“Why didn’t we do this in Florida” Here’s some reasons not to from a Floridian: 1. It rains all the time 2. It’s always hot 3. The lowest humidity on record since 1852 is 87% 4. You’ll most likely be shot or arrested by 6 hours in 5. Cute little alligators 6. Literally no sidewalks 7. Trucks bigger than Parliament 8. Hot 9. Humid 10. A new hurricane every week

As a postie who walks 12 miles a day the key to keeping your feet from killing you are insoles. Not shoes or socks but insoles. Proper walking/hiking insoles. they will save you so much pain. My current faves are Sorbothane Cush N Step. Can be had for less than £12! But awesome effort here guys, that has taken some guts.

There are now organized 100 km walks with a set route and a time limit of 24 hours. I think it helps and motivates enormously if you have a planned route - ideally with some defined exit points where you might catch a bus or hitch a ride every couple of hours. I just though which route I might try in the UK if I wanted to see how much I could manage in 24 hours, so I had my hiking app calculate a route from central Oxford to central London. It has the advantage of going slightly downhill much of the route and following the Grand Union Canal, which looks like the long and pretty undisturbed stretch of path you'd need. Plus, if you run out of energy or your blisters overcome you during the last hours, you're in London and not somewhere out in the sticks.

That's wildly impressive to me. I've done a fair portion of hiking as I've been in the boy scouts through my youth. To earn the hiking merit badge, we had to hike 20 or more miles in one day and basically everyone who went developed a new issue that they'd never had before. For me, my knees have never been the same since then. Over longer spans of time, I've done around 80 miles worth of backpacking over the span of 14 days in the back country but that has included being loaded down with about a 50 lbs. backpack and when we'd get to camp, we would do camp activities beyond what the day had already beaten us with. By age 21 I had over 400 documented miles of hiking strictly within the boy scouts. I've said to old men who say I shouldn't ache in the ways that they do that having mountain climbing as a hobby is a really really really tough thing on your body.
