I made a huge oops! As I was reading up on the racial facial features, one of the articles that popped up with pictures mentioned, Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid groups. I still feel like a total noob even though I've been in this country long enough but I had NO idea the words themselves were now used as slurs based on the viewpoint and belief of the people that came up with them. The term "Mongolian" is still used even though that term was introduced by one of those racist people who believed that Mongolians were inferior, so I was a bit confused. I am SO sorry if it came off like I was being malicious. I hope you could tell from my tone and presentation that I was not at all. I was ignorant but I know now. Yeesh 😅

Hamilton got away with race-swapping historical figures, but that only cause that was for entertaining musical play. what Netflix's Cleopatra did was race swap Cleopatra and then claim she was actually black and not of Greek descent and that is what made Egypt and other people upset. that's not "Oh this is just for fun we know the real Cleopatra wasn't black" They're like "Cleopatra was black, deal with it" Eygpt: but we have factual proof she wasn't black", Netflix: "You're just being racist"

Her twin children by Mark Anthony, a boy and a girl, were, I believe, adopted by Mark's sister. She also killed her own sister in a struggle for succession and went to war with her little brother, her husband, and he was drowned in the sinking of his warship. Egyptians are proud to claim Cleopatra because of her importance to a pivotal time in history. She can't be blamed for her suicide because Octavian, who became Augustus Caesar, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, would have made her captive and probably would have executed her anyway.

I think the most absurd part of all of this s that the creators in one breath complain that "the concept of 'race' didn't exist back then so there was no black or white" and immediately afterward talk about how they deliberately made her black as a statement. If you're going to make your decision based on race, you can't exactly say anything about others noticing that decision.

@berserkasaurusrex4233 Жыл бұрын
That's a lie anyway, the concept of race has existed for millennia. It just used to be more akin to what we call "Ethnicity" today than the major Haplogroups (White, Black, Asian). Our concept hasn't changed, we've just shifted to using different terms for the same concept. The ancient Egyptians had specific terms for non-Egyptians, be they Greek, Nubian, Arab, Persian, or otherwise. Everyone recognized the differences in ethnicity and culture between different groups, and considered each a separate racial entity. Several different groups co-existed within Egypt, but the indigenous people were their own group distinct from the others (who were mostly immigrants, relocated prisoners of war moved into Egypt by the Assyrians, or merchants).

It's not just the blatant race-swapping that's wrong, they get so many other things wrong as well. They don't even get the timeline right because in the show they claim that Rome was an emerging power when Cleopatra ruled, but in actual reality Rome had become an established power after it had won both the first and second Punic Wars. Two events that pretty much were the catalyst lead to Rome being a world power for many hundred years, at that point in time. Cleopatra was born YEARS after. (Also the Roman armour looks very poor and low quality too.) Like bruh, this is a freaking documentary and they don't even get the timeline right lol. Hilariously enough, Gal could pass for being Greek/Mediterranean and thus would've made a better casting. When I was in high school (WAAYY back in the 70s), the textbook in my French class had short essays that talked about different topics. One of them was a fictional interview with a guy who was descended from an old royal family. We had an assignment to write up a similar interview about ourselves. Two of my friends in the class (who were black) both wrote up stories saying they were descendents of Cleopatra. When I read them, I thought they were so strange. But I guess it shows that this meme of a black Cleopatra has been around for a long time.

Genghis Khan, or Temujin, belonged to the tribe called the bourchikoun, literally translating to grey eyed people. The portrait you showed on screen was one comissioned by his son Ogadai, who drew the Khan and him. While Genghis was grey in hair by the time the portrait was drawn, he still has very notable light eyes, as does his son an his son has very obvious red hair in the protrait. Temujin's wife was also named Bourtai, which means blue-eyed. You still find blue eyed people with red hair in Mongolia. Quick google search of red haired mongolians will show you some of them.

