Test Cricket is great - it is like a game of chess with all the subtle tactics used. The One Day game was developed in the 1970's for International cricket, but has been played forever by school teams and local sports teams. The 20/20 seems very exciting to many, but I find it bastardised by the amount of money involved and the cheating in that form has been more than in any other [like too many modern day, really high paid sports]. It comes down to personal preference and I always love a 5 day Test Match - especially an "Ashes Game". The Ashes is a specific Test tournament between Australia and England and has been hotly contested since 1882. It is played every 2 years and 2023 is the next Series. Australia currently holds "The Ashes".

Agree. I do prefer one day cricket, but you're right about test cricket, it's like chess and I like it as well. I never became a fan of 20/20 because it takes a lot of the tactical side out of the game, it becomes even more of a batters game, it's the smash and grab version of cricket.

@Dragon Ball fans can't read I said that the cheating is more than in any other form - try and get it right if you are going to criticize - not like there has never been cheating in all forms and all sports - get a grip - and Tests are just better in my opinion - form your own - no skin off my nose - ignore what I say - have a go - who cares it is my opinion - everyone has one - don't get bent over it.

Haha as a kid I loved Test Match Cricket and would not miss a ball for the full 5 days! T20 is probably the most action and fastest paced for a beginner but for me it's Test Match Cricket, I compare it to a game of Chess, so much strategy is required...nothing beats investing 5 days into a game then the result comes down to the last ball! Ofc many games end without a result and that doesn't bother me at all....it's just cricket!

@@CVTECK1 What generally happens is that the team that bats first tries to bat for the first 1.5-2 days if possible. Then they try to bowl out the other side (roles swap). Both sides bat and bowl twice, and a Test can (most of the time) be played to a definitive result within 5 days, sometimes 4 days, or more rarely, 3 days.

Test cricket is the purest form of cricket. It takes five days because the skill level, concentration and stamina are at the highest level. A good game of cricket It is like reading a classic book, it has plot, turns, drama, heroes and villains. To watch a game through and have your side win is one of the most satisfying feelings ever. The truth be told very few people get the chance to watch the whole game but you keep up with the score and highlights of the game and get more engrossed as it gets closer to the end. When you fully understand the game nothing satisfies like test cricket. The other two forms of the game were designed for marketing the game. First came one day cricket in the late '60's. It made the game hugely popular with a new set of viewers. The game is more managed by the rules and controlled for a result but has lots of entertaining moments. It was so successful that 4o years later when they were trying to capture the next generation the came up with T20, the three hour game. A lot of fun but it is so contrived for a quick result it is hard to take seriously.

Test Cricket is the greatest. Its not often something you watch for 5 days...its more something that happens that you keep up with the score every few hours...it builds to a crescendo on day 3,4 or 5. The reason IMO it is so good is because of the subtle variations in conditions and how difficult that makes it to bat. The age of the ball, the overhead conditions and the pitch change as the game progresses. This means you can have a team that look way out in front, but if the conditions change you could be 300-3 and lose you next 7 wickets for 20 runs. Look at some of the New Zealand v England games from summer of 2022...you'll see what I mean!

The guy with the ball is called the bowler, and the action is called bowling. Originally the bowler would bowl eight balls, now they only bowl six balls; this is called an over. A team will have several bowlers, some are pace bowlers; others are spin bowlers and medium pace. Bowlers alternate overs.

Test cricket, which takes a maximum of 5 days to complete, is an international game. Usually, there are 5 test matches played to complete a test series. Each test match is played in a different city in the host country. There was a time when there was no 5-day limit on matches. The test match would continue until a result was achieved. A famous match in South Africa went on for 11 days. The visiting English team had to hurry to the port as soon as the match was over, so they did not miss their ship home to England. Because of the 5-day limit, there sometimes occurs a situation when no result is achieved, because they run out of time. That's called a draw. The test series form of cricket is older than the 2 other forms. An Australian team traveled to England to play the very first test match in1877. Australia won that match. In 1977, they played the centenary test, this time in Australia. Australia won again, and by exactly the same number of runs (44). England will have to win the next 2 centenary matches to draw level, then go on to win the next centenary match after that to go into the lead. That will take 3 hundred years. Ha Ha! In the meantime, we will be enjoying countless test series, as well as the other forms of cricket too.

