Idk, this seems to be an east coast thing or resort by resort. Where I live and ski (Colorado, PNW, Utah), the ski patrol is super chill and although we get a shit ton of snow, so no reason for trails to be closed, they generally don't put up closed signs even when conditions are iffy, just warnings. Unless the lift is straight up closed, and you'd get stranded. Never had a patrol power trip on me either or be anything more than a medic or information provider. Europe is nice, I've skied in Austria and Switzerland, but we get more and better snow here :)

I was at Whitetail the same day; it was so crowded that it became dangerous. The ski patrol guy is also full of it - I grew up skiing on the West Coast and they would NEVER waste the cops’ time over someone skiing on a closed trail (the nearest cops would be over an hour away at most west coast resorts). At most, they’ll pull your ticket for the day for skiing out of bounds, or maybe your season’s pass for three infractions. My brother has gotten into some trouble in the past for that sort of thing. Not encouraging going on closed runs by any means, but I’m not sure why the ski patrol didn’t just ask for your parents’ contact info when he realized it was a group of kids.

For those curious about this mountain. The black diamond area typically keeps away riff raff that fall a lot or dont know what they're doing because you have ti enter through a rather steep but short trail. The lift typically moves at a good pace as it only services people that have made it down a black diamond in the first place. Its been quite a few years but there's usually one trail left with heavy moguls for the majority of the trail. The black diamonds here arent very challenging aside from the moguls at least imo. It faces the wrong way into the sun all day and create some really nasty ice, this was indeed excellent snow for the whitetail and the east coast in general. Love whitetail when the snow is great. The main sections get busy but its usually pretty peaceful on the expert side.

I think the patroller is wrong about PA law. PA law probably provides that if you're injured while skiing on a closed run, you won't succeed if you sue the resort. That's different from saying that it is "illegal" to ski on a closed run. I doubt that police are authorized to arrest skiers who ski on closed runs. But still, no one should ski on closed runs. That run was clearly and unambiguously marked closed, regardless of whether you saw people on it or what you were told by the lift attendant (who has no authority over terrain and should have told you to ask ski patrol).

@humanbeing24208 ай бұрын
If a run is closed, don't ski on it. The resort always has good reasons for closing a run, regardless of how it may appear to you. A run might appear to have enough snow to be skied, but that might be a dusting over rocks and grass. They know better than you because they're observing conditions 24-7 and they know how much snow has fallen and where. And even if it does actually have enough snow to be skied, they may still close it for other reasons - they may want to make more snow on that run before it's skied or they may be about to use the run for race training, etc. In any event, it's their mountain and they make the rules. You pay to ski there subject to those rules.

Grew up skiing whitetail and now live in Co. now. Vail resorts makes you take a class to get your pass back after you get caught ducking ropes. Also, it's technically illegal to ski closed terrain in Colorado and is punishable by a fine up to $1,000, so the patroller was kinda right. That said, I've never heard of any mountain actually calling the cops to enforce it. Usually its a talking to, or if its avy terrain they pull your pass for a week or two and send you on your way.
@james642029 күн бұрын

It is insane to me how the ski patrol works in the us, at my place in france if there's a closed slope, it means you will go there at your own risks, but you will never be punished for it, ski patrols are not here to enforce laws. Also the guy was telling you to tighten you binddings a bit more because your skis detach from your boots too easily but you should do that with someone who really knows what he's doing because with the wrong settings you could increase your chances of knee injuries by a lot
