On 23 June 1994, John Major's Government announced there would be no refit for HMY Britannia as the costs would be too great. After a long and successful career spanning 44 years and travelling over 1 million miles around the globe, it was announced that the last Royal Yacht was to be decommissioned.

The late Queen didn't own this along with the general misconception that the family own Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle etc, they belong to us the public, even the majority of cars are leasehold not owned by the family, Crown Jewels and many other things too long to list are not owned by the family, and they are our servants and the people who work for them are members of the household, members of the public are referred to as subjects, but they are here serving us not the other way around, which is another misconception

Britannia was retired on two counts one was shown on the video, the engines were very old and needed to be replaced and upgraded also a lot of the infrastructure was also worn out so a major refit was needed. The government decided it would be too expensive is the second count. There is no new Royal Yacht as the government could not justify the cost, the Royal Flights aircraft were also trimmed back. It was very rare for the Royals to travel on Britannia, the Yacht would deploy ahead of a visit and the Royals would usually fly out and meet it in port. Saying that short trips were made with them on board, like Caribbean island hops and port to port trips around the UK, Mediterranean and north America.

This ship was never OWNED by Queen Elizabeth II, It was a commissioned Royal Navy vessel and therefore crewed by Royal Navy personnel, while being owned and maintained by the nation through the budget for the Royal Navy. In peace time it was a floating diplomatic reception centre and in wartime it was to be used as a hospital ship. There have been 83 Royal Yachts since 1660. The main reasons for it's retirement was it's age (43 years is a lot for a ship) and the cost of refitting (a political decision). It was the second 'Royal Yacht Britannia' and (again due to cost) no replacement is being considered. During it's time in service it was also the only Royal Navy ship carrying the prefix HMY instead of HMS. There are also Royal trains, aeroplanes (English spelling) and helicopters frequently used by members of the Royal Family.

The Royal Yacht was retired because of that TURD Tony Blair (one of the worst Prime ministers ever) not wanting to support this rather Imperialist "Icon" (his view), not cost, it was only one ship in many and quite small. So please don't support the Cost Excuse.

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought it a bit odd that the money couldn't be scraped together to build a replacement Royal Yacht, but the same politicians thought it was perfectly OK to spend £20billion (up to June 2010) on involving the UK in the Invasion of Iraq and the occupation of Afghanistan, killing a lot of people in the process.

The Royal Yacht was used to evacuate people from Little Aden in 1986 but had to stay 12 miles off shore, outside territorial waters and 5 of its 6 motor launches were used to evacuate British and Commonwealth nationals aboard. Lieutenant Easson (Boatswain) had been awarded The Queen’s Commendation for Bravery in recognition of his hazardous work as HMY’s Beach Master during the Aden evacuation.

What Ben and David didn't mention is that during times of conflict, Britannia was meant to have been used as a hospital ship. However, she was not used during the Falklands war for political reasons. There are no other royal rachts in service, nor will there be due to the cost.
@skasteve6528
@skasteve6528 10 ай бұрын
Well they said it could be used as a hospital ship to justify the cost in postwar austerity. If that actually could be refitted for hospital use, it would take longer than the Falklands war lasted.

a few answers It was due for a refit in the 1990's and given the turbulent decade they went through The Government advised that they would not fit the bill. Both Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth II adored the yacht. It was used for most royal foreign trips in the period it was used. a famous time when it was used in 1995 for her South African visit post the first democratic election in 1994. its last trip was taken by His Majesty (as prince of Wales) in 1997 when we handed Hong Kong back to China, when he conducted the ceremony on his mother's behalf. Hope this is helpful

We had a tour and then went for a drink in the crews bar. It was a fantastic experience, A large crowd who had gone to see the ship wondered who we were as we came down the gang plank. I have a photograph. Somewhere of my family and I with the crew member on the yacht.

The ship was used for Royal diplomatic visits to other countries. Instead of staying in a residence of the country she visited, the Queen would retire to Britannia every night. The cost of refitting the ship was deemed too expensive by the Government, so Tony Blair decided to scrap Britannia. When the ship was officially decommissioned, Queen Elizabeth & Prince Philp attended the ceremony. It was the first time I saw Queen Elizabeth cry. Port is on the left hand side, facing the bow. When drinking port sitting at a table, the bottle is passed to the left as well. By the way, POSH stands for Port Out, Starboard Home, so first class passengers had the better view of the scenery.

You can remember that port = left because they both have the same number of letters. The port side is the left side when looking forwards to the front of the ship.

The video on the history of the royal yacht Britannia would be great to view with you, and hopefully would show some old footage. They would sometimes use the yacht to cruise along the Scottish coast during their holidays. I remember seeing some private cine film footage on a tv programme, and it showed the royals as children sliding down a chute onto the deck during one of their holidays. Queen Elizabeth would often fly out to a country on a State visit, and Britannia would have travelled ahead so that she could host a dinner on board during her visit.