Test cricket is the best form of the game in my opinion. T20 is great fun to play and watch when you're learning the game as it is fast and exciting. But once you have a really good understanding of the nuances, strategies and the individual skills battles taking place, you'll want to get rid of the limits that the shorter forms of the game put on them, so they can play out properly. Test cricket is much more strategic and intricate.

To let you know, the "toss" isn't to decide if you bat first. It is to determine whether the sides/tams captain wants to bat or bowl first. Also there is a limit to overs in a Test Match. The normal expected overs per day ios 90 depending on stoppages for bad wather i/e Rain and bad lighting. The inifinite overs is a wrong answer

Test Cricket (5 day cricket) where they wearing white uniforms, is the traditional format. Most fans would not watch the entire game. It is usually on TV all day so you might watch an hour or two a day and just watch the highlights reel of the days play later. In the 1970s ODI cricket started (50 overs per team). Wearing different coloured uniforms. This type of cricket was seen as more exciting as both teams only had 1 innings and the batsmen would try to hit more 4s & 6s as they only had 50 overs (300 balls) to get their highest total. This format of cricket started controversially but is now widely accepted. T20 cricket (20overs per team) started around late 1990s. India has the biggest Comp called the IPL. As both teams have only 120 balls to score their total, the batters start trying to hit 6s from the opening ball. So much more action in a short amount of time. However critics call this format hit & giggle cricket which relies a lot on luck. I'd suggest to start with watching a ODI match as the batters do have to protect themselves from getting out as well as scoring quick runs.

There are great levellers in Cricket. Home ground advantages and Host Country advantages and they are all to do with Temperature, Humidity, and Pitch condition. Along with soil mix and adequate ground preparation. For instance , how green the grass is, how much grass cover is actually present. Boot marks and and cracks, called checking of particularly hard dry ground. All of which affect the way the ball behaves. A Ball can be bowled as fast as one hundred miles an our,( 160kmh). The winner of the coin toss, theoretically has an advantage because he can choose to either Field or Bat 1st in the game, all depending on the opposition you face, The ground conditions and weather and time of commencement of the first innings. Some matches are day and into evening starting around 4pm. even some night fixtures starting from 7pm on. So lots of different options and strategies come into play.

Test Match Cricket really is the only form of the game that matters. everything else is sparklers and tin foil. I'm not saying that isn't important to the game. That represents revenue and revenue is what is required to turn the cogs. But, when it comes down to intensity and one persons will over another, Test Cricket is where it is at. I notice myself, t20! "yeah yeah, another t20 match, miss this one and tune into the one tomorrow and I don't feel like I have missed a thing. The same with One Day, to an extent. But Test match Cricket is entirely different, it is more about the contest of one mans will over the other or one teams combined will over the other, than it is about anything else. And it is so intense that men go into mental melt down during the course of a series, and some times never recover, and if they do, it is usually with the help of some sports psychologist. This is where the game is at its' most intense. In the 90's when Shane Warne was in action, and the English day was happening during the australian night. I would drive home from work in the dark, and the game would have already started in England. I would be driving home with the radio tuned into the test match, listening to the english commentators, who were the best commentators, describing the game as it unfolded, and they would describe the game as meandering, and then Shane Warne would come on to bowl, and they would describe it as " only two minutes ago this pitch was dull and lifeless, and Shane Warne has come on and all of a sudden the english batsmen are looking at each delivery as if the ball is going to land on a mine". And, it was so good, and so intense, as soon as I arrived home from work, I would sit down with my sons, who were already watching, and be riveted to the action as it unfolded. And that is what test cricket is like, every day a new adventure, every day a new drama. and, at the end of the test you may or may not have a winner, but that does not really matter. because the only thing that really matters in test match is who wins the series, and only one test needs to be won to establish that. During the course of a series many men will suffer from either melt down or injury, and only the very toughest mentally and physically will survive either. Just look at the most recent series between australia and india for an example. The indian team that took the field for the first test of that series, did not resemble the indian team that took the field for the fifth test in just about any way. Only the really tough indians mentally stood up in the end, and they won the series against all odds, and they showed themselves to be magnificent champions. They achieved more in that series than they would have by winning a thousand limited overs tournaments. sorry to rave on, but this came from the heart.

To get the ball past the batter, the bowler can get the ball to swerve in the air ("swing"), or move off the surface ("seam movement", or "spin" if it's a slower bowler). A fast bowler has limited licence to bounce the ball at the batter's head to unsettle them and force a mistake. The field placements can change dozens of times in the innings, to make things harder for the batter.

