There's a funny irony to it. I'll never get over how so many people's definition of "toughness" is in reality supreme ego-tickling weakness. People paying out of the nose because they have some kind of FOMO, to be abused in the hopes of one day becoming an abuser (presumably that's the end game, to also become a screaming maniac that hoses other people down) isn't any kind of real strength of character, it's fragility.

My dad’s a former SEAL and had to go through intense training. He was a SEAL for 4 years as part of a college scholarship deal. It was only when I was like 20 did i woman up and have the courage to tell him to tell his inner drill instructor to take a hike. I genuinely wish he was more emotionally available when I was growing up because our relationship absolutely sucks as of now. I take after him in a lot of ways, and I cant explain just how frustrating it was that I would set aside my pride long enough to have a conversation with him and open up to him only for him to turn around and mock me. Maybe thats just my first-born daughter energy kicking in, feeling like I have to hold it together because no one else will. It really sucks. My advice to parents is: Don’t mock your children when they pour their heart out to you, and certainly don’t subject them to 75 hours of torture. Hell, don’t even subject them to 1 hour of torture. You’ll mess up as a parent, because we all mess up as people. Tell your ego and pride to take a long walk off a short pier, get your head out of your ass, and *apologize.* Apologize when you mess up. My dad’s hardly apologized for anything, I can only think of one instance off the top of my head, and my mind can’t even humanize him if I tried. He seems more like a robotic drill instructor.

When I was 14, going through the most insecure part of my life where I felt fat for just breathing, I bought a course that cost $60. My mom said that she’d let me buy it to let me learn a lesson, but I was so sure back then that I’d show her and everyone else. The course included a 15-30 minute long 'thank you' and 'you won't regret this' video, and a link for pre-recorded daily videos of follow-along exercises. No meal plan, no personal trainer, and no results, which the advertisement promised over and over, stressing how different it was. I dropped it within a month even after trying to give it my all. Now I’m 19, and though I always figured I knew better because I never came from a rich family, I can appreciate that I paid $60 I couldn’t afford instead of $18k. It’s easy to laugh at these kinds of videos now, but I really appreciate my mom for letting me experience that.

The transformation from civilian to Marine is hard to explain for me, personally, but bootcamp teaches you to appreciate the shit that you take for granted, to struggle through the physical and mental turmoil, to help your fellow recruits/Marines/teammates/etc., to be more courteous, and to be the best version of yourself. This comment is basically it. They are not so subtlety advertising themselves as the "alpha" males taking advantage of the weak. And they expect the weak to pay $18K for the experience because merely being lorded over by such alpha men is worth the price of admission. The funniest thing is that even if you buy into the "alpha male" philosophy spreading around these days these courses teach the furthest thing from it. The idea of the alpha male is that they are generally the leader, the trendsetter and they usually project an aura of confidence, this conditioning these men are paying for is not going to amplify these traits, in fact it is going to do the opposite, this sort of conditioning is what the army uses to break down soldiers and make them more subservient to the chain of command, it is not supposed to build confidence but rather strip you of it so that they can build you back up as an obedient member of a unit, only after that will they consider putting you on a training path for a leadership role. All these chuckleheads are doing is the part where they try to break you down and making you pay for the privilege, paying for and going along with this course and serves as proof of how much of a beta male you are and I am not saying this as some sort of zing or attempted insult, going through with this course and putting up with the bullshit of the "instructors" is what by their very own definition a beta male would do.

pardon me but from an european point of view all of that looks soo american, no offence. the alpha male thing, the scam, even the idea of a paid self-improvement pseudo-military class... in the old world we just go see a psychologist if we have a rough moment. if you have 18k in your bank account to waste in that shit, you are not in big troubles are you? just see a professional, you can afford that. in most countries here the idea of an alpha male that provides and defends and shoots the bad guys is so old fashioned it's not even funny. of course that doesn't mean you get to be a usless parasite, don't get me wrong. but at least, in most cases, we don't blame single mothers and we don't mix the army with our daily lives. that's a very american issue, in my opinion. that kind of stuff creates mental health issues, makes men violent and complete Aholes. insufferable pretentious douchebags. i usually avoid that kind of people like the plague.
