There is literally nothing wrong for “hoping for a boy”, nor is it wrong for “hoping for a girl”…. Just like there’s nothing wrong with not having a preference. We don’t have to vilify people for a wish or a thought. Obviously the husband and mother in law in this story is beyond messed up. Throw the whole family away. But we don’t have to make a big leap and say it’s wrong for parents to have a preference. I’ve noticed the dialogue around this topic gets taken too far.

In the hospital I gave birth in in the UK, they did the same thing. We have switched at birth cases here; admittedly so rare they make national news but there have been three in my lifetime. The first one, the girl turned into a family annihilator upon discovering they weren't "her real family." The second both went with one family and abandoned the poor mother. The last it's suspected the parents did it on purpose and actually got investigated for abuse.

SECOND STORY UPDATES: UPDATE 1: Update on my last post: thank you all for all the love, it means so much to me right now. I’d also like to add that I’ve seen a few comments about my story being copied, it breaks my heart to think of anyone else having to go something similar my heart goes out to them. Also, I should have mentioned originally that I had a gut feeling to record the call with my mother in law, so I have all of that on hand if it’s needed in the future. I’m planning to try catching my husband on his way out of work sometime next week. I’d like to hear his side of the story. I’ve decided, however, that if there is any saving our relationship, I’ll be changing my last name back to my maiden name and our daughter will be taking my last name or at the very least have a hyphenated name. Call me feminist or whatnot but it will be non negotiable. I’ll also be requiring MANY boundaries between me and his mother and she will not be in my child’s life until she can find it in her to apologize to me sincerely and change her attitude towards us. UPDATE 2: Wow! I honestly haven’t been on Reddit at all since my last update because well, growing a human is hard as it is, and then add my crazy life on top of it. But, after getting hundreds of emails from Reddit today, I realized it must have been shared somewhere else to be blowing up like this and now that there’s so many of you I figure I owe you all an update. So here it is. Hopefully I can get this all typed out in a way that makes sense. Even though it’s been a few weeks since this all went down, I’m still in shock and I haven’t been able to collect my thoughts (let’s just blame it on the pregnancy brain and pretend that my life isn’t falling apart before my own eyes). I was able to catch my husband as he was leaving work one night and got his side of the story out of him like I had hoped.As suspected, he admitted that he was excited for a baby girl, and after speaking to his mom, she forced him to leave and block me. His MOTHER already had the divorce papers ready to go. I tried to tell him that we could fix this. We could raise our daughter together away from his mother. (I know I sound fucked in the head and naïve for this, but I grew up in a household without a father figure and I was hopeful my daughter could have a different home life experience than what I had) not to discredit my mother. She’s a badass women and I hope I can be half of the woman she is for my daughter one day. Anyways, my husband had none of it. He said that he realized how conniving and manipulative and ab*sive i had been throughout our entire relationship and he did want to actually go through with the divorce. He said he’d have no problem giving me full custody of the ‘thing that’s growing inside of me’. That’s when I lost all hope. Fuck him. I have no problem leaving a man who’s so easily brainwashed by his mother like that. I’ll raise this baby alone. That’s bad enough, but here’s the real icing on the cake - I received a phone call from my soon to be ex-husbands brothers wife (we’ve always been quite close and she’s been my saving grace throughout my pregnancy giving me all the tips for nausea etc. she has 3 of her own, 2 boys and a girl) anyways, she informed me over the phone that she overheard a conversation at weekly Sunday dinner that mother in law and husband are trying to blindside me in court and take full custody. I was livid, full on seeing red. I called mother in law straight away and demanded to speak to my husband. All he had to say for himself was that he realized he didn’t want any of his offspring to be raised by such a manipulative freak and even though he doesn’t actually want her, he’s sure he can grow to love her again. I’m not sure what to do at this point. I know I have a good case for myself but I’m fucking terrified they’ll win the battle and take everything from me. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about my daughter growing up somewhere where she isn’t loved. Even if custody is split 50/50 I’ll have no control over the lies they’re guaranteed to feed her. My emotions are going haywire trying to write all this out so I think I’m going to leave it at that. Thank you for all of the love and support you all have shown me and my baby girl. The internet can truly be an amazing place. EDIT: adding that my brother in law and his wife are planning on leaving the family dynamic after seeing the way I’ve been treated. They have a daughter of their own and while she’s been accepted as she wasn’t the first born. They’re very uncomfortable with the misogyny within the family. BIL is the first born and I think the what ifs are fucking with his head. ALSO: had no idea I submitted this to a podcast subreddit 🤷♀ my original post kept getting taken down on AITA and my sister recommended I post it where I did. If somebody wants to send me a link to listen I would be interested to hear it. Although - please spare me the details of its negative. I don’t know if my heart can take it. UPDATE 3: Thank you so much for all of your support! I’ve been in contact with my lawyer about how best to proceed and for legal reasons I’m not allowed to give any more information at this point in time but I’ve seen all of your messages and I’m truly so grateful for all of the advice and care being sent our way. I have a very good lawyer working with me and both me and baby are and will be safe through the coming months. Once again, thank you all so much for your kindness, it’s helped me feel somewhat sane through all of this and made me realize that I am entitled to feel the ways I’m feeling. You’ve truly given me a community where people have my back and truly want what’s best for me. I’ll be logging off until things have settled and baby is born. Maybe I’ll return for a final update at some point, but for now I’m focusing on my own health and the health of my baby as I prepare for the courtroom.