The rule for LBW actually is if it would have removed the bails. If the stumps are hit but the bails fail to dislodge, the batsman is not out. I have seen where centre stump is completely removed, but the bails remained through supporting each other; this is quite rare but can happen.

Lots of love being shown for test cricket here! It's also my favourite form of the game. I love how it ebbs and flows over the 5 days (and even better, over a test series lasting several weeks). However, it's also the form most at risk. It's a tough game (hence why it's called a test), and I think younger players aren't as attracted to it. A batter can now specialise in being a big hitter, and make lots of $$$ travelling the world to the different T20 leagues. It's more glamorous and exciting. They'll earn more there than they would in learning how to become an opening batsman for test cricket. I think it puts the test form in danger. It's meant to be the pinnacle of the sport, and that means it needs to attract the best. I might be totally wrong, but I'm not sure it'll exist in its current form in 20 years. Maybe we'll see two scraped together teams still playing for the Ashes. But that'll be more like an exhibition game.

Watch all three types so that you can learn the different tactics and skills used in each type. To the uninitiated, the 5 day game can seem boring but when you understand the manoeuvring involved in the bowler trying to get a batsman out and the batsman trying to get on top of the bowler then it becomes like a game of chess and you begin to appreciate the thought processes going on as well as the technical skills and tactics.

It isn't "pitching or throwing;" it is 'bowling.' When throwing a ball you start with a bent arm which straightens sharply in the final stage to impart power; that is illegal for a bowler to do that. He or she must start with a 'straight arm that stays straight throughout' OR start with a 'bent arm that stays bent throughout'. If you refer to a bowler's action as 'throwing' that is highly offensive and will not be taken kindly. Additionally bowlers are not always aiming to hit the wicket; there are other ways of getting batsmen out; for instance, far more players get out caught than ever get out by having the ball hit their wicket. Bowlers' tactics depend on the conditions and situation in a game.

Generally the Test match or game is played for about 6 to 8 hours each day for 5 days. Sometimes at the end of that time the match can be called off as a draw if neither side has been completely bowled out. There have been instances over the 100+ years of test cricket where matches have been completed in less than the 5 days... even as little as 2 days. The number of hours of play in a day depends on the weather - rain or fog causes stoppage of play and time lost - and the availability of sunlight. In recent years they have also experimented with playing the test match at night, under artificial lights, but this is-yet to become standardized. There have also been a few instances with matches ended up tied - in which all four innings are considered complete and the run totals of the two teams are exactly equal.

It`s best tom start with T20, then One-Day cricket before you take on Test Cricket. Each one shows a further step-up of tension so when you know the Laws of the game, then you can work out for yourself which outcomes are likely. Don`t forget, the fortunes of the game can turn on one 6-ball over or one dramatic effort by a batter, who scores at more thanone run per ball. Although it hardly ever happens, a batter can score 36 runs off one over, but if the fileding side then take 3 wickets in one over, the whole outlook is changed.

In T20, the batter will take more risks, because the game is so short. In test cricket, your life, your wicket, is more important, you have to survive. So you take less risks and accumulate runs slower. My fav is one day: all the raz of T20, but the bowlers can take more risks, the stats are more interesting AND IT CAN STILL COME DOWN TO THE LAST BALL OF THE GAME!

In cricket they are called bowlers. You have pace bowlers and spin bowlers. They don't throw - the arm has to be straight. Of course, fielders throw when retrieving the ball. The late great Shane Warne bowled some of the best spin you will see. Fast bowlers are on another level. A cricket ball is solid - not soft like a baseball. It's wrapped in leather and has a seam which impacts how it swings and spins. Hahaha ...had to laugh when you said "A whole day!" ... at one time that was the shortest form of cricket before they introduced the 20 over games. Cricket is played domestically and internationally and squads differ depending on the type of game. At the national level, a test team would not necessarily be the same team as a One Day International (ODI) or T20, but is likely to have a lot of the same players.

I'm a bit late to this party but in response to "Which version do you watch?" ... I will watch any of them in a pinch but generally I'd much prefer to watch a session of test cricket than a 20 over session of t20. You don't get to see a bowler work a batsman out if they only get 4 overs and the batsman is throwing the bat. In a test you can see a good bowler build tension over a series of balls and maneuver a batsman into getting out. You don't get to see a batsman craft an innings if he's trying to knock the cover off the ball. T20 can be exciting in the way that explosions are exciting -- but after you've seen one Michael Bay film, you've pretty much seen them all, they get kind of samey. T20 requires a style of play that loses the skills that are the highlight of the game. I particularly hate to see bowlers having to bowl two feet outside off stump in T20 when they're perfectly capable of bowling just outside off stump just short of a length and exploiting variation. I'd much rather watch that highly skilled play.

