American Reacts to 2013 Santa Clara Vanguard (SCV!)

Today I am reacting to SCV 2013, my favorite and first show I watched before I started my journey to Drumcorps. Stick around and enjoy!

this was the first drum corps show I ever fell in love with. I took my son to Allentown in 2013 and after seeing this, I went up the hill and bought a Vangaurd t-shirt. I still have it. The next year, I signed him up for the Bluecoats' Blueway camp - he got to play parts of "Tilt" with them. The following year he marched with the Raiders in open class and for the next three years he marched with the Blue Stars. DCI is amazing. This show was amazing. Thanks for sharing.

I watched this show in Charlotte at Night Beat. They were the first corps to perform and I'll never forget the chills on that opening hit.

Also, in the "VAN" section, the color guard is to the right, so it's like a visual pun of VAN-guard.

The title of their corps is the Santa Clara vanguard and 4 min 17 seconds they’re spelling van with the horn line and the color guard next to them. Symbolizing “vanguard”

I remember watching this in Denton that year. Right down the road from my home in OKC. Really beautiful, in-your-face sound, which is characteristic of the California corps.

@6:10 "I love the symbolism of the show. The French Revolution" Just to clarify -- Les Miserables has nothing to do with the French Revolution. The French Revolution started with the events of 1787 and 1788 leading up to the storming of the Bastille in 1789, and it lasted until 1799 when Napoleon and his army overthre the Revolutionary government and created the French Consulate. Victor Hugo wrote Les Miserables around the unrest that followed the July Revolution of 1830 - and the death of General Jean Lamarque in 1832. They are very distinct periods of time in the history of France that occurred for very different reasons - events that surrounded the Napoleonic wars (1803-1815). The symbol at @13:08 (after the fluer-de-lis) is, if I'm not mistaken (if someone marched this show, please correct me if I'm wrong), is the Phrygian cap (or perhaps a shield) representing Marianne. She is a revered national symbol of France - representing liberty, equality, and fraternity. She represents the struggles in France starting with the French Revolution - throughout most of the Revolutionary period of France's history (including the July Revolution of 1830).

Great Show! This is one of my favorites as well. Check out Santa Clara's 1999 2h3n they tied for first place with Blue Devils. I've read that when they decided on the music they were not certain if the fans would understand or like the show. It is orchestral but one of the composers (Phillip Glass) is more modern classical . Frankly, I loved that show! This will tell my age but it was the 1975 Madison Scouts that got me into Drum Corps and still love it today. Even though it has evolved over time and was hard for me to get used to, The sound of all corps is so much more professional. I started playing Quads with a small town corps and actually ended my last 3 years with the corps who got me into it...Madison!

Cadets I believe in 1989 did a much ... much better show than this. I don't know who arranged this (because they stole parts from the Cadets) but also chopped the music up with stupid stops and needless percussive breaks. Between those an the usual DCI endings tagged onto every song, the songs are just butchered up. Cadets show had much more emotion and buildup to the war and then the closer.
