Digital Art vs. Traditional Art… what are your thoughts?

Traditional anyday !!!!
@adrian4987 Жыл бұрын
I think the idea that's "old = good, new = bad" is boring and ignorant. As someone who does both, both medium can coexist peacefully and are valid forms of art.
@tinney_o9639 Жыл бұрын
Obviously traditional. How can you feel the euphoria of painting while not smudging oil paints over your device or mix up your coffee and painting medium? How do you even get creative without the sweet fragrance of paint thinners?
@CousinPaddy Жыл бұрын
I prefer natural mediums, like watercolor, but digital is much better for working with clients. You can salvage something that went sideways without having to redo things, like say, a really nice gesture sketch that started the process.
@KlarehsArt Жыл бұрын
I've used digital for a good chunk of my life, and it's fun, but you can't beat the tactile feel of traditional media on paper, in my opinion. I haven't gotten to try gouache or oils yet, but I bet they have their own fantastic texture to them! Hoping to try them this year.

I just have to say, I always wanted to be a painter, but my parents disagreed…a lot! So instead I became a doctor and both because I have no time and because I was very disappointed that I couldn’t go to art school, I haven’t painted in 15 years. After watching your videos I started painting again. Thank you for being an inspiration! Truly!

i do digital and traditional art and i find that its just another medium and comes with its own learning curb just like starting with any other medium. it is far more forgiving than any other medium wich makes it perfect for exploration and iteration. for the first weeks i felt like i wasted my money when buying a tablet for art bvut after hundred of lines and circle practices i felt more comfortable and now the stylus is like an extension of my hand.

Thank you for sharing your experience!!! What software do you use for creating your digital art? I am wanting to give it a try for the first time
@blackhagalaz Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I did traditional art my whole life and just recently bought my first drawing pad. Its on the cheaper side without a screen and basically more of a fancy mouse, but still i really felt like I had wasted my money. For me it was more frustrating then anything else because you really need to learn your tools and settings. Its so different from just taking your brush and colours and painting intuitively. I am not really sure jet If I have the ambition to adapt this as a new medium alltogehter because it is just not as much fun (When I for example picked up Watercolor 3 years ago I was just so happy and engaged in the process). However I think nonetheless digital art is a great tool for any traditional artist to have when it comes to digitizing your physical artwork. I now use it to clean up mistakes, color correct some stuff, and maybe add a few filters and effects, that are harder to paint irl.
@stevenperez6598 Жыл бұрын
@bettytrumble4997 I use clip studio paint. It's pretty cheap and has everything you need, but more importantly, a small learning curb. You can just start the program and go. I usually just do everything on one layer super simple I've tried other programs and felt like I needed a course to use them...
@stevenperez6598 Жыл бұрын
@@blackhagalazfor me digital is well worth the investment because I'm lazy and setting up then cleaning my traditional supplies can sometimes get in the way of me making art but if I grab my tablet and start sketching with no fuss or mess I can print it out and finish with acrylics or oil or whatever
@blackhagalaz Жыл бұрын
@@stevenperez6598 Haha ok yeah that is the other side of the medal. You are right it's really quick and easy to use without the whole cleanup. I am pretty messy in general so I just do the most important cleaning right away and then leave my desk with all my supplies scattered haha. I read above you use Clipart as a programm. Did you ever use Krita before and could compare the two? I started with Krita because it is a free software but sometimes I just not that intuitive I think, so I am thinking if I maybe use a more user friendly program the whole drawing process won't be that annoying

@@katokianimation same I've had my tablet for quiet a long time now (but never dedicated classes) traditional paints are just much easier, especially blending, i takes me so much longer to produce smth okay-ish compared to analogue media . tho from what I heard there are programmes available now that can simulate real paint quite well but you need powerful hardware for them, which I don't have. maybe that's why I was so taken aback when he said "the programme does most of the stuff for you" I feel the opposie, irl the paints and brushes and paper already do so much for the texture, blending etc. digitally you have to input every single thing manually it takes out all the fun and becomes so robotic. But I don' own his painting programme, maybe it is much easier with that

For some reason I thought your style would change a lot if you changed from your trusty oil paints to digital painting. But it's mesemerizing to see that you were able to find all the digital tools that could still make you emulate your traditional style. Very impressive! It goes to show that for all types of art the fundamental art knowledge behind it is the same and just as much required.