All forms of cricket are good and all are subtlely different. A five day test match rarely takes the full five days to complete. The best way to learn about the game is to watch it on TV or listen to the radio commentary while you are doing something else. One thing this video does not venture into is the fielding positions which has a unique terminology all of its own. You'll only really get this by watching/listening to the game. There is another form of cricket that is even shorter than 20/20 that you will definitely come across on Sky Sports. It's called "The Hundred". As the name suggests, an innings is restricted to 100 legal balls (deliveries) per team. Bowlers can only bowl a maximum of 20 balls and they do this in sets of 5 balls (not the standard 6 balls per over). Otherwise, the rules are similar to 20/20 cricket. The game also uses a plethora of technology to assist the umpires. There is a third umpire in the stands to whom decisions can be referred, either by the on-field umpires (unlimited) or by the players (limited). He/she is in control of the technology and also determines whether the no-ball rule has been violated. The technology consists of slow motion replays, Hawkeye ball tracking and ultra-edge sonic technology. There are also cameras embedded in the stumps.

T20 is your best bet for a quick entertaining format of the game. ODI's are for seasoned spectators and International Tests are for vets. Pure endurance. "If you can't keep up don't step up." But yeah, T20 is still relatively new. Many spectators go more for the partying and less for the game. A competition recently ended about a week ago here in the Caribbean and it was pure enjoyment. But like I tell Americans who are interested, the best way to learn is to gather your friends, head for an open field and play!

A test match lasting five days isnt anywhere near as bad as it might sound! Each "day" of play usually starts at 11.00 am, goes on to around 1.30pm, when they have a 45 minute break for lunch, play resumes after lunch until around 4.15 when they have a 15 minute break for tea, and the play resumes until 6.30 pm....although five "days" are allocated to the game, it can often end sooner, if there is a definite result, it's even been known for a test match to end with a result within two days.... It's the original and purest form of the game, and it is only played between international teams, and only those international teams of the highest standard...England, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, being among the world's best....they are called "test" matches because that's what they literally are, a test of endurance, toughness, patience, and skill...... there are other countries who do play international matches, although they might not have full "test match" status, but they still compete at high levels. Countries like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Netherlands, Afghanistan, Canada, being among these teams.......cricket is probably the second most widely watched sport in the world..........

A game that takes 5 days , standing in the summer sun is gonna test anybody . I love it. The other forms of Cricket can be fun to watch for a while but I always return to Test Cricket for a proper fix . As a beginner , Tech , you should watch T20 , the shortest version , otherwise you'll probably get really bored , Test Cricket is certainly an acquired taste. Watch the shorter versions in order to get your head in the game and take it from there .

Twenty 2o cricket is a much faster and more exciting game. Players only have 20 overs each to score as many runs as possible. (120 bowls). One day cricket is a little bit slower, the players have 50 overs (300 bowls), to score as many run as possible without getting all 10 batsman out. So you have a bit more time to play safer. I little bit more technical. Test match cricket, there is no over limit. You keep bowling until you get all 10 batsman out. Both teams bat twice and both totals are added together. A much slower game and very technical. The batsman do not have to get runs quickly. It's move about playing safe and not getting out. Test match cricket is more about, the bowler getting the batsman out. Instead off scoring lots of run. Runs are still important, but there no rush to get them. Because the batsman can play safe. There's no hurry to get runs, because it goes for 5 days. Can be very boring. Twenty 20 cricket is the best too watch. I hope this helped a bit. 🙂

