The chef at Pasta Eater clearly LOVES his job. It's a tough industry, especially in NYC, so to have someone speak so highly of the owner says a lot about the quality of his restaurants.

So many Italians moved to and continue to move to the NJ, NYC, CT, RI region (basically the historical Italian Mob hotspots) and that has given us very quality Italian restaurants and bakeries. The culture is different from almost anywhere else in the US. We are spoiled enough that I tend to skip Italian food outside this region.

It's a crying shame. I lived just a short walk to Rolf's, and I really enjoyed the place. Their sauerbraten was excellent. They used to have free sandwiches at the bar during the afternoon--it was a friendly, tasty restaurant. That was 40 years ago, and it has obviously deteriorated.

In terms of the food, I don't know if it's stereotypical of me to say, but I think they ordered Wienerschnitzel and Spaetzle... which are not exactly flavor bombs if you were to compare it to something like, say, Italian food. They're more to fill you up, in my experience. You need the Jäger sauce for an oomph... and even then, it's not a bright or punchy flavor profile.

I am not Italian or Italian American (I am PR, Polish, French and Swiss German third generation) but I love Italian food, especially since I have visited Italy. I have had trouble finding authentic Italian food in NYC when I am not in the mood for Italian American but Pasta Eater and Eataly have become favorites for me now that I live here. I love that market in Eataly too-so many great items even though it is expensive.

Trieste? That's a unique part of Italy! Interesting fact, it was at one point in time an independent territory as a result of a peace treaty with Italy between 1947 and 1954 as the Free Territory of Trieste. Zone A (the area surrounding the port; now part of Italy) was administered by British and American forces while Zone B was administered by the Soviet-supported Yugoslav People's Army. Each zone had its own governor. Trieste wasn't a truly independent state as its governors had to be approved by the occupying powers. Didn't help that the Soviets kept rejecting governor nominations, as well as the political split between Stalin and Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito (who wanted the entirety of Trieste). It was eventually dissolved in 1954 through the London Memorandum and split between Italy and Yugoslavia (which Zone B was given to Slovenia and Croatia respectively), and was confirmed as dissolved in 1975 through the Treaty of Osimo between Italy and Yugoslavia.

Fun fact about the Shirley Temple: Shirley didn't actually like it! She said in an interview in 1986, "The saccharine sweet, icky drink? Yes, well...those were created in the probably middle 1930s by the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood and I had nothing to do with it. But, all over the world, I am served that. She took me to Time Square for matinee tickets to Cats on Broadway and then to Rolf's for dinner. I had the schnitzel and spaetzle as well, It was a new food and I thought very tasty. As a German I was really surprised when I saw the German restaurant, but then I was just shocked. Yes, we love Christmas and we have a lot of decorations everywhere, but the service and the noises... I have never seen such a noisy restaurant here. And it's really normal to just sit and talk for hours with drinks only. Also the food.... Yes, we eat Schnitzel and yes, sometimes with beans. But a traditional dish would be with Bratkartoffeln (sliced potatoes with ham and onion from the pan) or just French fries. Also you never eat Spätzle without sauce! Not like that. It is common to eat them with meat, but meat comes in the form of Gulasch (meat soup?) or Geschnetzeltes (thin strips of meat in souce). And personally I've never even thought about mashed potatoes next to a Schnitzel... I'm glad you tried a German restaurant, but this one isn't really German from what I've seen. Which is really sad. I recommend you to visit German on Christmas season and eat at a Christmas market :)

I have lived in NYC for 40 years. I hate it with a passion (here for work), but I have to admit, if you look in the right places, the food is awesome

You don’t eat Spätzle on your own. You eat them with gravy, melted swiss cheese or fried onions. That’s why they tasted like nothing.

I don't go no where. That has to be my favorite line. 😂 wow some beautiful places but I would have definitely given a zero for service at that one place for rushing. When you pay that much you need to let your customers enjoy it. Great video, definitely wanted to try some of that pasta and tiramisu dessert. 🥰