The Mongols were always one of the most ethnically diverse groups, being made up of Tatars, Rus, Turks, alongside the central Asian peoples. No telling where the red hair and blue/green eyes originated from. It is interesting that some of the oldest surviving (until the Taliban destroyed them) depictions of the Buddha and his followers showed them all with obviously red hair and in some cases red beards. In fact, quite a few cultures depicted their ancient cultural heroes as having red hair and often blue or green eyes as well. Even in the New World that's true. One of those weird historical oddities, like the common flood myths or stories about dragons that every culture shares.

I was listening that black Egyptian girl and could not get rid of the feeling: people are obsessed with race. It has become a disease that tortures souls. And one more thing that I begin to realize is that people are just afraid of each other, afraid of speaking to each other, afraid of showing interest and accidentally saying or showing something that simply not allowed and then being severely punished for nothing more but words. And as a result we as a society are becoming cold careless units everyone of their own being a nation of almost 400 millions. And then with loneliness we ask, why are there so many mental disorders? Because everything is no longer allowed, because instead of making friends we stay away from each other in small isolated groups of the same ethnicity or believes. Because nobody can be allowed to speak and a chance of mistake. I hate it this way. And with that, I've begun to despise everything that is hiding behind words such diversion inclusivity race gender etc. These words now mean toxicity hate and malice. And my most sincere hope that people would simply move away from all of the above, condemning them first, and then replacing with things that actually help people to live in respect with each other.

I see so many people saying “egyptians are not black” or “egyptian culture comes from what is modern day Sudan” and both sides omitting something conveniently incompatible with their narrative. “Egyptian History” (putting the “ because is a bit reductive, it’s the history of many cultures, countries and populations in reality) spans almost 4000 years. I remember learning from someone that for example, Pyramids were ancient history to Cleopatra herself, bejng buit 2500 years before she was born. You explained it already better than I ever can, but sometimes is not one side or another, it’s both, proved with context and background. However the issue the majority of people have, is with cleopatra and the ptolemys in jada’s so called “documentary”. (My issue is also with the romans, some looks scandinavian, please, seriously? I have always said/believed that the whole representation thing was nothing more than a "first step" to rewrite history itself in a way that benefits the people in charge, aka the state/ruling class that control the schools that propagates this ideas. It goes like this: First: They start by doing something like giving the mantel/title of fictional characters of a specific gender/ethnicity to another character of another gender/ethnicity. Think turning the Falcon into the "new" captain america or having not Pete Parker as the "new Spider Man. Second: They now start changing the ethnicity of fictional characters, think not-shaggy in the velma show and King Grayskull from He-man as an example. Third: Now they begin changing the ethnicity/gender of historical characters in historical fiction, while making little to no changes to the story itself. Think of shows like the Vicking show, the one with the british queen and the poc Cesar, and now this Cleopatra stuff. Fourth: They change the history itself, whether is the events or the description of the people themselves, in fictional history shows. Examples being the Woman King movie and probably this Cleopatra show. And then fifth: they change history itself by changing the books or the documentaries that talk and are supposed to teach real world history itself.

They can't be interested in something they can't relate to, because the Americans in general lack that level of education, flexiblity and cultural curiosity. Also, Americans can't relate to anything save their own present day national traumas and silly cultural wars. Everybody have heard about Cleopatra, so they project their own cultural issues on her. This is not about woke versus traditional, left versus right or black versus white. It is just the same old American imperialism once again! No it isn’t 100 percent known. You assume because she was of greek descent she was “white”. Ancient Greeks and Egyptians didn’t look the same as their modern day descendants. The greek dynasty she is descended from would have died out from inbreeding if they didn’t mix the Egyptian population at some point. Cleo’s mother and grandmother are unknown. Cleo likely didn’t look like Gal Gadot and probably resembled the actor who portrayed her, lighter skin, curly hair and dark eyes. The claims that busts of her appearance are as dubious as the claims of a white Jesus, whom we know is Roman Emperor Justinian. The Romans definitely changed alot and took up the culture of their conquered changing it.