I may not personally be a nurse but, my sister is one. For a nurse to get time off can be quite difficult. The issue was not the wife not wanting to go, but because she couldn't go. Hospitals are often understaffed, and even then need a lot of people to care for patients. She may not have vacation days left for the non-important events. Also many nurses may be unwilling or unable to cover her shift due to: personal plans or having already worked long hours. The husband DEFLATED her tires, and didn't take her to work. People depend on nurses to survive, and when you don't have as many workers show up as planned, things can get chaotic and could even cause someone to have serious health complications. My sister often struggles to get time off for plans, and even then is exhausted after her shifts. Another issue is that sometimes you need that shift to cover the bills. My sister sometimes struggles to make ends meet because of medical school debt.

I'm so surprised by Alejandra's initial reaction to the kidnapped wife story. The woman works as a nurse and in the initial post says they hang out as a family all the time and she makes an effort to be at the big ones. Nurses work crazy hours so maybe she doesn't want to spend all her free time with a family that clearly sees her as an object. ( the fact that he kidnapped her and thought that would be fine and his family also didn't seem to have an issue with it confirms that to me.) Marrying into a family does NOT mean you have to constantly socialize with them. This man married a nurse with a busy schedule. If you can't deal with your wife's priorities then get a divorce, you can't just take away her free will to choose because it's "embarrassing you." I mean that fact that it's not even about spending time with her but just about what his family thinks says SO much to me. He literally doesn't care about her. There's NO middle ground on this. The guy is a 100% the asshole. I don't care what the context was or if she hadn't seen his family all year, or if they could have picked a day that worked better for her. IT DOESN'T MATTER. She said no and his response was to sabotage her car and kidnap her. He's a controlling c*nt. She could have lost her job because of this.......he'd probably like that. I hope she leaves him and finds someone who can support her career.

Omg you said everything I was thinking! I’d also like to add, the husband tried to find someone to cover her shift and couldn’t! To the second story. My husband's family is like that. We are Mexican family. When I became pregnant, they insisted on a boy first to carry on the last name. My husband doesn't care about none of that shit. He has 10 older siblings and they all have boys firstborn. When we found out we were having a girl he was over the moon. Then we had another girl, then another then another. He loves being a girls dad. I always wanted a boy and accidentally became pregnant with a boy, then it happened again a boy. We hyphenated the last names and just to make his family mad, he put my last name fist then hyphen his. He really likes my last name as well as i like his. He put us first before his family ideology. The woman is lucky to have her daughter and got rid of the dead weight. It would have ended up bad if his family babysat or worse, abuse. She is lucky but make him pay alimony and child support. Not saying what he did was okay but he was 16, stupid, impulsive, rich and no parents around or anyone to correctly guide him. I saw it on the psychological level, did he do it to get his parents attention? Did he just want the company and not feel so alone ? He must of grown up with abandonment issues(although he lived with them, they weren’t around.) I think because of his age and because nothing happened as well OP expresses how well taken care of, loved she was and how happy they all were, is why they were light on this story.

