Omg. I’m the owner of Madonia Bakery. I had no idea you were coming by to taste our cannoli and we are so glad you enjoyed them so much!! My great grandfather founded Madonia in 1918 and the business has never left the family. Thank you so much for visiting us and for appreciating what we do here. Please come back soon!

This might explain why a canollo has never impressed me. First, I'd want the shell baked, not fried (in dubious oil). I'd prefer cream over ricotta any day, but ricotta flavor is great, but it's almost always grainy. I've certainly never had one freshly filled. A hint of marsala in it would excite me.

I lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for 42 years. Back in the 70s, excellent Italian food and pastry was easy to find in Manhattan. For me, Bensonhurst in Brooklyn had some great Italian bakeries and stores that make and sell fresh mozzarella among other goodies. But I confess, I live in Italy now for 12 years, in Liguria. Best move I ever made. 😉💖

Loved this video Jessi & Alessio! My mom (a Sicilian) used to make Cannoli’s and I miss her and all the wonderful Italian food and culture I was raised with. She was a wonderful woman. And yes, Cannoli’s should be filled only when you’re about to eat them, otherwise the shell gets soft. My mom made them with the chocolate chips in the filling or dipped in chopped pistachios. Thank you again for such a fun video. God bless you both.

Seems to me that if your going to fill a crunchy shell with a wet filling you would want to coat the inside of that shell with something to keep it crunchy like maybe a thin chocolate coating. That way you could fill them up and at least get a few hours before they go soggy.

You guys went to Brooklyn but stayed mostly in downtown Brooklyn. Y'all looking for authentic Italian cannolis, you should've gone to Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst (Brooklyn's Little Italy). You won't be disappointed. There's a small Italian bakery where they make the cannolis fresh everyday and they'll fill them up with the cream as you wait.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 2 жыл бұрын
You won’t find any authentic Italian anything in Bay Ridge anymore. You’d have to do Tasty Pastry in Dyker Heights. Bensonhurst is also on its way out, but Villabate Alba is still there. You might do better in Gravesend, on Ave U.
@BotanicalJourney

@@afcgeo882 Villabate has the only authentic cannolo in New York City. Sheep's milk ricotta. And while all Italian neighborhoods are dead or on life support, my parents are still able to get by fine in Dyker Heights without knowing any English. You can still live an "authentic" life here if you know where to look for it. These folks unfortunately do not, but I'm glad they had a good time!

@BotanicalJourney Жыл бұрын
@@anthonyam202 That is a good place, though I haven't been there in years. Being pre-filled matters only when the cannoli aren't moving. More important to me is the ingredients. In my experience, Villabate is the only place in the city that uses sheep's milk ricotta, imported from Sicily, no less, and the taste is on par with a typical bakery in Palermo. Villabate is an excellent Sicilian bakery in Brooklyn and it would be a good/very good bakery in Palermo as well. The others... not so much. Not sure what this guy, who is from the Veneto, knows about cannoli. It's not part of his culture.

Some food historians place the origins of cannoli in 827-1091 specifically in Caltanissetta, by the concubines of princes looking to capture their attention. Desserts similar to cannoli are the Middle Eastern Zaynab's fingers (أصابع زينب), which are filled with nuts and qanawāt (قنوات), deep-fried dough tubes filled with various sweets. In Malta and Albania, they call them Kannoli and Kanojët respectively

Hope you learned that not all Italians have the same recipe. I mean that is common sense though they like to insult them and say "Thats not Italian" because their recipes may vary from their own family recipe. I mean who truly does that? It's one thing to say, I don't like this but to take away their heritage and families recipes is much different. An example, I know 5 different Mexican women who all have very different recipes for Tamales. How rude would it be for me to say "oh that's not Mexican" to one of them because it varies from someone else's I enjoy. All 5 of those ladies cook Tamales that are indeed considered Mexican in their case.