@@jenothemississippianofmand5202 ''Ancient Greeks and Egyptians didn’t look the same as their modern day descendants.'' If anything they're less white now since Europeans were more prevalent than 6% globally the way they are now. ''The greek dynasty she is descended from would have died out from inbreeding if they didn’t mix the Egyptian population at some point.'' Based on? Because inbreeding isn't necessarily harmful. It doesn't cause afflictions. It only strengthens them. So if Ptolemy's lineage was affliction free, inbreeding would've done little to nothing to worsen the condition of his descendents. ''Cleo’s mother and grandmother are unknown.'' Just her grandmother, meaning she is at most 25% locally Egyptian. Look up Nora Arnezeder. She's a half Egyptian, half European actress. 50/50. Look her up and tell me she ain't white. And that's a 50/50 gal, not a 75/25 European/Egyptian one like Cleopatra. ''Cleo likely didn’t look like Gal Gadot and probably resembled the actor who portrayed her, lighter skin, curly hair and dark eyes.'' Yeah she wouldn't have looked like Gal Gadot, because she was whiter and had lighter hair and eyes. The actress is west African. Doesn't resemble Cleopatra in the slightest. ''The claims that busts of her appearance are as dubious as the claims of a white Jesus, whom we know is Roman Emperor Justinian. The Romans definitely changed alot and took up the culture of their conquered changing it'' So your entire basis for claiming that she was black, is your own pathetic speculation that everything we know was wrong? She has four busts, all of which extremely similar, all of which showcase her as European. She has four colorized illustrations, all extremely similar, all showing her with identical skin color (white) and brown to red hair. We have two written descriptions of her, one of which from Lucian who knew people that knew her, and he described her as ''white as snow'', specifically her breast area, which heavily confirms she was white since white women under a Mediterranean sun tan, while they'd cover their privates most of the time meaning those areas are left whiter than the rest. Literally every piece of hard evidence shows she was white. Cope.

As an Egyptian, I wanted to comment about the Egyptian Nubian girl who was talking about Egyptians being racists to her. It is very confusing but the Nubians, while some of them who were born inside Egyptian borders are Egyptians by nationality now, are not considered Egyptians ethnically speaking. They had and still have a different civilization, language, and culture and most of them live in Sudan. So, not every Nubian is Egyptian and not every Egyptian is a Nubian. In fact, they don't really mix. Also, Egyptians and Nubians were enemies in the past during the age of Ancient Egypt. In modern times, they have a big role in Modern Egypt. Two of our presidents had Nubian origins. They participated and had a big role in the war against Israel. Also, one of the most beloved singers in Egypt is a Nubian. But still, I understand the attack on this girl because she doesn't even look like the Nubians we know and she was born in the UK. So technically, you can not say she is Egyptian because she was not born in Egypt, was not raised in Egypt, is not ethnically Egyptian, doesn't speak Egyptian Arabic, and, until recently by law, was not considered Egyptian by nationality from her mother. And, there is nothing called as "Black Egyptians". That's a very weird western term to use. Egyptians are neither white or black, they have different shades but have certain characteristics that make them identifiable as a separate ethnic group. I am against that kind of racism , in which you insult others, but, I am still with maintaining the privacy of my society and its individuality without insulting others. Egypt has a very conservative closed society as India, China, Russia, and Japan.

Some people tried to say Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte is in the same lot and it isn't because that series and the original are HISTORICAL FICTION with Regency Era England as the backdrop. That girl that is acting Egyptian, she might have been born there, but she is not a descendant of ancient Egyptian. That is all.

I'm not surprised about that girl being shocked Egyptians have a deragatory word for black people. People have deragatory words for everybody. I mean in the u.s redneck is a deragatory word against people from the south. Tree hugger. May not seem as offensive as others but they're still used as a deragatory term.