Firstly batsmen bat until they are out, they do not retire after hitting one ball. Secondly with the exception of T20 cricket leagues which frankly (for the purist cricket watcher) are purely money making exercises any game that you are likely to see on TV will be an international match between countries. Don't get me wrong T20 cricket is entertaining its just that the games really don't mean much for most cricket supporters in the same way international matches do. Thirdly for test matches, the players play for six hours a day, split into three 2 hour session, broken by a 40 minute period to have lunch and a 20 minute period for afternoon tea (yes I am serious). Two things not explained in this video (well there are more than two but these two are crucial). Firstly the ball is the same ball the innings start with and only changed if that ball becomes unusable, this is crucial as the ball as it wears acts differently when moving through the air depending on the wear and reacts differently to the ground when it bounces. Secondly the pitch (the area between the wickets that the bowler bowls to the batter) wears as well, while this is not so important in T20 matches due to the limited time frame it can be crucial in the 5 day test matches as the pitch dries out, cracks appear and the bowler's footmarks that occur during the bowling follow through become more pronounced. Batting on the 5th day of a test match is extremely difficult. Test matches are called a test as it literally is with the player's stamina and concentration pushed hard over the 5 days. If you want an indication of how serious cricket is taken by the nations that play it look for a You Tube video detailing the history of the "Ashes". This is the trophy played for between England and Australia... the oldest rivals in cricket.

In test cricket you want to build up a really big score over two innings in order to win. This means as a batsman you really don't want to get out. So you play more defensively and play yourself in, hopefully that way the runs will follow. In fixed over cricket, especially T20, your side are only going to face a limited number of balls (120 in T20) and you go for the riskier higher scoring shots. You've got to build up your score in a short time. If you lose a wicket there's another batsman to follow and there's a good chance you will face the full number of overs before losing the tenth wicket.. So although the game is the same, the play is very different.. In 1 day cricket you will see all the spectacular skied shots and snatched runs that could end in disaster but look oh so spectacular in KZbin compilations. The 5 day game is much more tactical and just simmers slowly, but when it does come to the boil it can be just as spectacular.

One thing I hate about this video is how they exaggerate the length of play of each format. A T20 match lasts for 3-3:30 hrs. A One Day match lasts for 7-8 hrs. A Test match goes for at most 5 days and 90 overs per day. Each day the game lasts for 8 hrs with two breaks in between for a total of 1 hr.

Yes , all three forms of cricket are played. They have the same rules, for all of them . Test Cricket over five days is arguably the purest form of the sport. The two other forms came about due to a need for more public interest to get public to pay to come and see. As Cricket was becoming " Old Fashioned and elitist." There are also two and tree day cricket matches at provincial level and actually throughout the world.. So there is the smash and bash, T, twenty, a more Tactical and strategic one day'er. and the totally Tactical and strategic nightmare of Test Cricket. All are slightly different in there approach to the game . I was only ever a school boy when I played. Again the same basic rules apply.

The best Test Cricket is those played between two countries, which are members of the Commonwealth of Nations; the games to watch are those that feature Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa and the West Indies. Type of cricket or the length of the game to Turman this the type of cricket that is played. There are no changes in the rules but a 20 over game favours the batsmen. They can slog away at the ball and if they lose their wicket there’s a bunch more guys in the dressing room to replace them. The test cricket or five day match is played in a much slower pace and is more like a game of chess. Once you’re into it you can actually sit in front of the TV for five days

Love test cricket, especially the Ashes (series of 5x Test Matches = 25 days) between Australia & England. High stakes, full of strategy, and more than a century of history and bad blood between both countries. But a one-sided test match without any real competition is not much fun to watch for 3-5 days. One Day cricket has lost it's appeal a bit with me now that T20 has come along. T20 is like a cricket adrenaline burst, but not one for the purists.

Cricket in its purest form is played over 4 or 5 days, this is called a Test; county or state matches are usually played over 2 days. One day cricket was introduced as another form of cricket, and each team faces up to 50 overs each; which can take up to 6 or 8 hours, thus one day. T20 is the latest revolution in cricket, where each team faces 20 overs; it was devised to attract more spectators, as it only takes about 3 hours.

Obviously a "day" does not mean 24 hours. A test match is a two-innings game (not one-innings as shown here) and is played in traditional white clothing by sides representing two national teams that are "Full members" of the ICC; the USA, for instance, is only an "Associate member". A test match day is three 2-hour sessions with a 40-minute break for 'lunch' and a 20-minute break for 'tea'. When an innings ends there is a ten minute break before the next one starts.

Yes I don't like T20 but it's the most exciting it's all about just smashing the crap out of the ball and get the most runs in the shortest time 20 overs. A 1 day match is better. 50 overs, you get a bit a strategy coming out. You still are getting as many runs as possible but you not just trying to hit as many 6's as possible. The best is a test match it's more a strategic game, a game of chess. Because the ball is not replaced often so it gets worn and doesn't work the same, and the pitch can change to advantage the bater or a fast bowler or a spin bowler.
