I picked up one of these a couple days ago, it's my first smart speaker I am really enjoying it. I live in a one bedroom apartment, and put the dot in my bedroom as it's a good central location for it. I think it has good room filling sound for a smaller room, and maybe the full sized echo for larger room,s or a dedicated speaker system via Bluetooth, or the 3.5" audio out. In my case, I don't have any Sonos products but I have a couple of the 36" 5.1 sound bars from Vizio as those are good as space saves for places not ideal for discrete speaker setups. They're also good for a full 5.1 Home theater setup for smaller spaces as well, the bar has the front three speakers, a 6" wireless sub, and then the rear speakers connect wired to the sub. I've paired my dot via BT to the one in the bedroom and it does add some nice range to music, but the built in speaker is also very impressive, and listening to vocals, or even acoustic music, isn't bad at all. When I was doing my research on whether or not to buy the full sized, or dot, a friend reminded me it really didn't matter since I had BT as an option for external speakers. So that's the advice I would pass along too, get the Dot if you have external speakers to connect with, and save money. Functionally they do the same thing.

And if you play your cards right you can get them on sale quite often. I have 4 of them and an Echo Show 8 in my kitchen. I tip from me to all of you. If you can play music on multiple echos at the same time you may need a new router. My old one would stop when I tried that. I got a new one and it plays all of them without a hitch.

Your review was the best one I've seen so far. Many had poor audio quality or didn't get to any point. Oddly, every single review goes straight to the audio quality for music listening on the echo dot...but are people really using these for music? That's the last thing I'll use it for. lol I just bought 2 of the gen 3 version, first time ever using an echo device. We have Smartthings at home and I also bought a Play 1 speaker from Sonos along with the echo dots (all gifts for my Wife). A little unsure about having a device like this in the home, especially with 3 young kids (and I recently read some kids learn their first word as 'alexis' thanks to having these in the home...kind of sad really). Also bought 4 smart plugs that I've never used before, hoping to fully automate 1 room at a time in my house, starting with the livingroom and then the kitchen. Curious if any of this stuff ends up being used daily or just waste of time (gimmicky).

I'm 99% sure the xbox will work, but not sure about the tv (2016 Vizio P Series) or the receiver, which is a 7 year old Onkyo (no wireless or anything). I'm sure my kids will have fun talking to it though. Do you know if you can restrict which voice it recognizes?

That's weird. I have an old 1080p vizio and onkyo receiver. My receiver is around 7 years old as well and I was able to get it turn on when the tv turned on. I don't remember if I did it through my xbox or not though. As for voice recognition, I think only Google Home does that - not alexa unfortunately.

It use to work fine, but after we moved a few months ago something got messed up.

I just got a echo spot, I love it so much! and here’s a cool thing you can do, you can either ask Alexa to turn on whisper mode and when you whisper she whispers and turns down the volume, you can also turn it on in the app.

Dot will work with shore power but will it work with 12 volt current when out on the water? What would I need to do with battery pack for moving away from power source and wifi connection. Will I be able to access downloaded content from my android tablet via Alexa? What settings if any should be enabled?

Yeah you should be able to as long as it can get wifi. It takes a while for Alexa to boot up though - like 3 minutes if I remember right.

It does not use USB for power now which is a big let down IMO as I have my 2nd gen dot plugged into a usb port on my speaker as it saves using a mains plug. Can't do this with 3rd gen dot :(

Dot is smaller with pretty good sound. Normal echo is a larger better sounding dot basically. And the plus I think sounds the sound but can be used as a hub for some smart devices. I think that's right but don't quote me on that.

Yes you can name them, but I don't think it would work with an Xbox. All the plug doesn't is allow electricity to go to whatever you have plugged in. My Xbox doesn't turn on when I plug it in the wall, I still have to hit the power button.

My Dot 2 is a lot more responsive than my Dot 3. I'm not sure if it is going to take some more calibration or not, but so far, my Dot 3 needs a couple of rounds of Alexa....Alexa....ALEXA!! I'll stay patient with it and hope it gets better.

Hi from the U.K.. Since looking for a sensible & believable review of the brilliant Mpow Flame earphones and finding yours (you made my mind up to buy some... 👍😊). I am now thinking of buying the 3rd generation dot. Just watched and enjoyed your review. Now for the one question that will help me decide to buy one or not (please don’t think I am dumb for asking it, I did 3 years at University getting my mental health nurse degree...). If I use a 3.5mm aux jack to connect my 3rd generation dot to the speakers I use on my laptop, will I get stereo sound or just mono from both speakers? I know 2 dots can be paired to be used as a stereo speaker system, but for the time being I want to use my existing stereo speakers via their 3.5mm aux plug. I hope you will find the time to reply to this question and help me decide to go ahead and buy a 3rd generation dot (more than likely the “Heather Grey” version to match my shrine to IKEA furniture bedroom... 😂). Exactly what does the Element hub do...? Also I'm assuming you have the smart plug for all lights that you want to use the voice features? I have the UE Boom 2 and it says it works with that as well too. Any advice on these questions would be greatly appreciated 👍! You're review sold me on it and I think it was totally worth the $. Also does it work or have anything to do with Amazon prime, I have that app and also tried the 30 day free trial with unlimited Amazon prime music, mine just arrived on the 12th and it was late when I got off work so I'm trying to figure out other features and glad to know I can use KZbin with it. I have the Moto z play and have the projector mod and it would be good for the sound quality for such a small device.
