Sanger was Uber Irish-Catholic. Her mother suffered tremendously because she was always pregnant but always having miscarriages. As a result she formed Planned Parenthood. In the Irish-Catholic community there was pressure to have too many babies. She wanted women to be free from this burden. It wasn't until later when she changed her talking points to eugenics because it was mainstream.

My father was born in 1929& my mother was born in 1930.What intrigued me the most was the elders Of my parents.Meaning their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, great aunts and great uncles.Most of these elders had such a casual attitude about how society viewed them.I mean they had the sense that the dominant society hated them with a passion solely because of skin color.And if society could find a way to be rid of them in a discreet way,it would have been done.You would think these elders would have suffered from bouts if anger, depression and confusion.But instead these people still had enough humanity to give the younger generations in the family all the love, emotional support and encouragement they could want.Just rock solid people in the mist of so much unimaginable hatred in that period.But unfortunately there were some elders who internalized that pain.My mother ,aunt and uncle were deathly afraid of doctors and hospitals.All three siblings were born at home in the Jim Crow Louisiana of the late 1920s& early 1930s.There were countless stories of Black women who were "Tricked"into sterilization from either being hospitalized or just a routine examination.So that generation and older tended to self medicate or rely on home remedies.My poor mother gave the Army doctors fits when her four children were born in a hospital setting.It took me awhile to understand this behavior.To the point of saying to myself, what on earth did the medical establishment do to our people.But it did encourage many members of our family to go into the medical profession.They had to be doctors, sociologists, psychologists and anthropologists all rolled into one.To better understand human behavior and generational trauma.Thank you for highlighting this issue.It is painful.But the story has to be told.

This are a lot of reasons that people of color have to be wary of the medical establishment. There’s too much to go into for a comment (Mama Doctor Jones has some good videos on racism and sexism in medicine), but much of modern gynecology and obstetrics was “discovered” by nonconsensual experimentation on black women. Have you heard of HeLa cells? Taken without permission from Henrietta Lacks, a black woman, this cell line was until very very recently primarily responsible for all cells developed and used for cervical cancer research. There are some very serious medical ethics that need to be brought to light and reckoned with!

It’s a current issue for some of us who experienced it. I saw how all my grandparents behaved and mistreated each other because of these horrible beliefs. You did good detailing all those involved, but you failed to mention Charles Darwin’s cousin Sir Francis Galton using Darwin’s theory to support racism. Then there’s also Ford who believed in it and promoted it. So much messed up history here and I don’t know how we made it out of this.

Good old survival of the fittest for the environment. People leave out the "for the environment" part intentionally. People also forget to remember that environments can and do change. But Darwin took that into account. It's called cherry picking. There is a historically persistent group that has made a lifestyle out of cherry picking...they built a religion where cherry picking is the whole culture. Accuracy and facts do not matter to them. And wouldn't you know it, those were the same folks who were interested in anything they could use to support their claims to authority. Darwin's theory was a victim of this.

We often look at low-socioeconomic families with judgement if they have a large family yet do not pass the same judgement to large, white families of higher socioeconomic status. These videos are well done and often prick my heart and deepen a resolve so that we can be better. Keep it up!

Something to…meditate…upon, from THE most radical guy I’ve ever known. One day, in a group and over beers, dude flat out said that Hitler inadvertently saved “African Americans” from an outright extermination program. In light of Dachau and Auschwitz, it would have been a PR nightmare that the Soviet bloc would have had a field day with, had the US authorities started rounding up black people and shipping them off to death camps…hence the idea of “benign neglect.” In summary, “we broke them, we don’t want to invest the resources or the time it’ll take to fix them and we’ll be painted from Moscow and Beijing as Nazis and worse if we actively work to kill them en masse. So…we’ll keep them in the worst possible living conditions and if they die, they die. Oh, well.” Unfortunately, there was no such thing as a smartphone in 1992. A video of the ensuing hilarity would have gone viral like ESA woofed up to a million (shout out to the old “Get Smart” TV show)!

