What REALLY sucks about tipping is that it is used as an EXCUSE to pay less than the minimum wage. Get rid of tipping and they have to pay their staff. Or do all the waiting themselves, which means they have to do all the work and still only serve a fraction of the people, gaining that much less revnnue for the same outlay. Tipping should be EXTRA, not instead.

Mark Hackett that's exactly right. That is how it's done in Canada. Wait persons or others get at least minimum wage, which isn't great, but better than in the US, then they get tips as extra.

Carys I just said *I agreed w/ your statement.* And the word is *not* more 'politically correct'. *It's accurate;* '1st, 2nd & 3rd world' were terminologies used during the cold war to denote, *capitalist countries, communist countries* & *countries who stayed neutral.* Those terms are completely irrelevant and outdated in the modern world. In fact, because Switzerland has historically stayed neutral during conflicts, several historians classified it as a 3rd world country... Does Switzerland seem like an *Undeveloped* or "3rd world Country (according to your definition of 3rd world)" to you?

I used to work in a hotel as a chambermaid. People would give a great tip to the guy who carried their bags and never saw them again but a terrible tip to me who cleaned up after them every day, unblocked their toilets etc and I had to share my tips, he didn’t. While tipping is nice if you are providing a good service it should never be necessary to make up your wages. A decent minimum wage is very important.

People don’t tip for them either 😂 I remember showing up for work one day to the hotel I worked at and being sent home because I couldn’t move my arm (I have EDS) I tried to tell them I could use my other arm but they were very annoyed and gave me the day off. Tips also negate the claim that the USA is cheap. It ain't cheap to eat out if it costs 20-30% on top of the bill. That brings it up to the rates in, for example, most of Europe, and not just the cheap countries, Germany and UK too. Meanwhile if you're relying on tips, your ability to loan for a mortgage and live that american dream of owning your own home is massively reduced because you can't include them in how much you can "safely" borrow.
@naomirmckay3368
@naomirmckay3368 6 жыл бұрын
Because they’re paid fck all and they rely on tips to get on. The service fee you see on your bill is actually split between all the employees and sometimes even management, so the people out front (who make less than minimum wage sometimes, bc their employers expect them to supplement their wage with tips) only end up making a couple cents off you. Unless you tip.
@markhackett2302
@markhackett2302 6 жыл бұрын
"Because they’re paid fck all " And WHY is that? ESPECIALLY since there's a minimum wage. Why, it's because they say "Well, since they get tips, they don't need a minimum wage, so please exempt wait staff from the same minimum wage!" isn't it. So IF tipping makes them get paid fck all, then we should not tip. The wage should be more than "fk all".

Mark Hackett, this is a case of chicken and egg, really. On one hand, there’s the argument that by not paying tips, employers will eventually be forced to raise wages. On the other, some would say that employers should raise wages before we stop tipping servers so that servers can at least keep their standard of living. Just because we stop tipping doesn’t mean the businesses will raise their wages; they’d only claim that it’s the servers’ poor customer service that led them not to make enough money and move on, firing anyone who lodges a complaint. It’s happened before, and it can happen again. For this reason, I don’t believe that your proposal is a viable solution. (A viable argument? Sure. But as a solution it fails to take into account the livelihoods of the people involved.) That said, however, I do agree with you that something’s gotta be done about the poor wages servers are given in the US. But I don’t think that encouraging people to essentially lower servers’ salaries is going to solve the problem. Tip if you want to tip, don’t if you don’t.

In America the customers are treated like cattle, or more appropriately cash cows. Get them in, serve them, get them out for space for another customer. I find the constant attention by servers in the US slightly annoying. I also remember once when sitting in café or diner having a cop of coffee, which I take with milk and sugar, having it topped off unasked. To my annoyance, the coffee cop was now full and not to my taste anymore. Nor did I actually want more than one cop of coffee. Sometimes it is nice just be allowed to be left on your on until you ask for service. As to friendliness, I think if you're American and used to the more outgoing American manner especially when it comes to service, European service can seem rather aloof and even rude by comparison. Not to say that there aren't rude people in service to be found.

If I order a $10.00 bottle of wine I'm expected to pay another $2.00 to the person who fetches it and if I order a $50 bottle I'm expected to pay them $10.00? What am I getting for my additional $8.00, do they recite poetry? dance and pirouette across the room? give me an impromptu shoulder massage? no? they do the exact same work so why the heck would they expect more? Sounds pretty well thought out to me. You're paying for a service. In this case it is a delivery service. Delivery is a fixed price, regardless of the value of the goods being delivered. Just because you can afford to pay more doesn't mean it costs more. By that logic bill gates should be paying $100 for a loaf of bread because he can afford it.

