A lot of people miss the optimistic theme if this song. He's not reaigned to it just being the way it is. Instead its the characters in the song saying so, and he's saying "no, don't believe that. We can be better".

There is a strong feeling in the south of tradition, and this makes folks despair of change. It’s a very southern concept, “that’s just the way it is.”

Me too, I am a 65 year young woman, first generation College graduate, first Generation High School graduate, I was raised so badly I told myself at a very early age to not grow up to become someone like my parents, don’t get me wrong I loved both of my parents when I got to be with them, but those times were tough because of alcohol and domestic violence which landed them in jail or psychiatric hospital several different times. I left “home” at 14. Got a job and now my Grandson who I was lucky to raise is getting ready to graduate college this coming December, so I am proof that things can definitely change, so don’t you believe them. Love your reaction.

Its funny how some folks look to Beavers Cleaver's family as the bar. It isn't real. Skin color, or finances, or mental health, or addiction is in every family. It may be denied, but that doesn't make it go away. Sometimes, it only takes one thing to change the course. Like a good grandmother, to hold it together. Thank you, for your contribution to our world with a grandchild to be proud of. I'm proud for you. I'm sure you and I would be great friends.

Great commentary on this song. Bruce Hornsby is such an incredible pianist. He accompanies Bonnie Raitt on her song. “I can’t make you love me”. One of the most beautiful breakup songs ever recorded. I hope you will find time for it.

Bruce Hornsby is an amazing Human Being. Seen him umpteen times with his band and both opening for and then performing with the Grateful Dead. As for the video being blocked, it seems strange because I've seen many reactors do it, with no problems. You Tube is just waaaay too fickle, so sad. Doesn't stop Bruce's talent though.

Great breakdown, as always. If I can add to the perspective of 'that's just the way it its', I think it also suggests the reality that bad people will always exist, and to not let them have an influence. There has been, is and almost always will be racist people, a racist mindset..... and to not make it all about race....but just naysayers and negative people in general who love nothing more than to suggest to anyone what they are and are not capable of. It's a sickness, and is around in all walks of life. You carry a lot of wisdom, happy to support your channel. I'm glad I found it.

I grew up in the tidewater Virginia peninsula area, very near Williamsburg where Bruce Hornsby lived(s). Not only is Bruce a very successful and talented singer/songwriter he is an awesome human being as well. He is very well liked among other musicians and has collaborated with many top tier talents. When asked how he felt about his song being sampled, he said that the message in the song was still (unfortunately ) relevant and that not only would it reach a larger audience through Tupac’s music, but it would also renew interest in his music.

About racism and classism. Many people in lower income are treated like crap regardless of color. Racism has improved since the 60s, but still needs more. Classism is worse, people idolize celebrities and billionaires more than ever. Billionaires and celebrities are just people, often horrible people since when you can do anything, you may not think if you should. Love to our huge human family.

I was a high school student in Virginia, when this song dropped. Since Bruce is a Virginia native, he got HEAVY rotation on the radio stations, there. I got so sick of hearing this. Now, I love it. It shines a light on some unpleasant realities, while also showing some faint glimmer of hope. In all honesty, I have to say that Bruce is a better pianist than Sir Elton John, or Billy Joel.

Thanks for this reaction, JMBOY TV. Born in the year of Brown v Board, I'm old enough to remember segregation first-hand, and the heroes mostly from Black churches who energized and organized for justice so effectively that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed a decade later. "The Way It Is" came out in 1986, lamenting the enormous resistance of the white establishment to equal rights for all. (See also James McMurtry's "Ruins of the Realm": kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIOlgJiGgqijpsU ) So, here we are, SEVENTY YEARS after Brown v. Board, SIXTY YEARS after the Civil Rights Act, FORTY-EIGHT years after "The Way It Is." And what are we seeing? The frantic, panicked last stand of frightened people who see their privilege evaporating in the face of demographics. And great thanks for mentioning Tupac's sampling! His video was so powerful. ❤🔥 kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4nZc515hJZsh7s

I'm not surprised. I always knew, even as a teen in the 60s, that it would take at least a full saeculum (lifespan of an entire generation) for things to fully change. I certainly had no illusions then that those of us for whom segregation had been a factor of our childhood would change on the inside. However, it would be very wrong to say that nothing has changed since then. The US is practically a different planet from what it was when I was a child.

still lingers and, the line, "Thats just the way it is", isnt some vacant that was then statement, because, even if we dont believe it, thats just the way it is-still. As you mentioned, the the political and personal action by those that dont want change, is powerful. And it just wont go away with laws (especially when the court can be changed in a heartbeat) or good intentions. Everyone must take extraordinary actions in stepping up, on the lowest social level-the everyday stuff.