I remember my mom talking about the sterilization thing... I was born in 1970. I also remember my maternal grandfather ( of English decent) being very interested in people's last names and then commenting on the origins. As a kid I just thought he was knowledge about ancestry... I later learned he was assessing peoples authentic whiteness... My mom's family believed they had German/British heritage... my dad's was a mixture of everything else... Spanish, black, native, Jewish etc. My mom was the first and only person in her family to have an interracial marriage when it was newly legal. Non of her family attended her wedding... There is SOOOOOO much to unpack with my families story... your videos are so personal to my story. These should be used in the classroom... @nytn in my opinion filters, swiping, followers and likes are causing people to think there is a very small percentage of highly desirable people. I watch a lot of street interview channels that ask people what they desire for a mate. Basically every man describes an "Instagram model" and every woman describes a wealthy male "influencer". If ether group is given the statistics that describe an average man or woman they reject them immediately. It's pretty interesting to me.

Very good video covering this topic. I'll add that anyone who has had involvement with indigenous communities has heard of forced sterilization. I've heard far too many stories. In a way, manifest destiny paved the way for this type of thinking. Indigenous people were often written about as being "primitive" and "impeding progress" so forced sterilization was the next step after mass murder, displacement, and starvation. I like how you detail the 1920s as a peak of this movement and how our current culture was shaped by events at that time. This country has a lot of healing to do.

The scary thing is that the Supreme Court considered this stuff "science" for a long time. The "Separate But Equal" clause ruling that came from Plessy v Ferguson was an 8 to 1 majority ruling based on the "science" of white supremacy. So if you were to believe in racial equality at that time you were considered to be "anti-science." This should teach us all a lesson about the dangers of blindly accepting the science of the day as an absolute fact, simply because there are many elites in the professional class who stand to benefit from that interpretation. (Remember when Dr. Fauci said "I am science.")

To the people who may think this is no longer relevant: I have recently heard white people I know saying things like, "Only the N's and mexicans are breeding these days; we need educated whites to have more children ". And 35 years ago I was with friends (a couple) in the south, driving somewhere. The husband all of a sudden sped up to a high speed. Alarmed, I asked why are you speeding like this? To which he replied, "I'm trying to hit that N. He should stay on his own side of town where he belongs ". I was horrified. My own mother (my grandmother was from Arkansas, mom was born on California) freely threw around the N word, was horribly bigoted and used terms like "porch apes" when we'd drive by blacks in front of their home. Don't kid yourself. There are factions and groups today, some old guard founding fathers type organizations, who still purport eugenics.

on the last bit, nativism always had reared its ugly head, and some first gen and second gen forget the things their familys had to endure comming here, how much they were looked down upon, as for eugenics it is rearing its head in the form of pressures like certian people are pressed with abortion or eunthinasia, almost to the point that they think some people should off themselves that they are being a burden on society that if there is suffering they must be put out of it like a animal at the slightest whim of discomfort, all life has value I tell you even if they are sitting there unable to move a person can still teach another to have compassion and pitty and not be hard hearted, or one can still pray, if nothing else and it can do great things or offering up tribulations and joys pains is a real thing and can be meritious, I know this is virtually unknown outside the catholic or orthodox churches, and I know the world dont want to hear it, but it is a thing, and suffering can not only built mental strenght, help understand others, it can by bearing ones crosses have value and not in vain, its a shame that people think so little of others just because they might have ancestry from a hotter place, or smaller nation, or from a place that dont have resources to be able to do and achieve things dont mean they have less dignaty, we are equal but not in all facillities and station in life, if we were that would be boreing.

