Followup is heavier: Son asks his father, "Who are you?" He answers "That's a good question" completely ignoring the plane flying overhead. So many layers in that scene.

I'm sure its been mentioned, but the airliner heard flying overhead at the end of the scene is quite significant. Throughout the film there are several instances when he hears a plane flying overhead and looks up at it. In that final scene, its as though he finally realises he is no longer a pilot and hence doesn't look up.

No! He was always be a pilot in his heart. Nobody, not even the FAA can ever take that away. Alcohol took his wings but it didn't take his commitment to become a pilot. Pilots are held to the highest standards of any profession. Nobody, including brain surgeons can light a fucking candle to a military pilot turned commercial pilot. A pilot whom seeks help from the disease of alcoholism will find his life forever under a microscope. They are constantly psychologically evaluated and also have to pass rigorous cognitive exams if they ever want to return to cockpit. No profession has standards that come anywhere close to that.

It taught me something, to watch how much I drink and not let it take over my Mind & Body, otherwise I'll end up an Alcoholic !!!

Iirc, the NTSB actually tried to help him out. They realized that he was under the influence when he got his tests thrown out, but since that actually ended up being the reason why he was able to save all those people, they gave him the chance to use his dead colleague as a scapegoat. But his morals were too strong and he refused to dishonor her memory for his own benefit.

I feel like it's a major misconception that Denzel's character is supposed to be moral throughout the film. he's not a good person but an exceptional pilot, at the jury it wasn't about him standing on the morals hed always had, it was him realizing this was it, this was his last chance to not be a bad person and he took it. it's less a "I'm too moral to lie about my colleague" and more him just shattering at the thought of one more lie and from the broken pieces building himself into an honorable man. when people act like he was always moral it kinda takes away from his growth, because he was not moral but learned to be, and the first step in learning to be moral is to stop being immoral

Forgive me for saying this ... My dad was a borderline alcoholic; my best friend has end-stage renal disease because he is an alcoholic; and a few years ago, I lost a dear friend, and mentor, to alcoholism... Being an addict is a disease ... a disease few understand, which can be devistating both for the addict, and those around them ... But, like many diseases, it is possible to get well; you will remain an alcoholic for the rest of your life, but every day sober is a small victory ... As my friend that passed away said, "all addictions boil down to this: pain management ...", and I believe him ... just wish he followed his own advice ... otherwise I would have attended his funeral ... In short this; admitting you have a problem is a big step; understanding the pain that drives it is quite another ... I have seen it in real life ... it is doable ... To those whom are alcoholics, get help. The road to recovery is long, and difficult, but not impassable... I sincerely wish you all good health, & a long, and sober, life ... Be well.

@jackbartlett82719 жыл бұрын
+bryce251 Here in Australia (in the suburb I live in) a teenage girl was hit by a drunk, un-licensed and under-aged driver who was hooning in his mates car. The girl suffered a huge leg injury and it had to be amputated and she has to live with that for the rest of her life now. The driver of the car was actually, at the time, being hunted down by the police for a court sentence that he had previously avoided. He had un-provokingly attacked a teenager on a train a few months earlier. His punishment for bashing an innocent kid on public transport, driving under-aged, drunk and without a licence and causing grievous bodily harm because of it? $150 and just over a years imprisonment with parole. And there are people out there that are being put in prison for 20 years because they did a bit of tax-dodging. The law system in the world is an absolute joke. But a pilot that flies drunk is a very serious offence, even if he did save the lives of most of the people on board.
@bryce2519 жыл бұрын
+Jack Bartlett Which is why he should have just lost his job and maybe a fine. Regardless of his state if he was not on that plane every one would have died. Taking that into consideration he shouldnt have been piloting while under the influence AT ALL, but he was the sole reason people survived.
@The_G_899 жыл бұрын
Going to Jail was the best thing to happen to him. Being in Jail has helped him overcome his addiction of alcohol and that will continue to grow and help him out. Who knows, he could also get parole for good behavior.
@TryHardXbox19 жыл бұрын
+bryce251 So many people could have died because of him, you don't understand that. He saved the people but the outcome if he was even more drunk and killed many people, he would have been put in jail for a VERY long time.

