This might explain why a canollo has never impressed me. First, I'd want the shell baked, not fried (in dubious oil). I'd prefer cream over ricotta any day, but ricotta flavor is great, but it's almost always grainy. I've certainly never had one freshly filled. A hint of marsala in it would excite me.

I lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for 42 years. Back in the 70s, excellent Italian food and pastry was easy to find in Manhattan. For me, Bensonhurst in Brooklyn had some great Italian bakeries and stores that make and sell fresh mozzarella among other goodies. But I confess, I live in Italy now for 12 years, in Liguria. Loved this video Jessi & Alessio! My mom (a Sicilian) used to make Cannoli’s and I miss her and all the wonderful Italian food and culture I was raised with. She was a wonderful woman. And yes, Cannoli’s should be filled only when you’re about to eat them, otherwise the shell gets soft. My mom made them with the chocolate chips in the filling or dipped in chopped pistachios. Thank you again for such a fun video. God bless you both.

You guys went to Brooklyn but stayed mostly in downtown Brooklyn. Y'all looking for authentic Italian cannolis, you should've gone to Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst (Brooklyn's Little Italy). You won't be disappointed. There's a small Italian bakery where they make the cannolis fresh everyday and they'll fill them up with the cream as you wait.

You won’t find any authentic Italian anything in Bay Ridge anymore. You’d have to do Tasty Pastry in Dyker Heights. Bensonhurst is also on its way out, but Villabate Alba is still there. You might do better in Gravesend, on Ave U.

@@afcgeo882 Villabate has the only authentic cannolo in New York City. Sheep's milk ricotta. And while all Italian neighborhoods are dead or on life support, my parents are still able to get by fine in Dyker Heights without knowing any English. @@anthonyam202 That is a good place, though I haven't been there in years. Being pre-filled matters only when the cannoli aren't moving. More important to me is the ingredients. In my experience, Villabate is the only place in the city that uses sheep's milk ricotta, imported from Sicily, no less, and the taste is on par with a typical bakery in Palermo. Villabate is an excellent Sicilian bakery in Brooklyn and it would be a good/very good bakery in Palermo as well. The others... not so much. Some food historians place the origins of cannoli in 827-1091 specifically in Caltanissetta, by the concubines of princes looking to capture their attention. Desserts similar to cannoli are the Middle Eastern Zaynab's fingers (أصابع زينب), which are filled with nuts and qanawāt (قنوات), deep-fried dough tubes filled with various sweets. In Malta and Albania, they call them Kannoli and Kanojët respectively

Hope you learned that not all Italians have the same recipe. I mean that is common sense though they like to insult them and say "Thats not Italian" because their recipes may vary from their own family recipe. I mean who truly does that? It's one thing to say, I don't like this but to take away their heritage and families recipes is much different. An example, I know 5 different Mexican women who all have very different recipes for Tamales. How rude would it be for me to say "oh that's not Mexican" to one of them because it varies from someone else's I enjoy. All 5 of those ladies cook Tamales that are indeed considered Mexican in their case.

I give you guys a lot of credit for running around the boroughs of NYC in search of good cannoli… I lived in Manhattan for 7 years and it is exhausting… no less going place to place and eating all that sugar, I’d be flat on the street with a massive sugar headache. Many years ago when we lived on the Upper East Side we would go to Little Italy quite frequently on a Sunday and eat at La Mela. Back in the day, La Mela was so much fun. It was authentic, and the food was amazing, and it always felt like you were at one big party. Sadly, after the original owners passed away, it is now just like any other common place Italian restaurant in the USA. But thankfully I have such great memories of what Little Italy and La Mela used to be like. And lol…my husband and I were at Ferrara’s last summer and we had 2 pastries, a bottle of water and my husband had an espresso… $50 without the tip…. Times have changed for sure…

I have been doing business in Italy for almost 30 years, and, as a lifelong New Yorker, I am stunned and shocked by the very poor quality of Italian pastries that are available here. Very good choice with Madonia but you need to go to villabate in brooklyn on 18th avenue. May not be filled while you wait but filled everyday

YEAH!!! I’m soooo happy you found the prize cannoli. I could almost taste it. I enjoy all of your journeys into different worlds of food. Can tell you two are in love, beautiful 💜❄️💜

I tried the cannoli in Cafe Palermo and hated it. It was my first cannoli ever and thought that it was supposed to taste like that. I will be in NY again in September so maybe I should try out Madonia bakery!

The best Cannoli I had was over 20 years ago at a little mom and pop Italian Deli in NJ run by 1st generation Italian immigrants. The shells were filled while you waited.

I agree that they need to be filled fresh. Although Venieros has good stuff.

I would like to see a New Haven CT excursion. Besides the pizza they have some good bakeries as well.

You should have went to Pane Pasta in the city. It is owned by a Sicilian baker and he imports the cannoli cream from Sicily because he can’t get the sheep’s milk. The comedian Matteo Lane has a video on his KZbin featuring it.

Quite a few places import their cream from Sicily, but it’s the shell where most lose out.

@@afcgeo882 I believe the shells are imported as well

You need to come down to Philadelphia to Termini Brothers. Best Cannoli I've ever had, they fill it and customize it (with chocolate or nuts) while you wait.

Highly recommend Panino Rustico in Brooklyn. Idk if their cannoli is authentic but it's freshly piped

Where were you guys eating the pizza at the end? I live in NYC so I totally add your recommendations to my list lol
