanized as well. Between their religious fervor, their love of the arts, the need to have pets, and the wrath they inflicted upon the colonials for daring to be more then a speed bump, the Qu showed a lot of very human emotions and reactions, that the "old humans" in MAM just lacked, making them very compelling Villians and characters in comparison. I will always appreciate Man after Man for it's legacy and impact (HAPPY HOLIDAYS), but there's a reason speculative bio-engineering only took off when a large enough creator finally shown a light on All tomarrows. TL;Dr Man after Man walked so All Tomarrows could run.

Aight, time to be contrarian: I prefer Man after man (and the related book by the same author, "after man") because they read like a genuine look into the future of human evolution. The Qu from all tomorrow turn me off as it means most of the creatures we see in book evolved naturally within context, which feels like a lazy excuse for body horror, where as After man and Man After man take A genuine look at future Evolution and try to predict what our descendants *could* look like.
@blackthornbark3 жыл бұрын
exactly my thoughts! i am kinda annoyed at all tomorrows from the perspective of a biologist, but i must excuse it all because "they're designed by some space bug, not really evolved", while man after man is just... interesting. and i love the style likw from the vintage animal illustrated books
@lordgrunwalder16073 жыл бұрын
Thats the storry of the book… but you know also some humans in man after man is genetically engineered. Right? Actualy most of them. While all tomorrows show how species evolved after qu.
@QuartzRoolz3 жыл бұрын
@@lordgrunwalder1607 you see that's the problem: all tomorrow's is a story. I should be clear, after man is way stronger than man after man, but the main point is that its a genuine look at future evolution rather than a story. It's speculative science, not a sci-fi novel.
@brutusthebear90503 жыл бұрын
I disagree. With All Tomorrows, I'm able to suspend my disbelief far more than Man after Man. Man after Man has way more of a scientific undertone, which harms it as the species are far too specialized to be realistic, especially considering that these are the descendants of humans. It's just not realistic as far as speculative biology goes. In All Tomorrows, the Speculative Biology is for these grotesque monster creatures. And over time they become more human, not less human. This is far more realistic, especially in terms of millions of years.

Most people seem to be of the opinion they prefer All tomorrow. But the cheapest copy of man after man I could find ran for 300 plus dollars on Amazon, so it would really surprise me if people had actually read it. Yes the dates are implausible, but the stories are amazing, and without this specific work, I don't think Kosemen would ever have written All Tomorrows, some of the similarities are undeniable. Kosemen's work was designed for an online world with no physical copies ever being printed, however, Dixon's book is a surreal take on encyclopedias of the 90's and before, and in my opinion cannot be judged without having read a physical copy. Yes, Dixon believed the book to be a mess, but, many of the concepts are amazing, and laid the foundations for more or less all future posthuman works

Soooo my reasoning at the time was that they were too different to compare. While the Builders and Qu do fall into the same "genetic manipulator" category, one acted as the catalyst for all the future evolutions (All Tomorrows), while the other just modified them as tools (Man After Man). In retrospect, though, that "genetic manipulator" category was probably enough to go on. Dang it.
