Very interesting! When I was in HS back in the 1970's I built a Heathkit anemometer (wind speed & direction) and installed it on my parents house. My niece and her family live there now but it still worked until about 5 years ago when they removed it when they built a new addition to the house. It worked thru many Nor'easters here in Gloucester, Ma. including sustained 110 mph winds during "The Perfect Storm" in 1991! Because I boat often I rely on phone apps for my weather info. Best Regards, Jay

I have an AcuRite weather station, that has a tipping bucket style rain gauge. Spiders like to make a home in these and their web can keep the bucket from tipping. When they stop reading rainfall, I take it apart, clean it, and stick a couple moth balls in it and reassemble. Then it works fine. This was the manufacturer's recommendation.

Enjoy your new weather station! I am a weather enthusiast and have built my own stations using various sensors, typically high quality second hand sensors from expensive commercial stations that I connect to microcontrollers. Its a fun hobby. Last fall I finally decided to experiment with the Ambient WS-2902C station simply because of the low price. So far I'm pretty impressed. After spending some time to calibrate the barometer I started sending data to Weather Underground, WeatherCloud, PWS Weather, Ambient WeatherNet, CWOP, and to the NWS. My only concern so far has been that the wind speed is often low but I only have this station mounted 15 feed off the ground as opposed to 35 feet. I took the extra time to create the accounts at all of those weather services above to setup the station to share to them. To me that has been the most rewarding and enjoyable part. Like others have commented the Davis Stations really are some of the best but for the money Ambient gives you the biggest bang for your buck. I have several Davis stations but the current subscription fees take the fun out of it. The Ambient stations while lower quality blow everything else out of the water with the ease and wide range of sites you can send your data to. Its pretty neat to have your data appear on the NWS page. The Ambient website has a lot of details on how to share to more sites than just Weather Underground and AmbientWeather Net. If you have an iPhone and you are sharing your data with Weather Underground I recommend the iPhone app called PWS Monitor.

Take it from someone with wind exposure that rivals an airport- the 2902 is very accurate with wind speeds and gust speeds lol. I often top our nearby airport (both of us on exposed ridges but I am almost 1000’ higher) and that is with my station being only 10’ above ground. I would say the wind accuracy is even a tad beyond my Davis VP2, especially my WS-5000 which is on the same pole as my VP2 anemometer. That last line said, people might be surprised how close a 2902/2000 or 5000 is to a VP2 in accuracy. And my VP2 is the 24hr FARS model. The AW stuff responds to temperature changes WAY more quickly (a good and a bad thing as spikes become more common in low wind + direct sun but the VP2 spikes too) and the RH is actually better on the AW stuff but the VP2 is known to have a wet bias anyway. Rain gauges are very close (my VP2 having the newer aerocone funnel) but would give slight edge to AW actually. WS-5000 has 4.9 second wind updates vs a VP2 with 2.5, so it is pretty close when compared to the 2902/2000’s 16 seconds and the sonic anemometer will actually measure those extremely brief gusts that can make cup anemometers struggle having to ramp up. I love my 2902 and recommend them to everyone but the 5000 is my favorite station I own followed by the VP2 6153. My 8-year-old WS-1400-IP also has a soft spot in my heart for obvious reasons, still running strong and accurately after spending a measly $150 in 2015 on it 😅

I have an Ambient WS-2000 and love it. The ability to have remote temperature sensors is what attracted me. I have the main sensor array located on a 15' pole about 150' from the house and connectivity is never a problem. With 6 remotes and the WS-2000 I have about $500 invested. The only thing lacking is a heater for the rain gauge to measure moisture during snow events.
@jeffstrains4014 Жыл бұрын
Do the remote temp sensors have the same range ability's as the main unit? I was going to just get the 1902 I like just seeing indoor, and outdoor. I am currently using a separate unit with 3 sensors to monitor other areas. Could combine all in one, although I am not seeing the ability to name the sensors the reading is coming from.

As a meteorologist, let me just say that the BEST home weather station money can buy is the Davis Vantage Pro 2. The reasons are numerous. Better sensors, better range, more accuracy, longer lasting, no need to change batteries, lots of options like 24 hour fan aspiration, repeaters, soil moisture readings, UV readings, bird spikes for the rain bucket, etc. The list goes on and on. You simply can't beat a Davis station. All other brands are in one group, Davis is in their own group. The latest iteration has even higher accuracy temp/hum sensors which puts them in the same league as government mesonet stations. Pretty amazing for the money. I had my Davis station in service for 12 years before I happened to stumble upon a brand new one at a consignment shop for a song. It was a model with ALL the options and they didn't realize it was a $1,200 station and sold it for $250. So now my old station is on the shelf for parts. But yeah, you can't beat these.

I’ve added the WS5000 to my shopping cart numerous times, but never pulled the trigger. Recently I have been reading the reviews and there are some serious concerns. Failures of any device can always be expected, but how the company deals with it is important. Ambient Weather seems to be failing at that. Apparently they were acquired by new owners. There are numerous reviews stating poor or non-existent Customer Service. Water intrusion and durability are mentioned too. Also having to return the entire unit for a failed sensor repair is not the most desirable situation. I’ve decided to go Davis as I had originally considered in the beginning. The Vantage Vue is a few hundred dollars more, and the Pro 2 is over twice the price, but I am now convinced they are worth it for many reasons. AW is in my rearview mirror now.

