I spent the day with local fisherman and wildlife expert, Payton Moore. You won't believe what we caught right near downtown Houston.

For thanksgiving break me and my family drove down to Bolivar Peninsula and on our way back home we had to stop in Houston. I saw these bayous and decided to get my fishing gear out. First catch, I caught the same exact “alien fish” in the beginning of the video. Houston is just wonderful. ❤

3:34 that fish is known as a common pleco (plec), and are indeed invasive armored catfish. They are frequently bought at pet stores to clean tanks of algae and other grime, but they can get over 12 inches, so people release them into the water, where it will destroy all plant matter

I used to live off a channel of Granbury lake and we had gar there. I'm not experienced at fishing at all, but when I got off work in the morning I would go out there and fish for gar, just because they were so fun to try and catch. I caught a few but of course I was never able to reel them in. I'm sure I didn't have strong enough fishing line, and of course not enough experience. But I would get them close enough to maybe get them with a net, so I bought one of those, and I swear as long as I had that net by me I wouldn't catch a thing, as if they knew. Then one day I caught a catfish, which I was able to easily reel in. But being inexperienced and a bit stupid it didn't occur to me that there wouldn't be enough oxygen in a small container of water. I put it in a small Styrofoam cooler until my husband came home because I didn't know how to clean fish, but the next time I checked on it it was dead.

Some of this video is taken from along Brays Bayou underneath SH 288, but he's pulling the gar out from a spot on south side of Brays Bayou, opposite the intersection of North MacGregor and Rockwood, near the University of Houston. I used to catch catfish from that general spot when I was a kid growing up in University Oaks.

I've caught these plenty below lake Sinclair in middle GA where it runs all the way to the ocean. We'd use a large cork. They'd drag it up and down the river like you said getting the bait to their mouth. Once it stopped and the cork began bobbing up and down they were chewing on it and you could finally set the hook. We rarely didn't hook up but it may take several minutes. The best was getting kids on one of these. They're scared of getting pulled in because the fish are usually bigger than the kid. Gets boys and girls alike wanting to fish all the time.

Yeah I caught those fish before because it's just a gar which is a fish that is really tough with armor and they are commonly bowfish for both fisherman and you can literally just head down to my Creek and catch a bunch of them but they're nearly as big as catfish getting up to 200 lb but they're even bigger catfish in my Creek one time I had to Wrangle a gar in a little water hole and it only weighed about 10 pounds but we've caught 62 nearly 70 80 lb catfish down in my Creek
