I made one experience so far with a multicar. I was working with a colleague on a wind-turbine in north-eastern Germany once and after we finished work we noticed that there was a massive amount of snow coming down while we were working. We tried to make our way out but got stuck pretty soon in our VW Caddy. We called a local guy who came with his 4WD, i think it was a Suzuki or Mitsubishi to tear us out there, but he also got stuck not much further than we got before. Then he called a guy from the nearby village and he came with a Multicar equipped with a plow. That Multicar got hooked up in front of the Car that was trying to get us out and we were still hooked up behind this one. The Multicar pulled us out there both together while also plowing the road - i was really impressed by this little beast...

Yup. The Multicar is the east german 1/4 as expensive version of the Unimog. Quite a bit less capable than that, but still way more capable than civilian vehicles and a lot of other commercially used ones. And as said quite a bit cheaper.

@@ArschvomDienst And if there is a small Italian village-no Unimog will fit (Maybe the very old small ones). But the Multicar might have a chance to get in such places...and do its job. Yes the Unimog is much more capable -but you need to get where you want to work first ;-) So for its Niche, the Multicar is brilliant. A denser wood..multicar. Open Terrain - Unimog. Or the Austrian Pinzgauer-I would like to see a comparison. They are supposed to be better than the Unimog.

@@RealMash Not possible - Unimog exist in different sizes. The smallest version of the Unimog is small enough to drive on the sidewalk.... Ian only showed on his channel the mid-heavy and the heavy versions. Only today like the Multicar the small Unimog (UX100) isn't owned anymore by Mercedes, it is now owned by Hako and Hako sells since 1998 Multicar and Unimog UX100 predecessors first under the name Kommobil, then Hakomobil and now they are called Hako Citymaster or Hako Citytrac. Multicar is the only East-German car brand that did survive because after Reunification there was no equivalent in West-ermany , so it could survive on its niche and even find many customers in the West who quickly saw its capabilities, especially public service apreciated the quite small but for its size very strong car that litteraly could do everything, be it a snow plow, a street sweeper or whatever you need. And it has a very tiny turning radius. Even Bundeswehr adopted it in the early 2000s as Mungo (heavily modified by KMW) because they saw its potential as a little truck that can be loaded inside a helicopter (and outside as well) - although it wasn't that successful in this role (too cramped inside, too little armour protection against mines and bullets).

The only east german motor vehicle company to survive reunification. Those tiny trucks are quite popular with city service offices, collecting trash in narrow old town alleys, caring for city parks (which may have narrow walkways) and other stuff like that. I never would have thought to compare them to a Unimog though! 😅 But they do come with a huge variety of configurations.

The 4 wheel drive versions sit on an older generation (licenced by benz) shortend and narrowed unimog drivetrains. So in fact the modern day Multicars are basicly Baby-unimogs. The pre reunification models share nothing but the cabin and the name with those, tho.

I am from northern Germany (Mecklenburg Vorpommern) and my village has its own Multicar that is used for many stuff. They often transport equipment for the village community workers or transports cut grass and all kinds of stuff. In Winter it’s used for plowing snow on parking lots or the sidewalks. They’re reliable, efficient, small off road capable and have a big capacity for their size. Someone even owns one privately which runs for over 20 years without any problems.

Current Multicars - as shown in the video are closer to unimog (in original intention: UNIversal MOtor Gerät - Universal Engine Device) than most of the current Unimogs due to their flexibility of connect able tools, their hydraulic system , the 4 wheel drive & gearboxes with up do 10 gears. This comes along with modern engines from VW & Iveco, backed by the financial Power of multicar's owner Hako. But it's true that the idea of a small, versatile vehicle survived as well as the production location from GDR times...

Before it was named Multicar it had a different name that was conflicting with another brand or something in that direction. So I believe it was that under the employees that the question was asked to put in a new name. So in the end the non-English speaking communist lead company decided on the English sounding Multicar. I believe it was this decision that saved them when reunification happened. There is a German documentary where this is explained. Edit: This one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooacoGyKpbiZatE The auto translation subtitles in English are OK enough to watch. Reallu nice docu.

The name was Dieselkarre (abbreviated DK, diesel cart). It was better known as Dieselameise (diesel ant), but that was never the official name. It already got renamed to Multicar in 1959. The first versions didn't even have a cab, just an open place to stand in front of the flatbed, and the steering on the side, and the car was totally open in the front (which was quite prone to accidents).

But those could only carry 250kg. in the front. Those mini trucks can probobly carry at least one ton, probobly a bit more. They also of cause have weather protection as well as the capacity to clear bikelane snow, that always was something that use to be very tricky I was just curious. And i found some that a municipality was selling. Its even smaller than the one in the video. In many ways this is the better UNIMOG. They are less expensive . In many cases the MOG is overkill and overpriced. I live in the Netherlands and we saw the first ones around the beginning of the 80ties, They did work in the cities like for the gardners or with a small snowplough. They were not popular with the drivers, but I think it was more like an image thing. "Bweh, GDR sh*t" They did their job, easy access, tight turning circle. tipper . The MOG always had a reputation for being indestructable, but that is also a drivers thing.

The German army tried the military version in afghanistan but it got some issues with the very hard terrain there. The idea was a light truck that could change Mission modules in an hour or so. From krane to transport etc

The MiltiCar istn't half of cool as the video is trying to suggest... ;o) The roots aren't offroad at all. The first ones are made as mini Mini-Trucks. Kinda private property, small farm, factory area... Do you know the Piaggio Ape? Or have you seen the small, electric, china trucks? Golf car sized mini trucks? It was meant to be like this, originally. The MultiCars came from East Germany, but they evolved pretty far into a kinda multi purpose urban truck. They are made to go to very small areas. They are not supposed to go anywhere, but to places like into small yards, inside workshops, halls, onto board walks for cleaning... stuff like that. To be ready for competition, they nowadays added stuff like 4x4, heavy hydraulic systems and PTO. But, unlike the UniMog, these are bonuses, they are not core of the originale mindset!. :-) Greetings from Germany, Pete. edit: perfect example for a MultiCar job: park maintenance! Why didn't I came up with this idea in the first place? :o)

The Multicar has a 2t carry capacity so it's a pretty capable truck.
Жыл бұрын
My father used to drive one of those back in 1980's. He said that 2t capacity was just a number. In reality he swore it could carry over 3t easily. 😀

@ The 2t capacity is for the registration so you don't need a truck licence for it :D