The Land Rover in the video is either a Series I or Series II, you can tell by the position of the headlights, positioned in the grill. The later Series III had the headlights positioned in the wings and was introduced in 1971.

Ì lived in Edinburgh and had the pleasure of dining at a private corporate event on the Brittania with a private tour. What struck me from a design perspective was all the innovative secure storage spaces in very tight space in the kitchens, and the general simplicity of the furnishings, lots of calm colours and chintz chairs. That said, the dining table is really beautiful.

Port = 4 letters..... Left = also four letters, Port wine is also red so for navigation lights red is the left side of the vessel, green is on the right (or starboard)

If you're on a boat/plane facing forwards, port is to the left, starboard to the right. No idea in this video which way is which though.

I actually worked for a couple of seasons. We’re I worked. He told me, they had too walk around the boat with only socks on. So they didn’t make any noise walking about the ship. I was gob smacked , when this guy told us he’d worked on the Royal yacht. And yes, he did have the photos to prove it. He was a great Guy. ❤❤❤❤

Debbie, you had me really perplexed. When mentioning the Royal train and you said “If you could go either way?” It took me a while wondering how a Yacht was going to travel on land or a train on the ocean.

The Queen's sun lounge on Britannia looks like it has a boxing ring at the far end (!?!) Nothing made long journeys by sea a little more bearable than having demonstrations of pugilism that Her Maj could watch during the quieter, mid-ocean moments! 😄

The easy way to remember which is port and which is starboard is that port contains the same amount of letters as left and so starboard is obviously on the right. Helps us 'landlubbers' no end!!!

When I visited a few years ago, we were given a hand held device where you pressed the appropriate number displayed in that area to get a full description in your chosen language. I was able to move from section to section and was the only person there - no guides. I was able to stand in the reception where the Queen usually stood to greet guests as they entered. One of the Bars, frequented by Prince Philip was called " The Verge Inn"., By the door was small glass fronted box containing two Buttons from the Dress Uniform of Admiral Lord Nelson. The Sweet Shop was open, selling their own "Fudge". I don't remember a Landrover but there was a Vintage Rolls Royce on Board.

I've been lucky enough to see Queen Elizabeth II twice. Once when I was 15, in 1988 when she visited my home town, and again in 2000 when she visited the town where I was working to reveal a statue celebrating soldiers from WWII. Both times when I saw the Queen, she was only about 4-5ft in front of me, greeting the crowds. In 1988 she arrived in Torquay on the Royal Train, and disembarked with her husband Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh. They were both lovely!! Docked out in the bay was the Britannia!! The got into the royal car with the glass roof, and I remember running as fast as I could to be ahead of the car, so that I could see them again. Which was fairly easy as they were driving slowly. It was also so impressive to see the Britannia docked out in the bay, in my home town!!

Hi guys, as a merchant seaman, I can teach you the nautical terminology... The reason it is not left and right on a ship is very simple, If you were on the bridge of the ship talking via radio to someone else in the ship`you don't know what direction the guy is facing so left and right are pointless... So Port is always on the left when you are facing forward..... A easy way to remember is "There is no red port left" Red is the colour of the navigation light on the left and green on the right.. Also it was originally Larboard and Starboard but due to the early days of wireless communication they sounded the same via squeeky radio so Larboard was changed to Port... everyday is a school day....

You are wrong. Port and starboard are Scandinavian terms. they are derived from their vessels having a stearing board (starboard) on the right side of the vessel, to prevent damage to it when mooring, the left hand side was always pressented to the dock in port, ergo port side. it was in fact port and starboard long before radio was invented.

You are wrong.... I quote the maritime museam in London : In Old English, the term was ‘bæcbord’ (in modern German Backbord and French bâbord). This did not survive into medieval and later English, when ‘larboard’ was used - a term that possibly derived from ‘laddebord’, meaning ‘loading side’; the side rudder (‘steorbord’) on the right-hand side would be vulnerable to damage if it went alongside a quay, so early ships would have been loaded (‘laded’) with the left-hand side against the quay. However, from an early date, port was sometimes used in place of ‘larboard’, probably deriving from the loading port. However, it was only from the mid-19th century that the term was formalised. According to Admiral Smyth’s The Sailor’s Word Book, published in 1867, ‘the left side of the ship is called port, by Admiralty Order, in preference to larboard, as less mistakeable in sound for starboard.’ But I guess you know better than the Greenwich maritime museum... @@nigelleyland166

I served in the RN whilst the Brittania was still in service and docked close by our ship in Portsmouth. Talking to some of the crew one night, it was manned by the Royal Navy, they told us that the Stokers(ships plumbers) detached the the Queens toilet downpipe, a couple of decks below and caught one of her turds in a bucket and kept it in a jar. 😅
