They said that Bob went backstage where security was holding Jarvis and Bob went in to get the story from Jarvis, just as a host of Jacksons high priced lawyers turned up and so Bob said sorry Jarvis, your on your own. --- It might have even been Cocker telling the story, as I said, I can't remember.

Jacksons performance in that brit wards, when he comes in like a superhero on a sort of platform on a crane was the most ludicrously tonedeaf behaviour iv ever seen on TV. What an absolute prick. And there's obviously a reason for the saviour of the children persona he was trying to use as a smoke-screen.

The reason for the laughter at the mention of "The South London Press" is that Bob is from Middlesbrough on the North East Coast and is 260 miles away from South East London. "The South London Press" is the largest-selling local newspaper in the Country and was my local paper for my first 29 years in London.

We shouldn't try to imitate each others' humour. British humour on TV is the tip of a giant iceberg that is born of millions of pub, workplace, school, and street exchanges that pass from generation to generation. We know it when we trip over it and we know when it is fake. Occasionally we cross paths either side of the Pond (there's some drowning somewhere in that clumsy metaphor); Bob Newhart is a prime example. A generation of British schoolchildren wet themselves listening to the BH vinyls. The passing of a genius.

OMG There WAS a US Version of Would I Lie To You? - it aired between April and July 2022. Not successfully I'm afraid. Shameless, The Office, Whose Line Is It Anyway and House Of Cards were good recent transfers from the UK to the US. Earlier transfers that seemed to have been successful include - Sanford And Son (originally Steptoes and Son), All In The Family (originally Till Death Us Do Part) and Threes Company (originally Man About The House) Abject failures include The Inbeweeners (cancelled after 1 season), Coupling (cancelled after 4 episodes, The IT Crowd (Pilot cancelled in 2008) and many many more!

The old S E London Community from my birth in 1954 to 1983 was fine but beginning to change, and not for the better so I bought this house in The S E London/Kent Suburbs,41 years ago,in 1983. The further I get from London in The South then the more friendly it gets. The Suburbs are friendlier than London and hen I visit East and West Sussex on Monday,it is "old school" British and most people on our walks will say "Hello" or "Good Morning/Afternoon"..

The thing to remember is that Rob Bryden, David Mitchell and Lee Mack are close friends in real life. David & Lee and wives often hang out together. So you have a natural dynamic to start off with. Add to that a quality comedian and story teller like Bob Mortimer and the rest of the panel hardly get a look in.

There is one British show that really worked in the US and ran for a while was "Whose Line was it Anyway" - it worked because they did not change anything apart from the presenter. The British show had also invited US and Canadian comics onto the show and the US version worked because they used these comics - comedians who had appeared on the British show and understood its aim and how it worked. Actually the US version is as funny as the original

There's a few more newer ones of Bob now, Boomy . . . the only 1 that I can remember now though was the Toaster one, so definitely more out there for you to see now . . . As for comedy switchovers from the UK to the US - we just do them differently to you. (They even tried to do WILTY over there, too!) - Again though, as is usually found, the wit, sarcastic side, dry humour, and the self-depreciation, is rarely there in US shows - and when that's missing it's hard for it to be of the same quality and content . . . US shows can have a team of perhaps up to 20 (or even more) writing for shows . . . Over here, it could be just 1 person, or maybe 3 at most who do it . . . the more you spread such work out between so many, so the consistency can fall . . . Stephen Fry did a good summation on the difference between US and UK comedy - have a look for it . . . we'll watch you react to it . . .

