Got irons/hybrids/woods fitted as a 37hcp. Fitter had to explain/coach a bunch but we got through it. Not surprisingly ended up on G425 irons and 5 wood but interestingly a Callaway Rogue ST hybrid. Switched from a 12 year old set of custom fit Wishon's. With 10 years not playing and the shafts having become rock hard the difference was immense. Hcp dropped 13 strokes since getting the set. Don’t underestimate that practicing also becomes more fun when playing with the right set of clubs. More practice + better clubs means hcp drops.

A bit of a different perspective having had a fitting session atTXG this morning. Objective was to replace the driver I have been using for about 20 years. Handicap index is right around 12, but driver swing in particular is very inconsistent without any kind of consistent miss. This video and the comments from Ian that a fitting could still be beneficial in this scenario is what convinced to me go get fit. The outcome? First the swing I brought to the fitting was even more inconsistent that usual...nerves, expectations and then frustration are no doubt a part of that. After an hour or so and trying half a dozen or so different head/shaft combinations and going back to hit my own driver twice more there was really no meaningful statistical difference between any of the clubs. So for now the 20 year old driver stays in my bag. None of this is to complain about the experience with TXG, really glad I went and to the extent I can develop a more repeatable swing where the "good swings" outnumber the bad I will likely go back and/or book a session to deal with other clubs in my bag that could benefit from a fitting.

Spot on lads. When you drive only 250 yards, you need fewer clubs to achieve a good gapping. I play12 clubs for exactly this reason. My 6, 5 and 4 irons are separated by just 8 yards, so I play 7 iron and 5 iron then a hybrid, a 5 wood (goes farther than my 3 wood) and driver. And the bonus is that my bag is a little lighter 😊

I play P770 (2021), with KBS Tour 120 S. Went to a free Titleist fitting day at my local range the other day. Within 10 shots of my own club, the guy gives me a T100S with the same shaft. We cycle round the shafts, I guess so he can figure out a few things, then we land at KBS Tour V 110 S. Then flattens the head 1 degree, and it's flush central. Didn't try and sell me clubs, just gave me a sheet with the specs on it. Said there's no point in buying them now as new ones are coming, but I thought it was good. Problem is now, I'm sitting with these 770s lol. It's the same as going for a Lambo away day. After you've rallied he circuit, you need to get back into your Audi.

Was talking to a fellow golfer about this the other day: Best part about getting fit: Not a single question mark in the bag. Having confidence in every single club is game changing. Having the privilege to get fit by Ian, the astonishing part was how much strike quality hinges on the shaft matching delivery characteristics. That alone saves me tons of wasted practice and money spent on clubs that aren't right for me. Narrowing the options of equipment that's right for you makes purchasing new equipment far less daunting as well. I could go on, but I've evangelized for long enough!

I can relate to this so much. I just recently had a club fitting at Club Champion. I am not an advanced golfer by any means and still found great value in having a fitting done. I purchased a set from Amazon 5-6 years ago and found they weren't even close to being right for my swing. The fitter was able to build me a ZX5 head MMT 80G shaft which fit like a glove. I don't get to play as much as I would love to (Says every golfer) so the price point was something I was really concerned about, but I wouldn't have known the price point if I hadn't gone in to be fit.

Getting fit attention to details for me eg my iron shaft length longer than std lie angle +2deg etc. First time using X flex shaft. While now dropping hcp and senior (60) have high swing speed 92mph7i with loft 34deg no problems with ball height. fit definitely helps dropped 6.2 shots so far. Mizuno (jpx921 tours). to a degree having to learn new swing with a better fit shaft but definitely more consistent after fit and still improving as have much better feel where club head is etc. Aiming to get to sub bogey player. set lifetime PB by some distance already. That was my initial payback for getting fit. Even putter from generic high toe hang to centre shaft ping heppler c now putting avg 31-32 /round with low days 28-29 putts fitting def helped.

Then takes his preferred clubs drops my bad shots and declares I for more distance. He should have just said, go get some lessons. Fast forward 2 years I have no appetite for a fitting. Personally what I did is at my pga store in the pre-owned section I tried out 50 drivers over many months. One easily stood out and I bought immediately. The rub is I'd never have been fit for this club/shaft.

To me, the issue is not skill; it is that the efficacy of fitting comes through interation. It would provide a better perspective to put a value on the access you have to TXG facilities for training and testing or what a tour player may have for game development. It would be surprising if that annual estimated cost for services wouldn't be at least one or more orders of magnitude higher than a "regular" fitting. So, the time and cost needed to yield real results across a range of golfers are not financially accessible.

