The tradition on Christmas day in the U.K is to eat like you haven't eaten all year. There's a sense of pride when you have to unbutton your trousers at the table just so you can squeeze a bit more food in your ever expanding stomach. After dinner 90% of the U.K are sound asleep clutching their rather over full bellies. I'm pretty sure if you listen carefully you'll hear us all snoring from the USA 😂. Merry Christmas ladies, wishing you health and happiness for 2024

Perfect Christmas day UK. All the adults fast asleep after a gargantuan meal and the children and pets playing noisily. The leftovers are cooked up for several meals. Vegetables in the form of bubble and squeak ( patties made from mashed up vegetables and leftover stuffing). Great for breakfast with fried eggs. Cold meat suppers.

I was 12 years old when I first made a full christmas dinner for the family. My mother was quite ill and couldn't get out of bed. I said that I would do it and my brother and sisters started moaning about the forthcoming horrible dinner. By the time I had finished cooking, including homemade gravy, the siblings were almost tearful. When dinner was over, one of my sisters asked me if I would cook every Christmas. I've been in love with cooking ever since. And, yes, Christmas dinner over here is a case of cooking massive amounts of every vegetable you can spell, along with a turkey that was the size of John Candy when it was alive

For us, Christmas dinner is roast turkey, sage and onion stuffing, roast potatoes, honey and mustard glazed pigs in blankets, roast parsnips, roast carrots, Brussel sprouts fried with bacon, cranberry sauce and loads of really thick gravy. Dessert is Christmas pudding served with brandy butter and warm custard. My sister cooks it and it is always the culinary highlight of the year.

Bacon draped over a roast chicken or turkey is definitely a thing as it helps keep the meat moist and gives a bit of flavour. Picking the yummy crispy bacon off the top of the roast is a real treat in itself. Some do this for their roast chicken any time of year. I'd add that American style bacon is just perfect for this. Wishing everyone season's greetings from me in England xxx

Turkey crown roast wrapped in bacon helps keep it succulent. The sauce for leeks is a basic white sauce plain flour, butter, milk or cream salt ,pepper and nutmeg. Cook out the flour in the butter then gradually add milk(if you warm the milk it mixes easier, fewer lumps to beat out. Season to taste with salt pepper and nutmeg delicious.

Spot on. I prefer a cheese sauce on leeks, but nutmeg livens up a white sauce.I love bread sauce, flavoured with onion and cloves to go with turkey. Never have mashed potato, as I have mashed swede instead! Left over bacon from the turkey goes in my bubble and squeak.Merry Christmas all.

The most significant omission from the menu in this video was the traditional dessert, namely Christmas pudding. This is also known as plum pudding or (archaically) figgy pudding though it never contains plums and rarely contains figs: hence the line in the Christmas carol "Now bring us some figgy pudding". It is a boiled pudding made with suet, flour, dried fruit, spices, nuts and alcohol such as sherry, rum, whisky or brandy. It is usually steamed before serving and, just after being turned out of its dome-shaped container or bowl and brought to the table, it is often sprinkled with warmed up brandy and set alight! After the flames have died down, one's slice of the dark, rich pudding is covered with a hot sauce such as custard, brandy sauce or rum sauce. It can also be eaten instead with cold cream or even ice-cream. It is delicious but very filling. Christmas puddings, like Christmas cake, are often made weeks in advance of Christmas. Traditionally, they would be made on "Stir-up Sunday" (the 25th Sunday after Trinity at the end of November). All supermarkets stock them too in the weeks leading up to Christmas and magazines and newspapers review and rank them for taste and value. Homemade puddings would traditionally be made with coins inside though that is much less common now. Christmas pudding is not to be confused with mince pies which taste quite different and have a pastry case. Those are normally eaten as a snack rather than as part of a meal. Representations of Christmas puddings are often used as an icon for Christmas (e.g. decorations and on Christmas cards), their dark spherical or dome shape being surmounted with a sprig of holly.

