But Matt said “it’s a compliment” and “it’s not that bad” completely invalidating skinny peoples feelings and normalizing making fun of them even further. If it wasn’t so normalized to make fun of skinny people and comment on their bodies, than none of this would’ve happened. The treadmill comments and so on were blatantly disrespectful I agree with you there but that doesn’t mean Matt is some stand up guy when he was being problematic too.

I know for thinner people sure, being told that doesn’t make things better, but being thin has ALWAYS been more widely accepted than being bigger. I just think the two are incomparable.

I’m a man and 140 pounds and 6’1 I can understand what it is to be made fun of for being skinny. However, I can 100% see how being called skinny and fat (or any other word that means it) is different. People that are skinny ARE the beauty standard and have always been, everything is catered for us. I want to say this does not give the girl a PASS to be mean and disrespect boundaries when asked to not be called skinny. But both of them are assholes, and for different reasons. I also can’t believe the hypocrisy from Erin, stating that she hated being told to eat more etc. and in the same breath making “fat bitch” “get on a treadmill” comments. They are so damaging to her audience. Very disappointed. Matt thanks for keeping it real.

As someone who’s been fat and very very skinny, I’ve gotten both and being called fat hurts 1000% more but skinny girls will never get that because they don’t understand the absolute hatred people have for fat people. Being called skinny is usually in a jealous way. Not that either is right, people shouldn’t comment about others bodies at all.

completely agree with matt on the chunky vs slim one. & also as a fat person, there is a history of oppression towards fat people both systemically and socially... commenting on fat bodies will always be more harmful than commenting on skinny bodies because of the history associated with being a bigger bodied person. all that to be said that nobody should comment on others bodies, especially in the workplace, so they're both the asshole.... but again, not equal.

@@kccarter6578 I didn’t even say it’s more or less derogatory- sure calling someone chunky is worse than slim. I agree. But the thin lady who called her chunky did not call her chunky right away. Only after repeated abuse. If her immediate response was to call her chunky she’d be the asshole. But if someone is going to repeatedly pick on you for your weight knowing you don’t like it, you are 100% justified to do the same thing back. The fact that she didn’t react right away is because of the understanding that being called chunky is worse than slim. The argument isn’t fat vs thin. It’s one individual giving her bully a taste of her own medicine. Not comparable to racism at all because racism can only go one way (against the oppressed group) , where body shaming can go towards multiple different groups of people and affects people on both ends of the spectrum.

I’m probably going to get some hate for this, but the take on the Starbucks story was painful to me. I’ve worked in food service before and have been harassed by coworkers and customers both verbally and physically, I’ve had customers threaten me with violence while my coworkers were instigating them from the background, and do you want to know how many times I’ve thrown things at customers, 0 times. From someone who has been actually assaulted at work a dumb name on a cup is not something that would even be on my radar, at most I would think, “This person is childish.” and then move on with my day. I would never physically assault a customer with food or anything else because at the end of the day, It’s not worth getting fired, arrested, or sued over something so childish that I won’t even remember it by tomorrow.

I think you should never use foul language in front of kids…not cool, however whether you take longer in a line or not should depend on how many people waiting. For example if 50 people were waiting then take a pass on the life lesson because you are inconveniencing others but if 5 people are waiting and 10 check outs then by all means do it. I think people project way too hard, I always thought Matt was obviously half going along being contradictory for the drama of being the contradictory voice. The problem he really had was the same one I do with the AITA subreddit in that you read between the lines in people's stories and see the holes in the story and start to mistrust the entire thing because they're obviously not giving an unbiased explanation...but as the girls said, with this you just have to take things at face value and he wasn't really clicking with that at the time.

I feel like Erin’s putting her own issues with being skinny on this. I definitely don’t think OP has to apologize and it’s fair to call her coworker “chunky” because she’s asked politely not to be called “slim/toothpick” and her coworker didn’t care. However, the whole “well go on a treadmill” is pretty gross. Erin, fat people go on treadmills. They diet, they starve, they exercise. Just like you can’t gain weight, they struggle with losing weight. But you get told you look like a model by MOST people and fat people are shamed and looked down upon. It’s not the same thing AT ALL.

before anyone comes to argue - I know it’s wrong to comment on anyone’s body and would personally never do that, under ANY circumstance (including as a response to someone else commenting on mine). there are many fair ways to approach retaliation without doing exactly what you say not to. I would think a reasonable person, who finds it harmful to comment on someone’s body, wouldn’t do that. like it’s pretty simple. so if you think retaliation that stems from fatphobia is appropriate, you’re probably fatphobic - which is a lot more harmful than calling someone thin (society’s standard) .. like come on

As someone who has been overweight the majority of my life and at times bullied, I don’t think the person is in the wrong for calling her chunky after she asked her to stop commenting on her body. I never ever make comments on anyone’s body, everyone’s relationship with their body is so different and often really complex no matter their size. The only time I was ‘skinny’ was when I was eating at all, which then caused rapid weight gain when I couldn’t maintain it. I hate when people comment on mine, even if it’s ‘oh you’ve lost weight’ that they mean as a compliment. My body, in any state, is not something I want up for discussion, opinion or comment.