Re: 10:30 Not all US versions do the crash and burn, and it's not always because of "making it their own". Two examples: The US version of the IT Crowd. Richard Ayoade came over and played his part, and Joel McHale (who called Ayoade a "genius" and he's not wrong) took the other part. The entire season was, word for word and shot for shot, the exact same setup of the UK version. This failed because the IT Crowd (UK) is so specifically British that it didn't fit--at all--into the USA's setting. 2 successes: The Office, Queer As Folk.... Then you have Ghosts. I don't know if you and Queen Boomer have seen this, but if not, please, please do. You'd love it, I think. Now, this was also made into a US version that started out with the same premise as the UK version (and was produced by the Them There team, aka The Six Idiots) and had Mat guest star in an episode or two but was artfully adapted for the different audiences. So, for example, the older 80s Tory politician with no pants (because he died when he had a heart attack cheating on his wife) in the UK version became a younger frat-boy type with no pants in the US version; The Captain, a WW2 bloke in the UK version (wonderfully played by Ben Willbond) became a Civil War era northern soldier in the US version; the neolithic cave man in the UK version became a First Nations person in the US version. They have used _similar_ storylines but in all cases except one (the Scout Master with the arrow through his neck) not the exact same ones. This has worked beautifully, especially since the UK version had 5 seasons of 6 episodes and 3 Christmas specials and the US version has had (so far) 2 seasons of 22 episodes. They're both wonderful in their own way, and both specific to the setting, changed up just enough for the humour bones of the different audience. Exactly how The Office and Queer As Folk did, and both versions were successes in their own right. Please do look at the UK's Ghosts. You'll recognise some of the supporting actors, too, trust me (and yes, tis a comedy, done by the same mob as did Yonderland and Bill and harking back to some Pythonesque and Goodiesish humour, which makes sense, since the 6 Idiots all hale from Gen X and we grew up on that stuff).

Whose line is it anyway started off in Britain and I think the US version was more popular. I haven't watched the British version, but the US version is just about the funniest stuff I've seen from the US. And it works so well only because they absolutely nailed the casting; everybody from hosts, to the regulars and guests were pretty much perfect for the show. Now I've got to go binge watch some whose line.... again

The 2 problems you have in America is basically unless there is a cast iron profit in a program it gets canned and secondly many times you think you can improve the idea and just end up changing it so much that the original idea is no longer evident. Thus, when pilot episodes are made to showcase the idea to networks they just don't work so the public never sees them. This does not seem to happen so much in the UK where new ideas are more likely to be screened and thus a true and honest reaction to the program results allowing any ideas or criticisms to be incorporated in improving the program for the next season. This is the reason why many shows run for many seasons here is the UK.

I think WILTY works so well because we are a small Country with a smaller entertainment industry and most people on the show either know of or are familiar with heir fellow guests .No one takes it seriously and it's fun . The US. Version was a good attempt , but just wasn't as funny ..David , Lee and Rob have a lot of experience in making it fun for everyone . David's reactions to Bob's tales make them even better - he's a always on Lee's team .

I've not liked the American versions of The Goes Wrong Show from the few clips I've accidentally seen, hoping it was the British version. Wish someone would do their spoof American play "90 degrees", which is supposed to refer to the Tennesee heat, but there's supposedly been a mix up building the set with two of the rooms at 90 degrees to the main part of the set, so they have to sit at tables which are actually fixed to the walls instead of the floor, and walk along walls etc. I think it's hilarious as are most of their plays where everything goes wrong.

On the subject of British shows that the Americans butchered, there is actually an example of the opposite, an American show that the British messed up - Jeopardy! There was recently an attempt to do a UK Jeopardy! hosted by Stephen Fry and all the U.S. Jeopardy! watchers hated it and it was pretty much panned - I think I was the only person that actually enjoyed it. It was an hour long and had an extra board and so it wasn't as punchy as the U.S. version, and for people who don't know about the format the whole "give your answer in the form of a question" seems contrived, I guess. I dunno, I liked it, but apparently this wasn't the first time they've tried to do U.K. Jeopardy! and messed it up, but I know it's the most beloved U.S. quiz show, the "thinking man's TV quiz", if you will. Bob Mortimer wrote in his book about his experience as a solicitor in South London in the 70s-80s, he actually studied law at the same university my parents went to. The book is well worth a read if you're a fan of Mortimer, although it is quite bittersweet because it includes details of his triple bypass heart surgery, as well as some of the sadder stories from his childhood.
