+foreignluna I think most Dominican relate black to being African American and as a Dominican myself I can understand not wanting to be robbed of our culture, identity, language and customs. It may feel that by saying we're black we're saying we're not Dominican. And like most were a people proud of our nationality, ethnicity and history. However for me personally I know black is just a racial classification system so that's the only reason I want no part of it. I don't need another other categories or labels other than the ones I chose to be a part of.

+Alicia Gibbs (ChicaFashion) I don't know why we tend to do that. It seems carribean Latinos do that a lot. In South American and Central America they don't have problems calling them selves black or white or mestizo etc, but they aren't as mix'd as we are, probably because of the size of there countries in South America.

I think many people are biracial but people seem to only relate biracial to being black & white when in reality if you're mixed with with many races you're biracial. For many Dominicans that's the case, we have our own country but are comprised with a number of countries. Makes me feel kinda cool. I made up of so much yet have one country to go back to and a set of customs and culture I was raised on.

Biracial, racial etc are all terms invented by the original white supremacists (aka Western European enslavers). All human classification systems were created to maintain the status quo. Race is neither a biological or a genetic term, it is a socia-political term. The oriiginanl white supremacists invented human races to rationalize their continual enslavement of Africans and theft of indigenous people's lands. A hierarchy was created in which Africans and indigenous people were placed at the bottom and western europeans placed at the top. Africans and indigenous people's weren't even really considered human beings much less a "race". Botton line, socio-politically, we have "races" only because we live in a racist world as argued by many anthropologists.

Knowing where you are from and who your people are is so important. My father's mother emigrated from Jamaica, folks came from Costa Rica, and a host of other places to make up the Sullivans. I just might try this as your results have piqued my own curiosity. Great video.

And even though it was great to see it at the end of the day I'm still a child of God. I'm still Dominican but it's been awesome learning. And I think it would be great for your children. Through this I've learned exactly why I have more African DNA than European or Indio Taino. Sharing all I've learned with my hubs has been great and in the future with my children will be even greater.

Those results are very vague. Big categories instead of specific places. Also, with her English name, she (and I) assumed that there would be more British. It serves as a reminder that a name can be passed down over generations but that it can represent a small minority of who we actually are.

The detailed break down is on my blog but other that 3% British it doesn't break it down further than that unfortunately. However even so because my father's strong tie and pride even with just a measly 3% I feel the pride too. I guess at the end up the day it's how you're raised for some people. The result didn't change anything for me other than now being able to relate more with the term Afro-Latina. I thought it was just another label at first because who doesn't know Dominicans have African but from this thread many don't and many don't. I had a lot more African than I anticipated but I'm equally proud of it. 😊

Alicia Gibbs when your hair is natural you look more African, there are people in Africa who are mixed like Cape Verde, Mauritania and Morocco. The Spanish crown promoted Spanish men to procreate with Taino and African women to create 'loyal' subjects. The Portuguese figured out early on in the Congo that they could use mixed people as go betweens. My mother is mixed but she identifies as Afro-Caribbean reason being is that her mothers family/culture would not accept her as one of them

If we are going to be honest the Ethiopians(Habesha) Somalians and Eritreans fall under a similar West Asian admixture, I have witnessed this on many DNA reveals on KZbin
@tahliah6691
@tahliah6691 7 жыл бұрын
aѕajj there seems to be this myth amongst ethiopians that everyone originates from them. that statement is incorrect. as you said it's assumed. most West and southern and central Africans present 100% african dna without outside or non african dna. eg horners tend to be 50 to 60% bantu mixed with 30 to 40% arab or west Asian dna. so please explain to the world how a most central southern or west africans come from ethiopians but are purer african than horners and they don't present arab or asian dna? this is a lie and a myth. it is clear in all the horners dna test results that horners are not pure african but all are mixed with arabs african and west Asian dna. Arabs and asians are not indigenous to Africa. so whether you like it or not horners are not pure african. also Nubia which is sudan/Kish ruled most of Egypt Ethiopia somalia and Djibouti not Axum. modern ethiopia is not the same as ancient ethiopia. Ethiopia was previously known as Abyssinia then Axum which was also part of modern yemen. check any 1700 map of Africa. ancient ethiopia was south and central africa.
@tunjilegba
@tunjilegba 7 жыл бұрын
Tahnn Ju I agree there are many types of Ethiopian some are indigenous African in terms of old genetics. But Oromo and Amhara have mixture back and forth migration from Yemen. It dont make them less African because they have a mixture from centuries ago. Generally they are 60-70% depending on who you test. But, I do agree that we should double check if the genes they claim are West Asian are actually an African adaptation.

aѕajj what do you mean about the average Ethiopian ? Ethiopia is made up of tribal regions and the Oromo are the largest group. Amhara present the most Arab DNA and very little Europeans DNA. Most Arabs present about 80% Arab or middle eastern DNA. So how come they have Bantu or East African DNA and most Arabs don't? Horners are mixed African and Arab DNA check out the Ethiopian DNA online it's even more obvious to see with the naked eye. Horners are mixed. Not pure African.

Mia Williams As Fanon, a psychiatrist of African descent stated, "black and white people came into existence at the moment of imperial conquest. White depends on its stability of the negation of black. Neither exists without the other." Black and white are simply socio-political terms invented by the white supremacists. So called Black people only call themselves themselves that as they have no history or memory of their ancestors true name. Obviously their true identifies and histories were wiped out by slavery.Also, as John Henrik Clarke stated only "slaves and dogs are named by their masters." And as another author stated they oppressor can never call the oppressed by their real names.

