I was working at the stage door of the Arts Theatre in Cambridge UK, Davee did a week of shows with us, and every evening we would chat, oh for 20 or 30 mins, in 11 years at the stage door, he was surprisingly the least judgemental, and certainly one of the most intelligent and insightful people , I ever met. so sad that he passed, but for his time, he was an extremely brave man too, when you consider what we have learned since, I still use his closing line, to honour his memory , goodnight, and may your god go with you. luv Jay Cambridge UK

Dave Allen is a legend. Religion often played a part in Dave Allen's act. He became an atheist and religious skeptic mainly because of his rigid Catholic schooling. Oh I loved Dave Allen and still watch him sometimes. Your story reminded me of a similar experience when we took my daughter to see John Barrowman. It was just after he'd been in Doctor Who and at just 12 years old she was a big fan of 'Captain Jack'. Well let's just say it's my belief Mr Barrowman had slightly misjudged his audience, it was Brighton after all and with him being gay and all, well you can imagine! Some of his jokes were very rude and my husband and I looked at each other over our daughter's head in slight horror! Thankfully he seemed to notice after a while that his audience were in fact mainly lot of older ladies and teenage girls and toned it down somewhat! It was a great show though and we saw him twice more after that, whenever he came to Brighton.

His sketches were great, but at the end of the show when he'd sit there in an impeccable three-piece suit with a cigarette, a glass of Irish whiskey and really take his time telling a story it was magic. No one would allow a comedian to take that much time on television today, but he was just so compelling to watch. And the punch-line was always worth the wait.

According to Dave he had a very strict father who hated "rude words" , however he did have an uncle that was far more broad minded, who happened to be a farmer. As a child Dave was visiting his uncle one day and was interested in watching his uncle milk the cows. Suddenly one of the cows very loudly "Passed gas" as you might say and his uncle just laughed and said "Oh did you hear that? the cow just farted!" Anyway, some time later young Dave and his dad were taking their dog for a walk and the dog did exactly what the cow at the farm had done and Dave quite innocently said "Ooh daddy, doggie farted!" Well his father flew into a livid rage and exclaimed "Where did you hear that?" to which Dave replied "It came out of the dog's bum!"

Thanks for reminding me what a brilliant raconteur Dave Allen was. His TV programmes were a treasured highlight of the schedules. One treasured memory was taking my (Irish) mum to see him in Cambridge. Centre of the front row was a great place to see him from..........

Dave Allen was one of the world's great _raconteurs_ he didn't just tell jokes; he *spun yarns* and did so engagingly. He used to tell lengthy horror stories that had a humorous ending and he'd tell them with every bit of gravity as one would tell a real horror story by the light of the fire. And he'd intersperse his story-jokes with brilliant skits. Would love a complete collection of his works.

@Christopher Horner You obviously had a sheltered upbringing, if you think you can get away with more now on tv than back in the 70s

It's amazing to see how much Dave Allen influenced comedians who came after him. Particularly visible in people like Dylan Moran but even Bill Hicks seems to have taken a lot from him.

I've loved watching Dave Allen since I first saw his BBC TV series Dave Allen at Large in the 70s, I even have his theme tune as my mobile ringtone.

Another comedian you may like. Victoria Wood. She does comedy songs such as "It would never have worked" and "Let's Do It" based on a British satire of relationships. I think you'll really laugh at them

Amanda, thank you for showing that clip of the late great Dave Allen. I remember seeing him many years ago, he was one the greatest comedians wehave ever had. Seeing him now twenty or thirty years later and he still makes me laugh, timeless. Regards from 🇳🇿

I can relate to this scenario having gone to a private catholic school run by IRISH nuns, they were exactly the same as Dave portrays them. Never forgot the fire and brimstone look I got for daring to mention that my Aunt took me to the cinema to see the current movie blockbuster of the day, the rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar !!!