It would actually be really cool if you painted the same thing again traditionally with oil paint and then hold both versions next to each other in order to observe if they evoke slightly different emotional responses. My observation after seeing a couple of traditional artists going digital: If you know how to paint the traditional way, creating a decent digital painting is not difficult, but a little time-consuming at first for sure, since you need to figure out what brushes to use and where are they.

As an art enthusiast, I like to (figuratively) get my hands dirty making art now and then, and CSP EX allows me to mess around, have fun, and make stuff I like. If I want to spend 50 hours drawing and painting on 30 layers I can do that, and if I want to augment my meager drawing skills with 3D models, I can save some time and get there a lot quicker. Needless to say, this piece of yours was really good throughout, despite the "struggles" you had. Trial and error's often the best way to get anywhere. btw, I highly recommend setting up a bunch of short cut buttons for things like brush resizing, moving stuff around, redo and undo. Even using a number pad they're a HUGE time saver. Nice video!!

Love your painting. Thanks for a terrific video (and all the others you do!). That middle part where you were confused about detail and shading (switching brushes, etc.) is actually fun when you get comfortable with the software. You'll likely find that using only a couple of brushes with a special one thrown in (or created) here or there is the way to go. You are correct in that there are so many options to contemplate...using what worked last time and then watching other people use the software and cherry picking their techniques has been my strategy. Looking from the digital side, the tools, techniques, materials etc. required for traditional art (e.g, trying to produce a full size painting portrait in oils) is even more daunting and mysterious. I definitely think the transition from traditional artist to digital would be much easier for most people if you can be comfortable with the technology than vice versa. :) I was raised by a traditional artist (oils mostly) but I really never drew anything but simple line cartoons until I got my hands on a drawing tablet (in my sixties) - mostly due to the ability to not ruin a drawing with an errant stroke. :) After having drawn digitally for a couple of years, I really don't find myself using undo that much but in the the beginning it (undo and all the digital tools) helped inspire me to keep creating things. There are some brushes and effects that a given piece of software will do better than real life and some it won't do at all -- the traditional artist actually has more options in many cases (it's just your 'undo' is more limited in scope to wiping, thinner and paintover :)) so it can be a little adventurous to know how to do something physically but not know how to achieve the effects with the software tools at hand...but again, that's where observing how others use the software can be a big help.

I love doing digital art. I approach my digital illustrations as I'd approach oil painting alla prima. There are endless ways to do digital. I've tried many but found I like alla prima the most. Feels like the most natural "drawing/painting experience" to me. In digital that would be everything on one layer. Happy accidents and all! Love it. I also only use one brush for everything. Too many flavors muddle the sauce for me. I personally don't like working with tons of layers and cell shading etc, as it takes me out of the painting "flow". Since the AI debacle is getting out of hand, Ihowever, I just picked up traditional gouache and having a lot of fun with that too. Do what makes you happy.

I do both. I'm currently 16, started traditionnal at 3 and digital at 13. So, yeah. 10 years difference level. Today, I usually sketch _(the most difficult and most fun part for me)_ on paper and the final pieces on digital. Of course, sometimes I would sketch on my computer, and more likely, I would do a finished, beautiful and time-consuming normal-pencil-only piece on that one sketchbook that is my size lol. Lemme tell you : both are EXTREMELY difficult. BUT, I personally find that sketching is easier and more fun, because you're not obsessed with the Ctrl+Z. As for big pieces, it's SOOOO much more relaxing to know you can just have 22571 layers and Ctrl+Z at any time.

I loved digital painting when it first appeared. It was a way for me to paint how I draw in the real world in cafes…but now in color, with no one knowing I was doing it. Because my subject was moving, and could leave at any time, I panted with big strokes using a oil type brush, hitting details last except maybe for features of the face. In those days my finger was the stylus. Now that I have a iPad Pro, I almost never think to do digital paintings. It’s weird. I think it’s a great tool to teach you painting, but in the end, there’s no original art really… so what’s the point…is the conclusion I came to. Interesting to see you go at it. I’m glad you made the video.
