I worked for a major large tech corporation for many many years...there was a policy that that started maybe 5 years prior to COVID that an interview panel (when interviewing potential new hires) wasn't considered diverse unless there was a woman on it. As a woman, I was sitting on panels for technologies I wasn't that familiar with and didn't know the team priorities or goals, but hey, a woman was present so as long as the diverse check box was filled, it was all good. It was all such as sham - I wasn't on the panel for my talents, I was on because of my gender.

@@patrapoutrouli Eowyn has one of my favourite scenes in ROTK purely because the film ( and of course Tolkiens works ) set up the watcher/ reader to root for Eowyns character by placing statements like her brother Eomers. Stating that war is the province of men. And this is not to be taken as an insult but coming from a place of caring, love and respect. Theoden also states as much. But it is this that makes you want Eowyn to succeed. You WANT her to prove them wrong and stand/ die by their side. Eowyn also never tries to elavate herself above others, merely to 'fight for those she loves'. It's not about power but endearment, respect and to be given the opportunity to represent herself with her kinsmen; as a rohirrim. Galadriel in ROP is just written to appear one note, always right, stern, takes no quarter and tough without character. She does not fight for those she loves as we have not SEEN her love anything. She has no endearing qualities were Eowyn is lovable almost immediately. Even IF her soup is horrible.

Agreed. I have bit of mobility issues. When I was listening that list - I thought it was literally the opposite of what it was trying to claim to be. Like trying to be 'non discriminatory' but managing to literally discriminate literally by even making that bloody list. Besides I think movies set to certain kind of stories or history should respect the cultures and times they are set into - for real - so, no not all places used to have for example colored folks at certain time in the past. In that kind of a case it isn't discriminatory, even if it does not include all the variety of different kind of people. And also there really are even white groups of people who have historically gotten discriminated against. But that does not mean one needs to go on showing a wrong image about something historical. Or indeed, twist the appearances of cultures in some darn fantasy story - because that author who created it actually did a lot of work to invent all set layers to make his environment alive. As a writer - that is one of those most fun parts about writing - the ability to invent a world, its peoples and such. Even the invented cultures have value, because some of those features will have story-line related importance. Starting to push some 'variety' into environments that did not have that to start with only makes them seem literally racist or discriminatory for trying too hard to not be. Besides, roles and jobs should really go to people who have the skills. In true equality none of those 'groupings' matter one darn bit - everyone has their changes based on their skills and weather they fit the task at hand. Say like, if they match the looks and manner a character is written. I for one don't want to be made feel like I am somehow a member of a weirdly special group that has to be babied.

This might be phrasing used by the 'woke' crowd to reflect their 'identity politics cult'. I guess according to the cult you never are something, you simply identify as such. Bizarre to apply it to disabilities. Morffyd Clark mentioned in an interview something about being dyslexic. It seemed out of place to her point, but I wonder whether she was meaning to 'identify' as disabled to identify with that 'victim class'.

As a young child I read. From literature I learned of religion, politics, about different races, and history. Books by Dumas, Dickens, Twain and many, many others were more than the story. It was about the time they were written in. Descriptions of the time and place was important. When you modernize classic literature and turn them into cartoons, soften all the edges. all that is lost.

Basically, they ask you to look at two photos, one is a white older men in a suit, and one is a young woman (or thinks they’re a woman) with blue hair and pierced tongue and tattooed throat and pick which one you think looks like a manager. If you pick the guy who’s dressed professionally and NOT wearing a shredded pleather miniskirt, they show you a pop up asking you to “reflect on your bias” and try again. It just gets worse from there. Diversity quotas are the death of appreciating each others’ differences and gifts and cultures.