I give you guys a lot of credit for running around the boroughs of NYC in search of good cannoli… I lived in Manhattan for 7 years and it is exhausting… no less going place to place and eating all that sugar, I’d be flat on the street with a massive sugar headache. Many years ago when we lived on the Upper East Side we would go to Little Italy quite frequently on a Sunday and eat at La Mela. Back in the day, La Mela was so much fun. It was authentic, and the food was amazing, and it always felt like you were at one big party. Sadly, after the original owners passed away, it is now just like any other common place Italian restaurant in the USA. But thankfully I have such great memories of what Little Italy and La Mela used to be like. And lol…my husband and I were at Ferrara’s last summer and we had 2 pastries, a bottle of water and my husband had an espresso… $50 without the tip…. Times have changed for sure…

You need to go to a restaurant instead of a bakery. Bakeries in New York City are set up to service people on the go. So that's why they have all the prefilled cannolis. But if you want a freshly filled one then look for a restaurant because they don't prefill. They are filled to order.

I appreciate the honesty. I have been doing business in Italy for almost 30 years, and, as a lifelong New Yorker, I am stunned and shocked by the very poor quality of Italian pastries that are available here. Every pasticceria in NYC seems to be committing fraud. Most of their customers have no clue. IMO, nothing in NYC compares to the experiences you will find in Italy, if you visit the right places. I have heard the owner of Pane Pasta on 8th Street is from Sicily, and trying to bring authenticity to NYC. I'm surprised you did not try their cannoli.

I lost my cannoli recipe, but I know it had half and half, cornstarch to thicken it up can’t remember what else and dipped in chocolate chips on the end. Would never fill them until they were ordered. Now I am going to try to remember my recipe and make some.

Go to Philadelphia. Termini Brothers at 8th and Tasker. They have traditional ricotta cannoli, and they have a unique vanilla cream and a chocolate cream cannoli. They use those fillings in the Italian cream cake, the most delicious dessert on the face of the earth! And while some cannoli are on display filled, they typically will fill them to order.

You should also try Circo’s on Knickerbocker Avenue in Brooklyn. I don’t know if you two will consider it a 10, maybe a possible 5-7. Though the way they make cannolis today is much different than when I was a kid. We didn’t have chocolate chips in them

You know it's a solid cannolo when you can hear the crunch. Music to my ears. And that first location is proof that it's not all about the looks. A restaurant may have a great atmosphere, but the food could still be meh. That's how touristy restaurants tend to be. I went a place called Mars 2112 back in 2010 for my birthday and while its orange Mars atmosphere was pretty cool, the food was average and nothing special. The place actually closed in 2012...100 years ahead of schedule 😂 I also went to another place in Manhattan called Ninja (or by critics as part Broadway, part Disney World) which was known for ninjas scaring you while you dine in a ninja village and while the atmosphere there was also great, once again, the food was nothing special.

Go to Brooklyn on 18th Avenue, Villa Abate. The best in New York, hands down! The ricotta comes from Sicily. Amazing pastries.

Need to go to a restaurant in Boston's Little Italy named Riccardo's. They fill them at your table, and they have all kinds of different toppings for the ends of your cannoli like chocolate chips and pistachios

You should have went to Pane Pasta in the city. It is owned by a Sicilian baker and he imports the cannoli cream from Sicily because he can’t get the sheep’s milk. The comedian Matteo Lane has a video on his KZbin featuring it.

Quite a few places import their cream from Sicily, but it’s the shell where most lose out.

It's so easy and cheap to do a good cannolo with what they have to do their bad cannoli, I really don't understand. Just decent ricotta, balanced sugar, fresh crust, and some nuts.

I tried the cannoli in Cafe Palermo and hated it. It was my first cannoli ever and thought that it was supposed to taste like that. I will be in NY again in September so maybe I should try out Madonia bakery!

I want to take that challenge!!! When I was little we lived in LI NY. We would visit my grandparents on Sundays in Bensonhurst in Brooklyn, NY. My Nonno Ferrari would take us to the pastry shoppe to get Italian cookies & cannoli's. I love cannoli's!! I don't know the name of the shoppe

DiFara is sadly not worth it anymore. Dom died and it’s not even close to the same. However, two new good places in Park Slope: Baciccia and Ottava. Both have fantastic, authentic Italian pizze. Baciccia also does a great pasta carbonara and Genovese specialties.

My thoughts exactly. The best. I grew up in the town right next to to the town of Villabate, which is the town the bakery is named after. I know what a real cannolo tastes like and "Villabate bakery" is the closest you can find to the real thing. Wish they had tried it.
