Here in New Ulm, at least five inches rain in the past week. There is no sitting water in the garden, but it's too wet and muddy to get out and turn the soil. We have a lot of tomatoes and peppers setting on, just not the growth. I had to take all of my geraniums into the garage to keep them dry as they were soaked and turning yellow. Isn't it time for a vacation, Rich?

Damn Rich, I’d legit be almost in tears with the amount of work that goes into our garden here. What I would do is go and buy some new and drier soil, pot two of each peppers and tomatoes and put them in the house or garage. Peppers do not do well with too much water at all. I also think that investing in more raised beds is a very wise idea. Hopefully everything survives.

We have had 10.88 inches of rain so far here at my home in Belle Plaine. I use wood chips around my whole garden and they absorb a lot of the extra moisture and release it when it gets hot and sunny with no rain. I am at almost the lowest spot in town and I can walk in my garden with no sloshing!!!!! Drive by my home at 830 West State St (Cty Rd 6) and take a look. Over in New Prague. Most of my garden is raised 6 inches. My lawn is a swamp, but garden doing well. Peas have been loving it. Harvesting more than I ever have before. My neighbor has a huge in ground, and the flooding is around his corn, the rest has drained for him. But nature is taking in other ways. The deer, the rabbits, and now a woodchuck digging up my carrots! Pest pressure has never been this bad. Hail did major damage to my apples. Ant more rain though, and we’ll all have lake front property,

We are a bit of an island out in the corn so we don't typically get the large pests (other than rabbits). We did have a doe come through the yard but she left the garden alone. Sorry about your hail damage. We're working on an area to add an orchard. I need to drop a few more junk trees before I can plant apples and pears. We're praying for no more rain. I need to mow at some point and I might rent a hay bailer! Have a great week, Erick!

Absolutely move some of them, if you can, to raised beds. What happens with lots of rain is #1 the roots can't get oxygen #2 all of the nutrients wash out of the soil, #3 if it does warm up, the plants wilt. Everything in my in-ground garden drowned and died. Except the corn. But it didn't make corn like it should. Tasseled way before any cobs formed. Then when they did there was no pollen left to pollinate the silks. The only things I have left that are producing are things in the raised beds. We had 34 inches in a 10 to 14 day span. Sooo much water. We also are contemplating more raised beds. Hubby and I discussed it, and he wants to build me actual "row beds" Like a foot wide, a foot deep, the length of my rows. Which will then require soaker hoses on all of the rows, which is a pain, but fine.
@TheOldSwedesFarm

@@TheOldSwedesFarm The in ground stuff is toast. I'm not even fooling with it. I go pick cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. I do have potatoes in 2 raised beds. But the cherry tomatoes are such a jungle I haven't attempted to dig them. I'm afraid if I do it will kill the cherries. When they are done if the potatoes are still there, fine. If not...oh well.

Here in Central WI we are in the same boat. Thankfully most of my garden is raised beds and we have a lot of sand for good drainage. Once it stops raining it doesn't take long for the water to drain into the ground. I think we are close to 15 inches of rain for the month. My aunt on the other side of town wasn't so lucky, they had to buy all new plants to replace the ones the water killed. A suggestion I can make is to put a small ditch between the rows set up at an angle to drain the water to the end of the row, with a water catchment at the end. This would allow you to pump out excess water when it's really wet, and save runoff water when it's dry to use again for watering.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 23 күн бұрын
I love the idea. I just don't know where I'd pump it. The garden is in a low area, about the size of two football fields. I'm hoping I don't need to buy and replant. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for stopping by to watch and comment. Cheers!

I haven’t kept track of the rain but in the 60 hours I got 4.6 inches of rain. I would guess my total was about 10 inches also. I’ve have tomatoes waterlogged in the past and they did great. I was at my granddaughter this weekend at Silver Bay and they are flooding also. We saw a lot of flooding around Zumbrota coming home. Part of my garden ( beans, cucumbers, cauliflower, and squash are flooded right now. I could see where mulch was washed into the yard so I’m guessing nearly all of the backyard was underwater. It was beautiful all the way home this morning.

I had this happen last year in Eastern Ontario. Sorry but the short answer is no, most won't survive. A suggestion is go along the sides of the rows and dig a trench. Dig something that will allow the water to drain from them. The roots need to be able to breath. I lost virtually everything. For this year I added a lot of garden soil to build things up and also hilled everything. That is working really well and we are having yet more heavy rains. Best of luck!

I would add soil up in mounds around the base of the tomatoes and let them put roots on higher up the stem. Put some pine shavings in between to absorb the water. It will still be wet but won’t be sitting in puddles. Put a thick layer of pine shavings at the base of everything else. Not the thick pine shavings. The small ones like saw dust.

Hey Y'all, We are so so tired of the rain here also in Minnesota. I have kept many plants out of the ground due to the water. Everyday pouring out water from the seedling trays trying to keep them dry. All the tomatoes are just so ready to go out some might be too stunted as I am up potting them but they really need to get in the ground. Now I bought 5 plants of the household favorite tomato Genuwine Beefsteak an F1 from Bonnie plants. I sorted through them and only bought the ones with 2 plants per cup. Now there are all ready to have some suckers with three sets of leaves. I will collect about 20 of these put them in cups of water in 10 days they will are be ready to plant giving me 30 plants from buying five pots from the store. Ok so what is the point??? You could look at your tomato plants and see if they have some larger suckers you can remove and hopefully in 10 days your garden may be drier than it is today. This way the those you are leaving alone might just make it plus you will have some good cloned plants for a plan B. Otherwise you might want to restart any of the plants that will grow within the time remaining in the growing season and that window is closing everyday!! Good luck

Going through the same here just outside of Glencoe. A tiny bit under 11" so far. Not much we can do other than planning on losing a few things. I was going to say moving the plants may stress them more than leaving them, but you already figured that out. There are natural remedies that work pretty well for fungas. Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and such. I have the recipe written down at home if you need. Best of luck

Ok East Texas here. 1st let me say I wont be able to help much. You got 10 inches of rain in a month I got 11 inches in 24 hours. Yes my garden was done. Got a 10% yield on most things. I had tomatoes in raised beds and was able to get a crop after the first few batches going bad and they were never really great. As far as raised beds Im all for that. I am moving towards more myself. I have one piece of advice. Most of the youtube channels spacing in raised beds is far too much. They end up losing 75% of their garden for appearance purposes. You dont need 4 feet end to end. Ok 4 ft rows between but not end to end. I have mine butted together but no more than a foot or 2 max. My only advice to you is to replant what you can replant. Growing season dependent. I say this because what happened to us was all the nutrients were washed from the roots and they never recovered. Love the channel. Ive been here since you were around 1K subscribers. Later
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 22 күн бұрын
I agree about the spacing. I have spaced a bit as I'm trying to use the beds as weight to hold all the fabric down. I like your idea of closer spacing for further beds. I cannot imagine getting 11 inches in a day. Unreal. I hope you can get a later planting and have a productive harvest. Thanks for your continued support! We appreciate you!! Cheers!

I wonder if along the peas, beans and rows of things, if you could indent/dig in a small trench along the plastic and lead it to a nice hole you could dig out of the way that the overflow can run into and off of the vegetable plants for now. The soil would obviously still be soaked, but at least the standing water would have somewhere to go. . Almost act like a giant 'olla pot' in the ground to collect standing water. Im having the opposite problem, we are dry dry dry here in Montana right now.