Absolutely! It's not Christmas without a Christmas pudding which we usually make 6 weeks ahead and then feed it with alcohol. Also essential is a trifle, my favourite being a caramelised orange trifle, also made by me.

Our Christmas pudding recipe is over two hundred years old. It is a huge recipe and we have to can it. Wouldn’t be Christmas without it and of course the rum sauce. Yes, we cook many veggies and cheese sauce is a must. Another tradition is always roasted Brussels sprouts and bashed neeps.( turnip and carrot whipped together) The star is always the turkey with sausage and sage stuffing. Don’t forget the Christmas crackers!!

Leeks in Cheese Sauce are also worth the effort. Ingredients: - 4 leeks, cleaned and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter - 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour - 2 cups milk - 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese - Salt and pepper, to taste - 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional) - Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional) Instructions: 1. **Prepare the Leeks:** - Clean the leeks thoroughly as they may have sand or dirt between the layers. Trim off the root end and the tough dark green tops. - Slice the leeks into 1/2-inch rounds. 2. **Cook the Leeks:** - In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. - Add the sliced leeks to the skillet and sauté for 5-7 minutes or until they are tender. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Set aside. 3. **Make the Cheese Sauce:** - In a medium saucepan, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. - Stir in the flour to create a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly. - Gradually whisk in the milk to avoid lumps. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens. 4. **Add Cheese and Seasoning:** - Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth. - Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Adjust the seasonings to taste. 5. **Combine Leeks and Cheese Sauce:** - Add the sautéed leeks to the cheese sauce. Stir well to coat the leeks evenly with the cheese sauce. 6. **Serve:** - Transfer the leeks in cheese sauce to a serving dish. - Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. 7. **Enjoy:** - Serve the leeks in cheese sauce as a side dish with grilled chicken, fish, or as a delicious topping for baked potatoes. This recipe is a delightful way to enjoy the mild and sweet flavor of leeks combined with the richness of a cheese sauce. Adjust the seasonings and cheese quantity according to your taste preferences.

They did their leeks in white sauce. Cheese is nice but can overpower the leeks as leeks have a mild flavour. Well peppered white sauce is good, if you need cheese make it really mild.

Christmas dinner is most of what was in the video but Yorkshire puddings are not typical, possibly if you live in the north, nor is leeks with white sauce. Carrots have a honey glaze and we always cook red cabbage with apple. Sage and onion stuffing, sausage stuffing and bread sauce were also missing. Christmas pudding with brandy butter and brandy sauce are also the traditional pudding, sticky toffee is American. I am amazed that you consider that we have too much food on Christmas day. My experience of the US is that wherever you go the portions are gigantic for everything. My husband and I quickly learned to order one item and ask for two plates and share it. Even then sometimes we could not finish what was provided. I once ordered waffles and strawberries for breakfast expecting one or maybe two waffles and half a dozen strawberries. What I got was 12 waffles covered in strawberry sauce, 25 strawberries and a huge dollop of cream on the top. I couldn't eat half of it.

This looks like a pretty typical Brit Xmas roast I generally don’t have the leaks in sauce at Xmas but I do have them other times - the essentials are sprouts( I have mine cooked with tiny bits of bacon and chestnuts YUM) ,roast potatoes - parsnips ( roasted in goose fat ) yorkies - the turkey covered with streaky bacon for flavour and moisture- fresh cranberries and chestnut stuffing - gravy from turkey stock with English mustard mixed in - but otherwise very similar to what’s cooked here - p.s . Bubble + squeak is generally eaten for breakfast from leftovers. 🎅👍.

That really brought a tear to my eye because it reminded me of Christmas with my parents who are, very sadly, no longer with us. I miss those big family Christmases with the feast. You should also try the roasted parsnips, though. That’s quite a thing. And mashing carrots with swede (rutabaga in your part of the world!), heavy on the salt and pepper, is also a great accompaniment.

Am curious about all the casseroles! To me, and probably most people in the UK, a casserole is generally the centre piece of a meal, traditionally meat-based, with a cheaper tougher cut of meat cooked long and slow in a lidded pot the oven until it is tender , often with lots of onions and root veg. Yours sound like single-vegetable side dishes; are they also cooked in a closed pot in the oven?

