I also think that this refers to the current discussion that facial recognition software should now be increasingly used, as it led to the identification of the now retired RAF terrorist Daniela Klette. So on the one hand, today's senior citizens who were RAF terrorists can no longer be sure. On the other hand, it is known that many innocent people are and have been suspected as a result of the AI application

The thing with the GSG9 and the pensioners is up to the RAF. A little context: The GSG9 is the anti-terror unit of the Federal Police and was founded after the hostage situation and the disastrous rescue attempts at the Munich Olympic Games. The 1970s were a decade of terror in Germany by the Red Army Faction RAF, a left-wing terrorist group. The first mission in which the GSG9 became known was the hijacking of the Lufthansa aircraft "Landshut", which had the aim of getting RAF terrorists out of prison. The GSG9 tracked the plane to Mogadishu in Somalia and stormed the plane there. The hostage takers were either killed or captured while all the hostages survived. The RAF is divided into several "generations" and the third generation was active from the 1970s to the 1990s and repeatedly carried out terrorist attacks. Of course, you can't just go on living as a terrorist unmolested and so many went underground, got other identities and some also lived in the GDR and were then arrested after reunification. But some, even if they have not carried out any terrorist attacks for several decades, are still undetected today. Now they're older, but at the same time they can't do a normal job (because they're wanted terrorists). They have to live on something somehow. That's why some of them robbed banks and showed the investigating authorities that they were still there. They are now of retirement age but are still wanted criminals. A few weeks ago the police were able to arrest “Daniela Klette”. And a lot of traces were found in her apartment that point to the other wanted terrorists. The police are now working on this little by little and the police are continually targeting pensioners who look similar to the terrorists they are looking for. Because the terrorists today are also old people who would also be pensioners if they had decided on a normal life.

In Germany it's extremely uncommon for packages to be left on the porch due to the obvious liability issues. If the recipient isn't home, it may be given to a neighbor and a note is tossed into their mailbox or, if that isn't possible either, it's taken to a nearby package station, where the recipient can pick it up.

If you are not at home, the letter carrier takes the parcel back and you get a note in your letterbox telling you that you can collect the parcel from the nearest post office. However, this is not done for every parcel, it depends on the value of the parcel and the deliverer. Amazon parcels, for example, are often simply dropped in the carport without the doorbell even being rung. In the meme, the poster complains that the letter carrier never rang his doorbell and that he only received a letter in his mailbox telling him to pick up the parcel at the post office.

Also worth mentioning a Packetshop is a small grocery store or Kiosk, that accepts packages from various packet delivery services and you usually can find your package there if you weren‘t home when the mail man ringed the bell … or simply was to lazy, because you live at the 5th floor. the full translation for "toilet seat" is "klobrille", it is just slang-like to leave "klo" out but creates confusion for the non-native speaker. and the joke is that instead of people who pee while standing using the urinals, they rather use the normal toilet - while standing!!! - and lift the toilet seat up. which is funny because they could just pee into the urinal without needing to get "their hands dirty" or do extra effort. while at the same time they may spray around the toilet area where other people would like to sit comfortably.

Ryan, what keeps you from travelling to Germany? You would rather not travel with your little boy yet, until he's a bit older? If it's the travel budget: The US is a lot pricier, at least in the cities I visited (Minneapolis, Miami, Houston). E.g. ordering food on DoorDash/Uber Eats was triple the price I would pay for Lieferando over here + the compulsory tip.

The summer thingie. In germany its a thing to just not care about heat and weather etc. Its first really summer when its hot and it has to be that hot so it is summer. And then the thing there is no bad weather just bad clothing (or preparations)

Instead of packages being stolen, after randomly being dropped on your porch, in germany they take it to a packstation or a store nearby. with packstation you get a QR code on your phone, scann it at the packstation (a huge yellow block, with many different sized doors, kinda like a po box), door opens and you got it. works great. MontanaBlack was in "the news", cause he had something going with a 17 y old supposedly

The Showers-Württemberg joke explained: Baden-Württemberg is one of the 16 federal states of Germany. Württemberg is one part of the state, Baden is another part. “Baden” means “bathing”. The reason for this is that there is a famous spa town called “Baden-Baden”. So the joke is that the federal state is renamed “Duschen-Württemberg“ because they discovered showers.

When visiting Germany I recommend staying in nice little villages and get food and drinks there. It is much cheaper there than in the cities. At a restaurant in my village you can get a great rump steak with fries and a side salad for just 27 EUR. Additionally the country side scenery is better 😀

Ok, so who is claiming that this is a super hot summer!? It is rather cool and rainy. We didn't even have temperatures over 32 Degree on a single day this year? If anything is bad this year it's the humidity level, even with below 30 Degree it feels unbearable because you feel like breathing under water!

a friend here in germany married a mexican woman who now lives here. She finds it hard to cope with the temperatures here because she is so used to air conditioning, while for him it's not an issue at all at 25°C. On the other hand, her family sits there with jackets in the apartment at an average of 14°C (it can drop lower for some days) in winter because there is no heating.

10:42 This refers to the federal state BADEN-Württemberg. Baden can be translated as bathing. The next breakthrough after Duschen-Württemberg would then be Waschen-Württemberg. I hope they don't go to far and end up with Stinken-Württemberg. At least for the town Baden-Baden the translation "Bathing-Bathing" is correct because its old Latin name Aquae refered to the local hot springs and the many bath houses which made use of them. How the rest of the region got it's name? ... Well, for a long time they were a duchy ruled by the Baden family which had their residence at castle Hohenbaden near the town of Baden-Baden - which then was only named Baden, the second Baden was added so it's clear that you mean the town "Baden in the Baden region" and not another town named Baden somewhere else, like in Switzerland. Also Baden-Baden is a Kurort (spa or health resort) and many of those towns have a "Bad" in front of the name. So it could be 'Bad Baden-Baden'. 😅 Long nonsense short: As far as I understand it the federal state got it's name from a former kingdom - Württemberg - and a duchy - Baden - which got it's name from the duke whose family got it from the fact they come from a town with many bath houses.

11:10 Baden-Württemberg is the reference. Baden meaning to bathe if outside of a city name context. 12:25 the translation is so off, because "Die Brille" is literally glasses. In germany, you call the toilet seat a "Klobrille" toilet glasses. So you need context to know that "Brille" here referes to the one on the toilet. A normal translator does not use context but simply takes the words and translates them, AI does use context and thus has the better translation.

The Württemberg thing is fairly simple: The region Württemberg is part of the Bundesland (federal state) Baden-Württemberg. Baden is the name of a region next to Württemberg, but the word also means "to bathe". So then the joke is replacing bathing with showering.