Tipping shouldnt be mandatory, in the rest of the world tipping works pretty much as intended, you reward the person that was assigned to service you, if they did a good job. The guy could slam the wine bottle on your table and toss a corkscrew, thats what you payed for. If the guy opens the bottle, pours you a bit of wine, and waits for you to test it and give the okay before serving the others, thats good service, you tip the guy. Where I'm from we pay better wages. Incorporating the tip into the bill at the end as a service charge is no better because it still means that the prices on the menu are not the prices you actually pay. Just add 10-20% to the price of everything, and only put that increased price on the menus. Then if you're in a country that has made tipping the norm, put something like this in the menu or somewhere else visible: "we pay well over minimum wage here, so tips are for *great* service, not merely adequate service."

I don't agree with government levies and taxes being added later either. In my country, no matter what I'm buying, if the price can be known beforehand then it is part of the listed price. Having lived in the US and Europe, there's good things about both places but I admit I prefer Europe. Tipping is just one aspect. While there are varying customs in the different countries in EU, in many tips are just included in the price. This therefore avoids the whole issue. If there's a problem with the service you can always complain, and if you feel you had extraordinarily good service you're free to give an extra tip as an extra thank you. But no one has to put up with being harassed just to get a tip. Personally, I prefer this system.

my Spanish teacher taught us in class when we travel to the south of Europe we must tip ( tipping is a new and not appreciated thing in Germany) because people there don't get a good wage. turns out her old info is outdated and since EU all people working legally get a decent minimum wage and insurance. So a simple rounding up to the next round number to make payment less of a hassle is good enough. In the US it becomes a crazy game of character assessment while guest and host tango uncomfortably over the cheque. My own system is if the waiter hasn't done anything really rude or nasty the get for 5 to 10 euros, no tip just leave the roundup money for 10 to 30 : 1 or 2 euros for 30 to 50 : 3 to 5 euros from 60 : 5 euro to 10% and nothing more... Tipping started during prohibition when restaurant owners couldn't pay much so they encouraged waiters to accept tips. Before that tipping was considered a form of bribery to get better treatment

Over here you only tip if the service was exceptionally good. But then again, we have decent minimum wages. When traveling abroad seeing a tip included in the bill actually pisses me off greatly...

At least in America, you know that tipping is expected and just go along with it. In Europe, it's a minefield. People don't know if tipping is expected or not, and as a result people often do so out of social conformity or to avoid feeling bad for not doing so. I'm in a situation where I know tipping makes no sense (for the same reason I don't tip doctors, nurses, air stewards or shop workers), yet I get a bad feeling if I don't tip. Therefore it's a no-win situation, as I resent tipping knowing there's no logic to it, but resent the social awkwardness of not tipping.

I'll never understand this practice. Why in the world shouldn't waiters just receive a fair hourly wage? Have people in the service industry plain forgotten how to call a union meeting? How is tipping not just organized begging exploited by restaurant owners so as not to have to pay their employees like everybody else?

Every time I think about going back to the US I remember tipping and look elsewhere. When you live without it, the hidden cost and awkward social obligation at the end of a meal or after someone, you didn't ask, touched your bags is very disturbing and feels like a shake down.

Just don't tip at all, and I'm not just saying that cause I'm in the UK and we general don't believe in tipping. Some places in London sneak it in and add it as a "service charge" which I've always argued again st it and refused to pay that extra bit that was added and wasn't part of our bill

It's insulting to tip in the Netherlands because it's saying the employer is awful and can't afford to pay his employees properly. Saying that I'm sure if you do it in a university city the student waiting your table is quite happy for it.

This has always seemed a completely bizarre concept to me. The whole point of hospitality is to make the customer comfortable - why inject anxiety about "appropriate' tipping into the exchange? Why not lessen service workers anxiety by guaranteeing a minimum wage for their work. Gratuities can always be welcome and directed to whomever the customer wants. Simple.

Tipping sucks. It's uncomfortable for both parties. For any restaurants out there, just pay your waiters more/a decent salary and increase the prices if you must. I think it's just an excuse for greedy employers to save a buck on paying their employees with the reasoning that they will make it back in tips... but that just sucks.

Totally incomprehensible to me. If anything, people in customer facing jobs should earn more than average because we all know what A-holes some people feel justified being to the people that are required to stand there and take it with a smile. Customer care, waitress, cashier - jobs where you get paid just enough not to quit to spend 8 hours fulfilling unreasonable demands and getting yelled at, mostly for things you didn't have any authority or influence over. Tipping should be something you give the waitress in addition to an actual working wage if you're satisfied with the performance, not part of the actual paycheck the person needs. That's like my boss paying me only half a paycheck and saying the other half comes from whatever money people throw into my hat when I'm begging outside during lunchbreak. If you don't do a good job begging or people don't feel generous today then that's your problem.

I live in London and I've been to seven or eight other European countries and tipping is pretty much ubiquitous. Personally I accept it as fact of life, if you don't like it stay at home. As an aside, not all Americans make grandiose claims about their country, and certainly no more than we Brits.