My college history teacher said that all history is is the study of human beings. As far as those people who say stop dredging up the past, that was a long time ago, etc. Please set them aside and continue to do what you are doing and make us aware of this history. As far as the eugenics movement goes, I remember the director of the historical society in Louisa county VA was telling me of that and even she concluded it took on its worst form in Germany under the Nazis.Sure there are traits in humans that are considered undesirable but humans also have emotions and feelings that need to be acknowledged and respected, and most humans would rather marry the people they actually love than to be with someone simply because of their genetic material and/or wanting to pass down those traits to create "superior human beings". I mean one can't do but so much to produce "the best human beings" out there due to genetic stock. And Bell disapproving deaf people have children and that guy who advocated the killing of blacks....that was whack. When I study history I often wonder how I get through learning the violent, gruesome, terrible, etc. Bits of history other than, "I manage somehow" For example, sterilization..... definitely the buck sisters should not have had sterilization been forced on them. And I definitely am aware of Sangers racism though I did delve into it as deep as you did. I didn't know she had a relationship with the KKK. I did know that the reason abortion clinics are in poor, black, etc. Neighborhoods is that Sanger actually had in mind to control the black population. Sanger was an awful person and this video helped me realize how awful she actually was. Before I watched this you could say that I had no idea. But yes, what Sanger and the KKK wanted for blacks was evil. And to be honest, I am definitely not a fan of planned Parenthood to say the least because of Sanger. Sangers views of people? Yuck!

Totally barbaric. Today it would be illegal. Or is it? Sterilization is typically used on the severely disabled individuals in institutions. In a strange twist of fate I came across an interesting situation. One of my little friends had a sister who was afflicted with microcephaly. She was little better than an animal. The family tried their best to take care of her at home. Finally the family had no choice but to institutionalize her. The father begged the staff to have his daughter sterilized out of compassion for his daughter. Thinking that if the staff didn't watch the other patients or staff she could be raped and get pregnant out of the deal. Psychologically, the sexual assault alone would destroy her; let alone being pregnant. But the staff explained she had legal rights even as a severely handicapped person. They refused to sterilize her. They were not allowed by state or federal law even though the parents were the legal guardians and the daughter was obviously incompetent and incapacitated. Figure that one out. In another set of circumstances; sane, rational African American women who had a single child that was healthy but had had numerous physical problems having the one; and had requested sterilization; were denied. At least a number of years ago; a woman would have to have three living children by age 18 before Welfare would allow her to be sterilized. It went down to two by age 21 years. And down to one by age 25 years. Conversely, if she actually wanted more children she could be forced to be sterilized. So much for the great state of Pennsylvania. There was also a time when a person with epilepsy could not get legally married. Then the lawyer changed and they could at least get married; but they still couldn't have children. But they couldn't be sterilized even if they wanted to. They couldn't adopt either. Birth control didn't exist and it wasn't an option even if it did. And a couple had to prove that the partner with the epilepsy had it under control with medication. How do I know all this? Because my uncle who was born in 1921 had epilepsy. He died of Altzheimer's in the late 1990's as I remember right. My uncles wife was already too old to have kids anyway when they got married. And she had all kinds of female problems. My grandmother, my mother's mother was so petite when she gave birth at a hospital that her pelvis pressed on the side of my uncles head when he was being being born. The doctor was totally incompetent snd should have been sued by today's standards. My uncle started having epileptic seizures at age 6 at night. His left wrist started drawing up into spasm gradually after that. The entire left side of his body stopped growing after he was 12 years old.

They don’t want to remember what whites have done to Black people, indigenous peoples, etc. They don’t want it known that tge Nazis came to America and studied Jim Crow and the eugenics movement ideas when they were developing their anti-Jewish “policies.” Please don’t stop making videos!

Some wealthy or rich white people also don't want to disrupt the status quo because they're benefiting from it. So, they discourage teaching K-12 students about past and ongoing systemic mistreatment (including of people who are now considered to be white), they promote or allow people to conclude the notion that "people are where they deserve to be" due to their own efforts, lack thereof, or other deficiencies, and they encourage or allow regular people to fight among each other instead of uniting to improve their lives (which would disrupt the current distribution of wealth and power). They don't really care about white students feeling bad about American history - they don't want white students to grow up and work with non-white people to raise top marginal tax rates, close tax loopholes, increase public spending on regular Americans, limit the influence of wealthy entities on our governments, etc.