Right, but he did something extraordinary which resulted in saving lives. Just like it is illegal to kill someone else, police or soldiers do it every time to save others. I would have agreed on removing its pilot license for breaking the rules, but sending him to jail was a bit too much.
@Daemon1995_4 жыл бұрын
it was about laws
@red_freire4 жыл бұрын
He did something extraordinary by chance, flying is dangerous so we do everything possible so we can avoid ANY problems, being sober improves greatly how you perform. We don't punish people by the results, we punish by the conscious mistakes they made. Say I throw a paper in to the trash and that activates a bomb and kill thousands, I'm guilt only of my conscious intent, wich was throwing the paper out, not the killing. Same way the pilot here is guilt of being drunk and incapacitated while responsible for hundreds of lives, not of landing the plane.
@Intothefirenow3 жыл бұрын
Imo this would be pardon territory. It was the machine's fault and he was the only pilot capable of saving all of lives during that major malfunction. I'm sure there would be a movement to pardon him.
@20the203 жыл бұрын
@@red_freire that would mean that it was dumb luck that he landed the plane the way he did, which I dont think is totally fair. You could make the argument that since he was such a deeply dependent alcoholic, if he was sober he might have had a more adverse reaction and not been able to keep his cool the way his copilot (who ended up dead) did. And people have gotten pardoned for making incredible things happen under normally punishable circumstances before.

The airplane overhead during this scene is incredibly powerful and it’s taken 5 maybe 6 views to even realise this. So powerful! And the question “so who are you?” We should all try answering that without starting by saying “My name is………..” and see how we get on. Most can’t even get past that………defining who you are without using your name is key in that scene. It may also be key in life.

It would be more like your tire blows up and you manage to control the car. But that is a different topic because the driver under the law has to be aware of the condition of its own vehicle. A pilot does not own the airplane therefore he is ignorant of the whole condition of the machine.

Not an accurate comment. Commercial pilots perform detailed inspections both inside and outside the aircraft prior to each flight. To say a pilot is ‘ignorant of the whole condition of the machine’ is flat out wrong
@artvandalay21202 жыл бұрын
@@algorhythmic3904 commercial pilots do not perform inspection of the "inside" of planes only the cockpits and passenger areas. Only a maintenance personnel can inspect the mechanical areas inside the plane. The area that took damage in particular was located in the stab of the plane, and there's no way to inspect it during a per launch.

Wow.....such a hopeful ending. Both for the son and for the father. Second chance. New life.

I'll like to believe that flight & cast away take place in the same cinematic universe... The parallel between this ending & cast away, both protagonists are at the end of one journey & ready to begin another, one of healing & acceptance of the uncertain future

For anyone who didn't get it, Whip is more free, I mean truly FREE and happy and full of life during these prison scenes than he was the entire film before it. Whip made it. God let him save the plane, then let him save himself.

i was an alcoholic from 2012 to 2013. dont blame us, we have demons. some of us overcome it, some of us do not. bless
@sweetkiss1196 жыл бұрын
Michael M don’t blame us? As adults you are responsible for your own actions. You make the choice to drink or do the drugs. So sick of addicts refusing to take responsibility for there actions. But why would you even it’s so much easier to blame other people. Pathetic
@MrFlyboy13136 жыл бұрын
Michael M you’re still an alcoholic,sir it never goes away. I hope you have been sober and regained control of your life. The fight to stay sober is a lifetime battle. Stay strong!

Denzel Washington defined the word Perfection through his acting and being the character. His own personality never becomes part of the role. who else can do it?

Daniel Day-Lewis deserved an Oscar for Lincoln. But Washington deserved one for this role too. Such a pity they both had to be out at the same time.

This movie is magnificent but it's heavily wrong on the pilot, the pilot wasn't drunk and in fact did everything possible to make sure the plane went down safely as according to the black box found in the wreckage, the character Whip was made solely for the movie and it was the best decision the writers ever made

This is the first time I"ve seen this scene...I'm 43 years old. And I decided to go back to college to get an Engineering Degree so I can be a NASA Spacecraft Engineer. Even though I did live with my father for 15 years...he wasn't interested in me. We never talked or socialized...and he was fascinating and sometimes scary but I honestly never knew him. This scene is me at 21. This is me now.