AITA #1: Erin didn’t seem to be a dick like so many people are saying. There’s people who have difficulty losing weight and people who have difficulty gaining weight, sure, neither issue was mentioned, but what WAS mentioned was that the writer was not okay with being called “slim, toothpick, etc” and made that known therefore that’s totally JUSTIFIED. If you’re going to pick at people’s appearance, don’t be mad when they fire back. I saw a comment saying that slim/skinny is the beauty standard therefore the comment should not have affected the writer as much. Regardless of what the standards is, that doesn’t mean the writer agrees with that, could have weight gaining issues, or whatever it may be. They respectfully asked the person to stop with the comments and they didn’t. Also, about the the AITA 1.5 that’s Carly mentioned, the girl that said that redheads aren’t her type and her partner said slimmer people are his type, Erin was simply saying that ‘the same way he could die his hair, the same way she could get on a treadmill’. Of course, a treadmill isn’t the solution for every person or situation, but she was simply trying to get at “if you can fire, so can I”. The guy wasn’t the girl’s type, the girl wasn’t the guy’s type. Just because commenting on appearance doesn’t seem as critical to the person commenting, it doesn’t mean it isn’t critical to the person receiving the comment. Finally, I was baffled by the comments and started to watch the episode in a very worried way because of it. I Stan with Erin.

While I understand that the girl at work should’ve stopped calling her skinny and stuff when prompted and she was the asshole for that, being called chunky or fat is different because it used to discriminate people against. 46:57 my dads father passed as he was literally getting on a flight to Israel to see him, it’s an 11 hour flight and he almost didn’t make the funeral because of how quick it is for Jews. Especially in Israel, it’s common to see even same day funerals. Some cases it’s delayed a day or so (sabbath or holiday, waiting for immediate immediate family, transporting the body to its final resting place) but from the time of death to the funeral it cannot be unsupervised.

I got called CocaineChic by this old lady and I wanted to flip out. I was at work and she was a customer so I bit my tongue. I was well aware I was underweight. I constantly ate and and was a competitive dancer so my metabolism was just nuts. Now that I’ve put on weight everyone has to comment on it and it’s also frustrating. But I say personally I would rather be overweight and be able to change my lifestyle to control it than be underweight and not be able to fix it. And I’m not happy with where I am right now but once I get the motivation I know I can change it. At the same place I also worked with a chick who threw the hot coffee pot at a customer lol that place was wild!

HELPFUL TIP: Use the 5 second rule when deciding if you should comment on someone’s appearance. You should only comment on any aspect of someone’s appearance if and ONLY IF they can change it in 5 seconds. i.e. weight - this cannot be changed in 5 seconds, so you probably shouldn’t comment on it either way. whether saying ‘skinny’ or ‘fat’, all people have their own insecurities.

The last story. It didn’t say that he didn’t ask her to knock. He very well could have and she still does it. By him saying “I told her that she could see something” seems to suggest that he’s told her to knock before entering as she could see something. Why would he say that otherwise. I’d be surprised if it had gotten to this point and he hadn’t asked her to knock previously.

agreed, but don’t you think there were other things he could have done to show her she’s wrong other than intentionally expose himself to her? he knew she would come in, so he changed his usual behavior of sleeping under the blankets with the intention of her seeing him naked. Even if he did say that she needs to knock and she didn’t follow through with it, he didn’t need to jump all the way to this response.

Erin gets told she looks like a model EVERY DAY. I’ve never seen anyone talk about her weight in a negative way. She has no clue what it’s like to exist in a bigger body and how demoralized you feel by society every. single. day. With a lot of weight problems being caused by a lot of different issues that are harder to control. I agree the OP should have stopped making comments about her coworkers body as soon as she was asked.. but Erin’s fatphobia really rubbed me the wrong way. 100% agree. it totally sucks that erin has gone through experiences where people have bullied her for her body, but i wish she could understand that in no way does that compare to the lived experience of fat people. it's truly a 24/7, daily thing knowing that you are walking around constantly being judged for your body and living in a world that was not build for someone of your size. also, i've never been praised for my body type, but smaller people (especially influencers) experience that every single day. it's just tone deaf to even be comparing the struggles of skinny and fat people in my opinion, let alone using and jusifying derogatory language!

You don’t get to decide that OP pain doesn’t hurt as much just cuz of what you see in your life. OP could’ve had an ED.