I believe, from my own experience, that learning the proper swing mechanics are far more important than getting fit for a swing that can be easily improved and give the guy a much better experience with golf. Practicing with a bad is detrimental, especially if you burn in bad muscle memories doing it 1000's of times. It makes it hard to when you finally do find the proper swing. And the bad memories keep creeping in for years. If I could go back and do it all again, knowing what I know now, I would start with the proper swing mechanics and learning and burning those into my muscle memory. It is so much easier to learn from the get go than to try to change. And the amount of money having to change clubs as your swing evolves. You will have a much better experience spending money on top notch teachers.
@JSGolfer Жыл бұрын
I understand why you make your argument. But have you considered that too heavy/light shafts, wrong length shafts, to low lofted clubs ruin swing mechanics and require unwanted swing adjustments? When do you consider the swing good enough to be custom fit for? The majority of golfers will never play under a 15 handicap and the chances of that are reduced even more if they are using unfit equipment, especially when it’s to low lofted, to heavy or too long
@chuckyz2 Жыл бұрын
@@JSGolfer I lived it. With a good teacher, he can tell you what you need to get started. He can evaluate your speed and capabilities rather quickly. He can see your trajectory and distances. Of course, you will start out in a reg as your lessons will not be swinging hard. Then as you get to the point where you can swing 100% you can then go get your fitting. A good swing can hit any shaft. Speaking of people that are not limited by physical issues. Like me, I am very healthy and flexible. People with limits would need extra time and considerations. But fitting them as they progress would be expensive and in my opinion not the best way to go about it. Standard lofts and lie will be fine to start with for most men. Regular weighted shafts too. And a good used set will suffice. GI irons are really bad for beginners too. THey reward mishits. CB or blades tell you exactly where you are hitting the face. Not enough teachers put emphasis on the importance of learning to hit the middle of the face and how important feedback is. I've been through the system and several teachers, all of which taught different swings. The real Ben Hogan method changed my game and it it was an immediate improvement. Distance and accuracy. My last and best teacher taught me the weak grip was the strongest grip. It was actually a neutral grip but most would call it weak. Thumb straight down with face square. I almost immediately went into the low 80's then soon after the 70's. And when I switched to players irons I went to scratch. I know that I wasted 15 years of learning the wrong way and a shitload money on clubs that did nothing to help me improve. The swing changes were the main factors by far in helping me get to scratch. That and countless hours practicing the short game. Countless! And I played a lot the wrong way. And I know that because of that it took a lot longer for this old dog to learn the best trick. There is a reason why teachers like Butch Harmon has put players in the top ten and even in the #1 position in the world. There is a best way. Most players will never see the 70's simply because they were self taught or, had a bad teacher or were not good learners.

Gentlemen - could you talk a bit about how body shape & size affects a fitting? I'm old & overweight (5'-10" 200 lbs) with a belly - and I'm not very athletic. My height & wrist-to-floor has me in the middle of the standard length & lie range. I need all the forgiveness & distance I can get. How does all this affect club fitting? Does lie angle, length, offset, etc change with body shape?
@jaymorin7131 Жыл бұрын
I'm 5' 8" and was over 200lbs for years. Down to 185lbs now and I would say best thing I've done so give it a shot. As for the fitting, that might depend on your swing plane type. I'm more single plane (flatter swing) around the body. I get jabs about it but I score well so it is what it is. I've been 1/2" over on the length for over 20 years with 2 degrees flat. Your swing plane will determine your club specs. The hard part is getting woods to fit the setup since very few are flat. Good luck!

Golfers should go into fittings with an understanding of what they're getting into. You can do all the testing and fitting you like but it doesn't mean it'll work in reality. If you get comfortable hitting a club multiple times in a row, then get the clubs on the course, different matter. Who hits multiple drives one after the other? Nobody other than in a fitting. Who hits multiple 7 irons in a row? Nobody other than in a fitting. Thats not to say a fitting won't help but it is not always the answer. A high HC will see little difference between any of the high HC clubs available on the market. Also new isn't always better. Fitz - uses 10 year old (approx) irons. Is he giving up even 0.5% to the field by using old clubs? Of course not.
@bumpedhishead636 Жыл бұрын
Sorry guys, although I think you explained why I should buy modern clubs instead of using my neighbor's 50 year old blades, I do not think you explained why I should pay for a fitter instead of buying discounted off-the-shelf modern clubs online or from Costco. I don't think it takes a fitter to tell me cavity-back oversize irons are more forgiving than blades and hybrids are easier to hit high and land soft than long irons. How often is a high handicapper that is average height and swing speed NOT fitted with standard length, standard lie, standard loft & regular flex?
@stevenstewart1308 Жыл бұрын
You won't know those things unless you get fit. I'd bet most golfers wouldn't get fit into standard everything, there's too many variables between swings, body types, and athletic abilities. Could you use standard clubs and play decent? Probably, but could you also play even better with properly fit clubs, definitely. Pay for a fitting and decide if you want to buy custom clubs or save a few bucks and get off the rack.

In the amateur world there is a very good chance that any low-mid handicapper who uses blades is doing so because they are a hipster trying to show off, when in reality they would be much better off using more forgiving irons.

No one is good enough for a club fitting, that makes us all equally viable for a club fitting.

none of that is typical of a high handicap golfer, you keep hitting the center or near enough. get a real high handicap golfer and watch them ruin blades.

i was at TXG Toronto store 1,5 years ago and was fitted into irons using a 6 iron only. As a 12 HCP i do not hit a 6i that well but was told that cannot be fitted by using anything else and whole fitting was crap. I got charged full tilt thou. Also, you didn't have some of the irons (Cobra) that I wanted to try. If your staff had told me that in advance, that you fit off 6 irons only, I would have realized that I am not good enough to be fitted and would have used that money for a lesson....
