I have the 1st gen alexa and 2nd gen echo dot and I know for sure the echo is more reliable, the alexa needs un plugging and re plugging when it goes offline about once or twice a month, The echo has yet to need that. But the tall alexa, music still sounds great in my living room and I don’t use the echo in my room for music. Mainly alarms and turning lights and plugs off and on. ( the drop in feature is my favorite, as I can drop in on my elderly folks and they don’t have to give a command. Just start talking )

Wow I am trying to understand this??? Why are customers main focus is the speaker. The main reason I got is for my smart devices. The speaker is a huge plus in my opinion. The convenience of being able to control you main electronics in the house by voice is great especially from the bed. The thing about the echo speaker if it is not good enough for you the use the bluetooth or Aux problem solved.

I believe there is lot more difference other than fabric body and sound quality. I can see 4 different dots near the 4 buttons in the new echo. I believe those are recorder sensor. If that's true then new echo can get voice command more accurately than previous and maybe they have the new feature which can say that from which direction the command is coming from. At first, when I saw the new design I thought they have introduced 360 degree speaker output in this version. Though I am not sure, coz I haven't got one. I made this comment base on my intuition by seeing this new device. And removing the USB seems a drawback to me. Because it's more convenient to connect to a charger or other speakers via speaker rather than another medium these days.

It's literally just called an aux cable and you can buy them super cheap on amazon (like 5$). You plug one end into your echo dot and the other end to external speakers so when alexa talks/plays music it comes out of the speakers instead of the echo device itself.

The Google sounds more direct where the echo sounds more like it has a slight surround sound. Just the difference in the Google having the speaker dump straight out as opposed to the echo dumping to the edges. Which one vibrates less off of a slim edge? If you point the Google at a wall a certain distance it will sound like a nose surround sound which the echo cannot do. I found pointing my midi at the wall gives it a better sound.

My guess is that it was a supply chain thing. They already had a manufacturer for the pin style adapters for larger echo speakers. By eliminating the inclusion of a USB adapter, they can streamline the packaging and production process and shave a few precious cents off of a lower margin item.

I don't think it is the pricing > cut cost, it is most probably to monopolize so that we all end up using their accessories or whatever. It is just the same as Apple. Presently I can use any power bank or third party power bank, Fremo which i have two. This 3rd gen echo dot is definitely not on my wish list even the sound & mic are better.

Yes! just as long as you have Bluetooth. Just say “Alexa, turn on Bluetooth” then go on your Bluetooth settings on your Bluetooth. Then, connect!

Be aware that these will arrive with the base firmware minus all the advanced control scripts. You will need to update the software to get full use out of it. "Alexa, check for software updates". Otherwise it will not have full control of your devices nor Fire TV Cube.

You can use any provider that can integrate. Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, Google, and Amazon Music are all supported.

I wish they kept the usb micro connector, or at least went to usb c if they're making the change. Also that new mute icon looks awful, should've kept the crossed out microphone. Definitely happy with the improved auto though, form the demonstration in this video I thought the dot sounded a fair bit better though.