Don't apologize for doing this research. Eugenical thinking is still very much with us and there are always periods when it breaks into the mainstream. Just think of Plato's Republic or the stories of forced sterilizations/abortions in US prisons that are still going on to this day. The eugenic movement was also very popular among the intelligentsia in Prussia and Austria-Hungary even prior to WW1 and was mainly aimed at remedying the massive social dislocation caused by the transition from feudalism to capitalist markets. And although eugenics itself has become a taboo word since, it keeps crawling back under different harmless sounding names like "bioethics" and "sustainability" or "human capital theory". And looking at the rapid political transformation of post 2014 Ukraine for example, it becomes clear that the slippery slope is not just a cliché but an accurate characterization of the phenomenon.

In classic immigrant countries such as australia and the US eugenics had logically a racial component. In germany, britain and sweden it was all about creating stronger healthier workers who could produce more. I think danielle mentioned it as well that the goal in the beginning in the USA was also to get fit for industrialization. Also to eliminate bad social behaviour, basically crime within the working class executed to one anothet, was believed could be cured. Hence in britain and germany even the labour parties (political left) were highly intrested and implemented some ideas in their political program. Cities like Birmingham, Gothenburg and Berlin were literally exploiding and the qualitiy of life in the workingclass area was plummeting and created all sorts of problems that also affected the upper class. Hence eugenics at that time was mainstream and viewed as positiv from the socialist left to the capitalist right. Well it got ugly in germany when the NSDAP took over. They certainly were enthusiasted by it and renamed it Erbpflege (heritage care) or Volkshygiene (people hygienics). All naturalist that were into eugenics became members of the party and got the ressources they needed. The nuerenberger racial law were already in place so the target were mainly Volksangehörige (members of the people(volk)) Well as you can imagine they did not hesitate and were not squeamish. It got ugly. Hundreds of thousand were sterilized or killed. Also breeding programs started. This of course killed the whole scientific field forever one should assume. Wrong. #bioethics Although we want not accept it and it is hard to admit it but it is by no means a pseudoscience and it will, probably at some point in human history, raise its ugly head again. I mean nobody nowhere sad never again and closed the field..that speaks volumes! Another thing to consider; in modern times where we can choose our parters, we all are a bit of eugenics ourselves (especially women) because we look for certaine traits in a partner with whom we eventually father children. Controversial i know...what do you think?

Didn't Oscar Wilde say 'America went from barbarism to decadence without passing through civilization'? Something like that, pretty good observation, I don't think you have to be light in the loafers to say stuff like that these days. I can recall my first grade nun from Germany telling me in the fall of 1960 that if JFK wins he'd be dead in three years when I was being led out early to go see him at a train stop. My mom got her sent back to Germany the next year! There's really an underlying story of U.S. Oligarchy, the Bush/ Kennedy families feud going back to times when Bush' wouldn't allow Kennedys to join the Grand Oily Party in Boston. They both even knew when the Crash was gonna happen and were still rich through the 1930's. It's no wonder these rich Eugenics followers backed the NAZI's rebuilding Germany as the Zionists got in bed with them to march the Pale off to Palestine.

@@nytnconsidering that the room isn’t the best acoustics wise I’d recommend using a lavalier mic (the kind you clip on your shirt) or a more professional shotgun mic. You see the problem is that although you have a great mic the reverb in your room makes an “echo” effect due to the sound bouncing off of your plain, untreated walls. To minimize this, get a mic, like a lavalier or more pro shotgun mic, that will allow you to focus in on your narration. The lav mic mixed with a lower gain (input volume) should 100% fix your sound problems. If you like RODE’s easy to use functionality maybe try the Rode Wireless ME (Newest Release) or the Rode Wireless GO II (comes with an extra mic for a guest). It’s wireless and you can clip it on to your shirt which in turn will allow you to reel it in on your voice. Hope this helps!

But this is why it’s important to tell the WHOLE STORY, and not redact the evils in American history. Because how else will we know what to expect in the future without knowing what has been tried in the past? History doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes. When Wall Street’s collateralized debt obligations (CDO’s) helped crater the housing market and world economy in 2006-2008, they quietly rebranded them as bespoke tranche opportunities (BTO’s) years later. They are wrong as science would prove with the human genome project. Haplo group C is from around Afghanistan, about 60 thousand years ago. They moved and mingled with other groups. African North African. Asian then moved to North America and displaced the natives but they also mixed and became hb1, aka western European. We never go back just forward.