I just wanna say Alejandra’s perspective on dog breeding which is a problem because of the overflow of shelter animals and on calling a nurse an asshole for … being a nurse with a busy schedule really ticked me off. He knew what he was getting into when he married a nurse. You have zero reasons to go to every family function and she said she goes to big events. So that’s ridiculous to say she’s wrong. And also dog breeding is a huge problem. We shouldn’t be encouraging it.

the last one is...... concerning at the least. the father KIDNAPPED someone. He took a woman against her will. The mom said "he was young dumb and in love" and while that may be true, he K I D N A P P E D her. He didnt hit on her a little too long at a coffee shop or cheat on her. He kept her *prisoner*. She had to (and wanted to) escape him. And then she.... married him? I can see how you would never look at them the samee ever again. Just because they love each other now doesnt mean it wasnt extremely concerning behavior from BOTH parties. Can you imagine being her parents and watching the person who kidnapped your child become their HUSBAND?! You dont just wake up one day and go "im going to kidnap someone today for funzies." There had to be a lot of darkness there before he escalated to kidnapping. Good LORD just because they are in love now doesnt make that ok. It would be really hard for me to have any respect for either of them. I wouldnt be able to see them as anything other than captor and victim in a twisted love story. There was clearly some opportunities for intense therapy that they did not take advantage of and should have.

@anmolsangha1292 жыл бұрын
Not excusing his behaviour at all… at all it is so disturbing. But like when you say there has to be darkness i would like to add in a point. My parents are from India and a lot of media there (movies and television) in all regions is extremely problematic. Like for years… and even today at times, the only way they showed a man pursuing a woman was by stalking her. So I would go on to say there could be a lot of media influence in his behaviour. There are many regions where media is even more problematic and regressive. Just a bit to add

I definitely agree! Also, I think we're missing the point. OP's mom justified the kidnapping by saying that he never hurt her. Maybe he didn't hurt her because he didn't get the chance. If they have been paying attention to their own story, she says in the beginning that it’s not like she doesn’t go to ANY family events. She does try to go to the big ones. OP was. DEFINITELY NOT the asshole. Maybe it would have been a little different if she ABSOLUTELY DID NOT GO TO ANY family event, but she did try to make it. On top of that I’m surprised they don’t understand that for nursing if she were to not go into work that day they could technically take away her license. It’s called “Patient abandonment”, it is a real cause for them, taking away her license. So all that hard work you put into nursing school enter passing the NCLEX all that time and effort would have been wasted. Her career could have been over. Happy Two Hot Take Thursday! 😀 Also, call me childish, but if I was a man and 2 paternity tests came back to me negative--I would be inconsolable and would not believe a word my wife said out of sheer turmoil lol. Crazy to hear real-life "switched at birth" stories. They better be set for life financially from that lawsuit. Awesome episode! I wish every episode were 2 hours long.

Completely agree. I couldn’t understand why they kept saying the husband was in the wrong before the update when evidence was pointing to his speculations being correct. I’d be mad at my partner too.

For the kidnapping story, I look at this from many different angles as reasons as to why I would not forgive him. Or at least note so easily. You brought up the fact of what if your mom had been the kidnapper. But think of it as what if that were your child. Sure he was a minor but clearly old enough to make his own decisions if he could drive a motorcycle and keep her there. Would you forgive that? What he did was obviously illegal and just because the story ended up good doesn’t mean it would’ve for others. Think about the trauma of that. This lady was questioning herself and only came to ask why he did that to specifically her. It’s not “just kidnapping” it’s torture. Kidnapping is a crime for a reason.

