Desperation doesn't excuse an unprovoked attack. If they didn't bother to ask a friendly species for before attacking them then they never going to accept charity.

Indeed a race that hungry and desperate has taken an evolutionary step backwards by abandoning rational thought. They sought out an immediate solution to or a quick fix for a long term problem. Humanity and Earth to the Sulseeshi could have been a boon if they had been calm and rational. Now maybe it was more akin to a drowning man pulling his would be rescuer down with him in a blind panic, but be it born of malice or panic is semantics when a contact turns hostile without provocation.
@yisus46817 ай бұрын
I 100% agree But then again, if humanity sees an alien ship coming towards earth in the middle of world war 3 we would act the same, that’s just how dumb mob mentality is.
@DeathclawJedi7 ай бұрын
@@yisus4681 very true and well said Mob mentality is a factor.
@Wise4HarvestTime7 ай бұрын
Agree with original comment. answering sub comments: even if someone is coming to you seemingly to attack or enslave, you would ask for terms and try to communicate. It may be this species doesn't understand friendly interaction at all and that is the only reason they wouldn't communicate in the beginning. If they had to ability to cooperate enough to get off their planet, they should have an ability to cooperate with aliens and communicate before starting a war. But a poverty mentality, and dog eat dog view of the universe might be what sealed their fate...
@frostbite07077 ай бұрын
@@yisus4681 True, but the difference in this story's scenario, is that they had actually been communicating for a while before they attack without warning.

How is their desperation a justification for killing people who extended an olive branch. If anything it shows how dangerous they are to humans as a species. Do you think they would just ask to colonise one fo the planets after attacking the first contact crew.

Fair point, and that is why I called this story illogical, focused only on modern and ecological propaganda and not quality of it story or already mentioned logic.

Humans were attacked after first contact. Unprovoked. The enemy made no attempt to ask for help. The hand wringing, self flagelation is, at the least, misplaced.

If only authors knew the distinctions between Sapience and Sentience.

For any who don't: a bacterium is alive. A dog is alive and sentient. A human is alive and sentient and sapient.
@SmokePoppa7 ай бұрын
@@joelceda3500 If only that was an explanation... A dog is both Sentient and Sapient. Case and point, roll up a newspaper and whack a dog a few times and see how it reacts when you raise the newspaper tomorrow. That's cognitive thinking, learning from an experience and predicting a potential outcome. 100% of all mammals are both, but that's not the point. All creatures that are both sentient and sapient have a knowledgebase built one a single concept of fight or flight's root basis. A guy sees a pretty girl, it's a positive feeling. Sees an ugly girl and it's a negative. From that root association buried deep, below our subconscious thought process is the basis for all knowledge, opinions, ideas, etc. that humanity has ever had. It builds pathways that we don't even recognize are associated but it's always a positive or negative. Hot burns and causes pain evolves into don't touch fire or test the coffee before drinking. Sentience is the emotional positive or negatives. Sapient is the cognitive positive or negatives. Hitting something hurts, falling is hitting something. Being up high and falling will really hurt, so I don't want to fall.

While a total annihilation of the Proxima aliens was overboard, beating them down for what they did wouldn't have been. Humanity coulda reduced their space faring abilities to nill. Idc how desperate the aliens are. The mindset of "we should've just tried to understand" when they were clearly actively seeking to take our homeworld, through violence, from us is just naive. Did humanity go overboard? Yes. Did the proxima aliens bring it on themselves? Also yes.

I liked this one, too. One theme I'm hearing in these stories is that all life is precious, and those that have been given "life" should, as much as in them is, make every effort to live peaceably with each other and preserve and protect the gift.

I don't know what species this author was trying to write about but it sure as hell wasn't the humans. Back when I was in the army going through bt and ait one of the most fundamental things they taught us was the military as a whole was there to secure peace but we were always to be prepared for war. To send carriers and frigates, those are vessels of war that in all rights should be full of fighters and pilots not explorers. And to make it sound like humans are so weak and narrow minded, like we wouldn't learn about the potential for conflict and only study a language and culture is just ignorant and goes against humanities core instincts. Every human, whether they'll admit it or not, we always size each other up when we first meet each other, it's instinctual.