Looks like a typical Christmas dinner to me too. It's meant to be a feast so the quantity and variety on the table is more than the usual family meal. Cranberry sauce makes an appearance on our table. In my experience, the roasted parsnips are the trickiest bit to get right. There are probably more variations on the pudding side of things but I like the traditional Christmas pudding with custard. Mince pies come later, in our house, when everyone's had a breather.

There is only two of us, so our Christmas dinner will be a roast duck, stuffing, onion bread sauce, gravy, roast potatoes, brussel sprouts, roasted parsnips, and glazed carrots. Followed by a four year old christmas pudding, with cream, and brandy butter. Mince pies later in the day. A crown roast of turkey is good for a small family, just cut off the legs and freeze them for another meal, and then criss cross bacon strips over the breast before roasting. For bread sauce, boil some onion in milk to flavour it, then add white bread and seasoning, it should be firm and spooned onto the plate. The giblets from the bird are used for the gravy.

My Mum did a lot of cooking like that. She was the best cook Ever! She was originally a farm girl and the second eldest of 9 brothers and sisters. Her elder sister worked on the farm and my Mum did the cooking. When she moved to the City, she worked in restaurants and for about the last 30 years or so, she was the cook. The only bad thing about her cooking was that it was so good my Dad didn’t like to go out to eat! Her cooking was always better to him. Of course, she would got tired of it sometimes and wanted to go out to eat occasionally! Christmas dinner is at my sister’s. She does the ham and turkey and everyone else brings the other dishes. We don’t have a big Christmas Eve anymore as my parents, both brothers and my eldest sister have all passed now. It was Huge when I was young though - Mum and Dad, 5 of us, plus some spouses, many children, etc. Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night!! 🇨🇦

Merry Christmas! That Christmas dinner looks lovely. In Britain, parsnips were eaten far more before the potato was brought over from the Americas. Parsnips contain quite a lot of natural sugars,, and when roasted, they become sticky and delicious. They have quite an aromatic, herby flavour. Have a great day tomorrow. 😀

My extended family has a big lunch together. It's madness and I love it with backyard cricket, swimming pool, cold meats and a whole lot of seafood. Most of my cousins are all in their 20s and get a bit rowdy in the afternoon after a few beers which is always fun. Working Christmas this year but I'll be glued to the couch watching the Sydney to Hobart and Cricket while deleting the leftovers all Boxing Day. Hope everyone has a great Christmas!

Roast Parsnips in Honey are lovely with roasts. Supermarkets also do them ready prepared, for convenience, along with most other Christmas accompaniments. Another thing that I didn't mention is those tall, deep filled, cold pies (generally game, pork and chicken, pork and bacon and similar) with some cheese if desired. I just had a quarter of one for lunch which is what reminded me!! 🙂

I think a big difference between the UK and the US regarding Christmas is that because the following day, Boxing Day 26th December is also a Bank (public) Holiday, most people in the UK can enjoy Christmas Day to the full food and drinkwise, as they haven't got to worry about work the next day.

Mashed carrot and mashed swede can be really special, if you mix both together, then add cooked sweetcorn, place it all in an oven dish, top it with sliced tomatoes, then bake for a few minutes until the tomatoes are cooked. the sweetcorn enhances the texture, and the tang of the tomatoes brings out all the flavours.

It’s utterly delicious!! 💚🧡🎄🎄🎄 My favourite is probably pigs in blankets followed closely by roast potatoes and bread sauce! Yum! We have Sunday roasts which has most of this every week. Parsnips are lovely roasted, they are a sweet vegetable. Carrots mashed with butter is a nice change from normal carrots. Roast potatoes with gravy are my favorite parts. Christmas dinner is like this, we don’t have the white sauce as this isn’t something we all like. Pigs in blankets are a must with Brussels sprouts. I will be working on Christmas Day, but look forward to my dinner ❤

Yorkshire pudding too of course, and a shedload of booze!