What I know from my mom who works as a nurse it's incredibly hard to take time off, and getting people to take your shift can mess with their lives and your reputation as a reliable worker as well. My mother is in a position where she's basically one of the head nurses, and they're _always_ criminally understaffed. Therefore her employers have to know that she'll be there, or her entire floor falls apart. There have been times that she's worked full shifts 12 days in a row because there aren't enough people. It's really shit. My father is an asshole about it and always on her about taking on more and more work, knowing that we desperately need every penny they make. Trust, this man does not respect nor care to understand her line of work. She's said that she takes time off for the most important events, and I'm sure she wants to be home for the holidays and a truly _free_ few days as well. (No visiting family is _not_ a free day to everyone). That's already a lot of time off in this line of work that's usually requested at the beginning of the year/month and schedules are made around that. If someone else has already requested major time off/ switched multiple shifts already for a multiple day endeavour around the same time, good luck getting free from work for a barbecue. That's all I can say 🤷🏾♀️

Please don’t crop your dogs ears btw. Sorry Alejandra, ily but that made me cringe so hard. Her poor puppy. :( I’m sure you’re good to him, but know next time that it’s not necessary and making those “aesthetic” changes to your dog can only bring more harm than good.
@jeremyfenn52384 ай бұрын
You do realize that for a lot of dogs it is recommended to have cropped ears not for aesthetic but for their well being right???? Granted this could be a situation were it is for aesthetic purposes but making a blanket statement without all things considered is not in the best interest of everyone.
@NephiylusBaphson3 ай бұрын
@@jeremyfenn5238I really don't know anything about the subject but tbh it sounds like a circumcision. Many people believe it to have "health" benefits but it's basically just mutilating a baby for no reason. If dogs really do need their ears trimmed then we've failed them as a species and don't deserve them. We've fucked them up beyond all recognition and it's so fucking unfair. Like pugs, they disgust me not because I hate them, but because their whole existence is a testament to humanity's hubris.

On the last story, as a decent of someone that was kidnapped, it was very “normal” at the time in Mexico, it really is jarring. I can never look at the person the same, and will always be look at her as a victim. I could honesty not stand when it got brought up and everyone said the same thing, That was how it was done. It’s horrible to think that people would just brush it off, or worse give her away at the “wedding” because she was ruined by social standards. And she’s not the only one I know that that happened to, which is even scarier to think that I know people that were forced to get married to someone that took them away. Can’t really understand how y’all took it so lightly, as that would definitely change the way I view someone. As for the “not hurting her”, he did hurt her. Emotionally, mentally, and probably ruined her way of thinking.

Story 4 is horrible. OP is at NO FAULT. zero. None. Nada. Shes a medical professional and she HAS TO do her job. The husband kidnapping her, manipulating her, laughing about and admitting he "tricked her" that's fucking disgusting... I'm glad she escaped and embarrassed her shitty husband.

My comment is about The dad kidnapping the mom: You guys said you wouldn’t see your dad differently if he did it to your mom because it was a really long time ago/doesn’t affect you but personally I wouldn’t want to talk to my dad for a very long time after learning that(maybe never again) the mom is clearly not in a good place and I 100% believe was manipulated by her kidnapper and obviously the dad kinda justified what he did but imagine if that same situation happened to you! personally I would NEVER talk to my kidnapper again or have kids with him Listen to the story not just as a kid with a crazy dad but as the mom who was kidnapped by a guy

My niece kind of suffered through something like that when she found out she was having a little girl. Her boyfriend went ballistic and said that she had to be cheating on him because they don't have girls in his family. I was really confused because I know he has a few sisters and aunts.

Also all this shit they’re saying about “every relationship is give and take” and insinuating that the nurse needs to sacrifice sometimes. Ok and what about her partner? Where’s his need to give - all he’s doing is taking. They spent so much time talking about how the nurse should make an effort to go every once in a while but she literally said she goes to the big events. The story with the switched baby. Most families end up keeping the child they’ve been raising. Everyone looses in that situation if they switch and possibly if they don’t. Hopefully the other family is awesome and they can raise their kids side by side and become one big family but who knows.