Alicia Gibbs you consider the term "Black" to be oppressive. How do you think "Black" Americans feel? What shall we call ourselves? And yes, I do call myself African American for convenience although I am not, as our genealogy is just as mixed up as yours. I have African and "African American friends (meaning their parents are African, came here and bore them). That's what being "African American" technically means. I would call myself simply American, but I live in a society driven by race sooo what do I call myself since "Black" is "oppressive"? I really want an answer bc from your insinuation, I feel a bit of insensitivity towards Blacks in America. But maybe I am wrong. To me, if you exited Africa through the slave trade, you are indeed "Black". However, you just have a culture more strongly connected to your roots that you can be identified with or be identified by... but that's all cutural bc certainly, I could have been born there and you here.

The reason why you are only 8% British is because in the DR the term "ingles" has nothing to do with England. Instead for some reason it has been misused or misapplied. What they really mean or what you father was talking about are the black English speaking, British West Indian sugar cane workers that migrated to the DR during the turn of last century to work in the sugar cane industry. They came mostly from the Leeward islands and who are better known as "Cocolos" and that is what your father really means when he claims to have British ancestry. Cocolo is a term used in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean to refer to non-Hispanic African descendants, or darker-skinned people in general. The term originated in the Dominican Republic, and was historically used to refer to the Anglophone Caribbean descendants. Namely the Cocolos of San Pedro de Macorís, Puerto Plata, the Samaná Peninsula, and other Afro-descendants who lived in coastal areas and were culturally distinct from the lighter Dominicans who primarily lived in the interior of the country.

Slaves brought to Hispaniola were of the African diaspora. I find that Dominicans who are millennials consider themselves Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Taíno, or Afro-Latinidad because they are mixed-raced. Most African-Americans are mixed-raced as well, in fact you'd be surprised to know that most Afro-Americans are of a similar admixture. (European, Indigenous American, and African) African-Americans and Dominicans just have different cultures.

@@cariocabassa correct. That’s because the English colonies mixed less with the slaves than Spanish and Portuguese. In fact, after slavery, intermixing was encouraged in former Spanish and Portuguese (Brazil) colonies to “whiten the race”, whereas America had segregation and laws that prohibited it (although it still happened but was illegal).

***** black in spanish is used in a different context. You will never see a dominican who's skin color is brown identifying as black. Black in the dominican republic is used to identify someone who is dark skinned, not their race or identity. In america they use "black" as their race and identity even if they are light skinned brown and with european blood. So educate yourself before you go around telling people they are wrong!

Why do Dominicans and Puerto Ricans have such low percentages of Taino? (Native American). I always thought the Native DNA would be the highest but its not. They actually have very little.Don't get me wrong I haven't seen everyone's results but the ones I see on KZbin don't. The Mexicans seem to have the majority of Native DNA so why do the Dominicans and Puerto Ricans believe they are mostly Native American I'm so confused.
@AliciaEverAfter

Lisa G most indigenous people were massacred & died of sickness & disease. Puerto Ricans tend to have more Native American blood. The reason most think they're mostly Taino Indian? Probably lack of education or poor education. If they aren't taught properly they won't know.

Okay so... being "Black" myself, I have something to speak on. Being born American is why I get the title of "Black" .... It means being mixed with majority African as well as mixed with Native, European (and more personally Asian) ancestry. I don't have anything but being "Black in America" to connect to and unfortunately bc being "Black" has been negatively stereotyped and stigmatized, you most likely refuse to say "Black".... It's very offensive considering that you probably don't know anything about being "Black", but the negativity streamed through racism. You can make all the differentiation all you want, but when ppl look at you, you are seen as BLACK. We all just about got here through the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Your group of people just happened to land in Latin America and was able to preserve more of their ethnic culture bc your ancestors were granted more liberties. But you needed a genealogy test just like many Black Americans to truly learn your roots so hun, there is NO difference, but culture. We are all mixed up.... We just landed on the map in a different place. 🤣

It's institutionalized racism. It's causes separation, segregation & divide between humanity. It was made to separate Europeans from Africans as if one is better than the other. It's a color system. And if we go by color I'm brown, caramel, tan, cocoa, chocolate, beige not black.

@rahmahassan3794 8 жыл бұрын
+Alicia Gibbs (ChicaFashion) you are clearly black. Your race is black. As much as you like to deny 'race' as a concept MANY blacks have suffered oppression from WHITES. To deny this means you are ignorant and unwilling to see the history of blacks and what they have undergone. may you ponder on how you have west African ancestry? It was the hub of slavery which your ancestors suffered from BECAUSE they were black.
@AliciaEverAfter
@AliciaEverAfter 8 жыл бұрын
+Rahma Hassan I'm unwilling to further feed into it. White is European and black is African. Maybe if we stopped using the terms we'd be a step closer to ending racism. But you, you can do as you please, this is my personal preference. My parents and grandparents are Dominican so I identify as Dominican. As a Dominican I have culture and customs I grew up with that have nothing to do with being black. You can't force me to identify as black thus deny my Dominican heritage. Deny my great grand parents emigrating from the French West Indies to the Dominican Republic. So I can't be a Dominican American from Jersey. Im just black. It's ok to deny everything else except black?

+Bella Mosley I understand, what you are saying, but the bottom line is black and African are not the same thing, so I think that we are obligated to change perceptions and change the way we talk about race, and ethnic origin. In the context of this video about I think african is the correct term because she is talking about ethnic origin, which is african. The word black can mean so many different things to different people (and not all Africans are black, and not all black people are african) there is such an amazing variety of different cultures and people looking all sorts of ways. we need to stop trying to put people in artificial categories