Many people prefer to "forget" the fact that abortion(with the euphemistic name of "planned parenthood")and racism have always gone hand in hand. It is not about oppressing women,but about exposing racist people
@lindyashford7744
@lindyashford7744 Жыл бұрын
Planned parenthood was a world wide movement spurred by the idea of overpopulation and was not about abortion at all. It was about planning for small families and slowing down population growth so overall growth was not out of control. A lot of different ideas were a part of that movement. As a young woman I worked for an ob-gyn who was affiliated to the International Planned Parenthood Federation which was influential globally and I used type up papers to be presented in their conferences. Limiting population growth was definitely an accepted eugenicist attitude that led to politicised policies during the 1970’s and later. These ideas are not things of the past. There are long echoes to bad thinking, in that once they are deemed acceptable people often do not question them. Actually millions of people do this as a matter of course in our 21st century world, they plan their pregnancies, often a lot later in life than in the past, when pre contraception it was not unusual for a woman to have ten or more pregnancies, and lose several of her children or even her own life. Nearly everyone plans their family these days….. There are less accepted aspects of eugenics that are also present, disabled people being prevented from having relationships at all, some of the newer ideas around abortion, and in some places vans that will help older people on their way…. There is like many other attitudes good mixed up with bad, and some of the bad is truly awful.

I watched a show in which an older White man talked about this movement. He was sterilized due to things like truancy, as he was not disabled at all Still, he served in World War II. Check out the Lynchburg Project that explains how they put poor and rural White (not just minorities) people in a concentration camp and used them for slave labor (something people are just too afraid to mention).

When you study history and read the old testament of the Bible you can see why so many people are heartless towards people who don't look like them. If you want to know the nature of a country and its people, just observe landmarks, national heroes and holidays. The Catholic church has done evil on a mass scale globally. And after the genocides they gave us Jesus. Once people are convinced to believe a lie, they will hate you for telling the truth. You will be lucky to have 1 friend. When you start connecting the dots you will know who are the puppet masters and who are the gatekeepers. It always puts a smile on my face when I see someone who values Truth. Keep up the good work. Always remember that some people have a vested interest in keeping things hidden. Those will be the ones who are triggered😂

Thank you so much for this, I am amazed by how deep these rabbit holes go. I shudder to think what is on the other end of this. And by this, I mean the hatred for our neighbor, the violence against "the other" and everything that goes hand in hand with it. It's like the underlying theme of human existence. And yet, I am still hopeful that we can change for the better. The truth sets us free either way
@ubetrue
@ubetrue Жыл бұрын
@@nytn The rabbit holes go deep indeed. In fact, when we study history, we focus on the past but in reality, human nature doesn't change. The same beliefs that people had hundreds (and thousands) of years ago are with us today. A world that is rooted in misogyny will continue to produce misguided men. Nothing happens in a vacuum. A man can only plant the seed. But it's the thoughts and emotions of the mother that shapes the child while she or he is still in the womb. So, whenever a society is short sighted spiritually and devalues a woman,that society will reap what it sows. Now, let's go down a rabbit hole. If you see the word "mason" you automatically think of men in secret societies. But let's unpack this word. Ma (mother) son. The son of a mother. The son becomes the sun. So you have a mother who is rasing a bright son. But how can she do this? Her thoughts must be pure (virgin). See, the key to changing this word for the better is in the hands (or shall I say womb) of the woman. And that's why the serpent has a vested interested in controlling and contaminating the minds of women. Once the minds of the women are free, organized religion will collapse. Let that sink in. ;-)

Well, Sanger was Irish-Catholic. She didn't get into eugenics until later. Originally she simply wanted to save women from the social pressure of having many babies. In the Catholic community it was expected even if the woman's health was risked. But people only focus on eugenics instead of the women's rights aspect of her ideology. As for Planned Parenthood, I can tell you that crime plunged here in NYC when we became the abortion capital of America.