Installed my sons Christmas gift on the Rohn-25 tower today. I couldn't get the holes on the support arm for the ultrasonic sensor to align perfectly but I did manage to get the bolts to go in although I wasn't happy about having to essentially force the bolts into place. And I couldn't install the rain gauge as shown since I side mounted to a Rohn-25 tower - I think I'm going to change the mounting when the weather gets warmer. I didn't buy all the accessories but I plan on buying the lightning detector in the spring when his birthday comes around and maybe I'll buy those anti-bird spikes for the rain gauge if birds become a problem. The air quality monitors might be a good idea also.

You can replace individual pieces on AW stations now too. Ever since the 2902 it has become common practice for them. I love my VP2 6153 but I will always own at least one AW station for their FAR more modern user interface and out-of-the-box connectivity + general affordability. UV and solar radiation standard. No need for third party software like CumulusMX to get rapid fire WU updates (even paying Davis $120/yr for their top WeatherLink package nets you a best of 1 minute updates; I get 3-8 second updates using CumulusMX). Easier to own, set up, and maintain as well. My VP2 is my second favorite pws I own, close to the first which is my WS-5000. My 2902 not far behind as third, and my 1400-IP that is 8 years old is just the special one in muh heart 😆

I’m working on my second La Cross system. This last one has been working very well for almost 5 years. It give me adequate information. This one does not work on weather underground. They all need someway to record data to a memory card. They came out with a newer model about a year ago that has Wi-Fi. My first system never measured rain fall. For worldly forecasting, I follow Frankie McDonald on KZbin. Not only does he give me breaking alerts, he tells me how to be prepared. (That’s always the best part). Simply Safe may have some temperature sensors for your odd locations. Wyze has some sensors for moisture, temperature, but you need buy into their home automation system. Bird spikes on the rain gauge are typically straight like a pin making it impossible for a bird to perch. I suggest double checking your set up. It looks like a small bird would not have a problem perching on the bent pin. Otherwise you'll have to clean it frequently.

I put 3 in my yard, well within range of the weather station (they go in the ground and are powered by battery), to monitor my turf moisture levels. Keep in mind that the temp sensor mounted that high will likely give a different reading than one closer to ground level. If memory serves, the NWS takes temp readings from a sensor 4 or 5 feet off the ground with the sensor in a ventilated box..
@Weather_Nerd Жыл бұрын
4-7’ is recommended (3-4’ for rain, 33’ for wind). Most will see a difference of nothing, up to 2-5F warmer for low temps (depending how much wind up high vs ground; same wind- same temp but no wind vs some the sensor without will always be colder). Daytime temps will be more accurate if anything because consistent airflow on these stations with passive rad shields is extremely important in direct sun (even my Davis VP2 with 24hr aspiration fan needed consistent airflow to avoid spikes or just plain reading 3-5F above actual, constantly). It’s a pws, you make sacrifices for 1-2 variables to have the best data for others. Rather my low temps read slightly warm and have better wind speed/direction and max temps than the alternative but that’s just me. I got the VP2 to ensure the thermo/hygro and anemometer were entirely separate though, and eventually I’m even going to separate the rain gauge from the thermo/hygro so that the temperature can get maximum airflow and rain gauge can be away from the wind. As best as I could considering I have wind exposure like an airport lol exposed ridgetop living

My system here in Scotland is somewhat simpler and requires no batteries or power source. It doesn't record results but provides accurate weather information, day or night. It also works as both a light source and a ventilation system, although it provides very little light during the hours of darkness, which is inconvenient but, for the price, we can't have everything. It was pre-installed in every room of our flat and, apart from basic cleaning, requires no maintenance. Each unit shows a dynamic, panoramic view of the Scottish Highlands, although this varies, according to your location. As far as I'm aware, the system is available worldwide and adjusts to your location without calibration. It came without instructions for use but the user interface is so simple that absolutely anyone will manage to operate multiple units with minimal effort. The only down side that I've encountered is the fragile nature of the main material used, which will break relatively easily if used incorrectly. Because of this, some care is required when adjusting the settings. 👌👍😁

Mounting on a 80 foot pole is not possible Highest nearby point is the house which the entire property and lot is actually the highest elevation point in the neighborhood. Most other houses and even trees in the neighborhood sit at a lower elevation and the chimney in the center of the roof which is actually even with the tree tops in my yard Its possible to mount a 8-10 foot pole on the chimney making it taller than the trees and 30’ AGL then don’t know how much the roof impacts the wind speed accuracy and temperature not to mention we are in the lighting capital of the WORLD literally. Off topic, what sprayable fertilizer did you end up going with? I got the same jug of field and pasture from tractor supply and honestly didn't notice any difference. I also have 14k sf to cover and put the whole jug down. I would love to know what worked out best for you and cost effectively......

Those wall mount pole holder's are Dish Network/ Direct TV satellite holders. If you look hard enough they're everywhere people are throwing those away all the time.

I'm in the market, how is it after 6 months? Does it display the the 24 hour temperature change? Thanks for the video.

Really like it. App shows all the history you might want. Quite reliable, and temps seem accurate.

Been looking to get a weather station. Good info! I'm leaning towards Davis Instruments, but will for sure check this one out! Did you look in to Davis Instruments?

How is the weather station working out now that you've had it for a while?
@TractorTimewithTim Жыл бұрын
The temperature has quit reading. I have not diagnosed. When working, the temp was very accurate. Love the wind gauge…with no external moving parts and the rain gauge I can leave out all winter :-)

Now that you have had the Ambient WS-5000 for a while, would you recommend it as a reliable weather station?
@TractorTimewithTim Жыл бұрын
Yes! Great job with both temp and wind speed…and no moving parts for the wind speed. Love it!