I intend to home school my kids. I trust myself with this because I have a deep thirst for knowledge, know how to do research properly, and I've done work in education in the past. Just don't trust other people with my kids. There are people who shouldn't homeschool solo, and definitely people who probably shouldn't have kids if they aren't capable of properly raising them.

@@CevicheGato that'd be cool, but I'm more of a forest hamlet guy myself. Ideally, I'd like to find a community of people with their own quality skills and knowledge that I could trust to help me expose my kids to skills I simply don't have. Like, I don't know much about plumbing, and my carpentry is nominal at best. It'd be neat to know someone who knows how to properly tan hide, build a boat, or put buildings together, ya know? History, language, brewing, a bit of microbiology (mostly just Saccharomyceae yeasts though), grammar, gardening, and woodworking are my strongest skills at the moment. I also know how to fix jewelery, and I'm not a shabby bartender either.

@@KelliRocks Huh? Why are you displaying racist sentiment? Did black people or Martin Luther King create this show? Disgusting behavior. 1.I am not debating Anne Boleyn, we are talking the Cleopatra show. 2. it is completely racist if every time we see anything like this, the first thing you creatures mention is MLK or some other civil rights figure. Even when we are talking of fictional works. That is problematic. 3. In Cleopatra's case, her features are Middle Eastern. There is a very strong rumor about her mother being local Egyptian. The fact she was the first Queen of her Greek/Macedonian line to speak Egyptian and have a connection with the people strengthens the rumor. Now don't strawman me! I am not making claims but to compare this situation with MLK is bigoted and asinine

Thanks for making a balanced video highlighting Cleopatra's colonial Greek ancestry but also the multiracial/multiethnic nature of Egypt going back to antiquity. Nubians emanating from Sudan were assimilated and Egyptianized going all the way back to the Bronze Age, especially after the Kerma culture was conquered during the New Kingdom. Most Egyptians are brown, though, not black.

Afrocentrism is not a new trend. They also claim they were the original jews and the original native Americans. Afrocentrism has also been causing violence for awhile, in 2018 an 18 year old Egyptian girl named Mariam Moustafa was beaten to death in England by 10 black woman who thought she was appropriating their culture by wearing an Egyptian symbol.

On the one hand she says she's proud to be Nubian, and on the other hand she claims she's the descendant of the people who built the pyramids and that the middle-eastern Egyptians are intruders from Europe. Can't have it both ways. The truth is that she's Egyptian but not "native Egyptian", in the same way I'm American but not "native American". The people who built the pyramids were indistinguishable from Cananites or Syrians or Iraqis.

Being Egyptian myself I also consider her Egyptian, Nubians have been there for a very long time and are clearly part of the Egyptian history, but she's not ethnically Egyptian, unless she's mixed of course, and if it's the case her ancestors build the pyramids indeed. That being said she shouldn't be rejected for being black, Egypt has a lot of progress to do on this matter.

This video made me remember a KZbin channel called Mr. Imhotep who is literally an Afrocentric claimer of Egyptian history. Basically he bases all of his claims in the: “white people have been trying to silence Egyptian real black history bla bla bla” and he clashes a lot with real academics and egyptologists, even reaching the point of disregarding their work just because they are white. Now that is truly disgusting in every sense.

Love your video, very on point and informative. I like how you brought Genkis Khas as example. I wanted to pointed out someone who might not be familiar with the Egyptologis circle that Zahi Hawass...is not really that good of a person/arcademic, he has been accused of domineering behaviour, forbidding archaeologists to announce their own findings, and courting the media for his own gain after they were denied access to archaeological sites because, according to Hawass, they were too amateurish. He is very much nationalist and when some archeologist found a potential evidence that some structure in the Egypt preceded the Egyptian culture he accused them of lying and he is also the one who lead the excavation and exploration of the area under the sphynx, he found something there but kept it secret and board it up, prevent other archelogist to enter.