They wonder why things go to shit. I've met many women and black colleagues that were excellent and it diminishes their hard work when someone else gets promoted for targets. Qualification and years experience is what matters. Maybe remove sex and race from cvs and have interviews of the top few people then there is no exclusion and only those suitable for the role, but when I mentioned this it was apparently racist to as systemic racism holds certain people back but even though I don't belive it in modern times in doesn't matter you still need to be qualified hiring a token employee white others have the required qualifications is plain wrong

Yeah, they make no distinction between white cultural groups. The Rings of Power pays little respect to the British/Anglo-Saxon culture upon which TLOTR is based, and The Witcher series pays little respect to the Polish/Slavic culture upon which its world is based. To the industry, these are just stories about white people and therefore ripe for modernisation.

His response, with a bit of a knowing smirk, was "the only class of people that have no protections from discrimination are white men between 18 and 54." White is not a culture indeed. It is just a race, and not as clearcut as some might think. In Europe, people don't tend to consider themselves as just "white". This is such an American thing to approach the world and people divided by races, and skin colour. It is so odd to me personally. An Irish white person is not the same as an Australian white person or an American white person because of our culture and heritage. America is an insane country. How Amazon, Disney, etc. works. *A film about Africa (Lion King)* -- We gotta ensure that every character is played by a black actor to ensure authenticity. *A film derived from ancient English lore (RoP)* -- Yeah, there were no black people back then. But we're going to throw diversity at it anyways. The original content never mentioned how important it is anyways to the characters and story. *A film derived from old German folktale (The upcoming Snow White)* -- Ok, yes, the appearance and race of the character is explicitly mentioned, hence why it's called "snow white" and it takes place in old Germany. But screw it. We're gonna play the role with a Colombian. *A film derived from old Danish folktale (The upcoming Little Mermaid)* -- You get the pattern. I agree with what "Desius Does Stuff" mentions here in the comments. They bend the rules of their own playbook. They are ok with homogeny for black actors, but not white. It's a double standard. I don't know how anyone can interpret this in any other way other than the fact that they simply have a problem with white people. People know that’s the case and can see through it by this point.

As an African american i can confirm that their is a major cultural divide between multigenerational African American's and migrant/ first generation African Americans. Their is actually a lot of animosity between the two groups that is far too complex for me to explain. I'm also Irish and Native American. I'm super light skinned, partially because I never go outside. A lot of people think I'm a Spainard and will speak spanish to me. (It happens all the time when I'm in Mexico). My hair looks like it's black/dark brown but it's actually a real really dark red. (Found out after i tried to lighten it). It's also super thick and curly. I also have a big bushy beard. I would say I settled into Irish viking more then African American or native american. My favorite music genre is hard rock/heavy metal, i have the hair and beard, and wear a lot of black and leather clothing. I also use a lot of Irish and British words, phrases, and curses (atleast for an american). I'm also super snarky.

I actually think it was shoehorned into Reacher. His old army buddy isn't in the book that the series was adapted from, and she is both non-white and non-female, with hints that she has PTSD and may be a lesbian. The difference is that she doesn't feel out of place the way she's introduced, and it helps that she's a real character from the books as well so it doesn't raise so many eyebrows. I don't have a problem with her being there at all, but I think the writers/showrunners knocked it out of the park by ticking off their diversity quota in a way works without alienating the book fans or making it obvious they were ticking boxes.

@adarian
@adarian 2 жыл бұрын
Hiring quota's always lead to a reduction in quality. It leads you down a path where you get to a point where you have to take someone who is not as good as someone else just to fill that quota. "Historically marginalized" is a blanket perspective that fails. Every race and culture has been at one time or another marginalized or worse. There was an African slave trade to the Americas. There was also a white slave trade to the Middle East and North Africa at the same time. Millions of slaves were traded East to West and West to East on the Silk Road. Jewish people have been treated terribly through a lot of history by various groups. Pick an Asian group and they have been mistreated and marginalized by some other group nearby over and over in history. No matter what race, culture, etc etc you belong to you belong to a group that has been mistreated sometime in the past. The past is past. We should be looking at individuals who are actually still marginalized in the current time period and seeking to change that not looking into the past to see whose ancestors were treated badly.
