From England here, it's fascinating seeing your reactions to this classic, it aired on public TV from 2008-2011 with two movies afterwards, like others have said it's a really accurate portrayal of teenage life in the UK. On the flip side are American teen movies like American pie accurate depecitions of American teenage life? I always wondered if it was really exaggerated for film or if it was actually what it's like over there.

The drinking age is 18, but underage drinking is nowhere near as looked down on as it is in the US, you can drink legally under the age of 18 at family/private events as long as you don't pay for it. I don't think any still exist where you can, but when I was 16 back in the late 90s our local Legion (Ex-Service men's club) could legally serve any alcohol to any full members of the club, and as you can join the British army at 16, you could also join the legion at 16. There were also some other local places where you could get served in your school uniform, but they were doing it illegally.

It's illegal to give alcohol to anyone under 5 (even gripe water, which in my youth often meant dipping the dummy in rum); between 16 and 18, if you're with someone over 18 and they're paying (well, at least settling the bill, you can't go to the bar and order for yourself), you can get beer, cider or wine with food.

The Inbetweeners really struck a chord with probably the Millennial generation, certainly anyone now in their 30s in the UK. It was relatable, everyone knew people like each of the characters and that’s what made it so funny, yes the silliness was dialled up to 11 but you could imagine the scenarios happening for real. I don’t know how it is standing the test of time, I can imagine younger generations not getting it. It was from a time where social media was still in its infancy and social interactions still took place in person.

A British pint is bigger than a US pint too, I don’t think Brits pick out ridiculous drinks for the first one in a pub before 18 on the whole. You need to get a Patreon for full uncut reactions One thing to bear in mind is that pubs aren’t the same as bars - you said it looks like a house, well pub is short for public house, historically it’s the shared community house to meet and drink. The culture around drink is very different, here we would meet up for a drink in a way Americans might meet for a coffee

When I was school all the way back in 1995 our leavers party for the end of school for 16 year olds was in a night club. It had been organised and paid for by the school. Well, we voted on where and we all paid £2 towards the price of hiring the club. Some teachers even came along and saw us all drinking. That's another exception "The private party" alcohol laws are blurry there, too. lol
