As with various incidents portrayed in ‘Yes Minister’, the cancellation of an announcement as the government minister was en route to make the announcement is something that happened a few times in the late 90s and early 2000s.

This was actually envisioned as Yes Minister 2.0. Creator Armando Iannucci presented a documentary on Yes Minister as part of a series on the best British sitcom. Following this Iannucci created a modern Yes Minister, where instead of Civil servants blocking the Minister, who in this telling are docile, its the spin doctors and political advisors seeking personal progression. Like YM, the Minister heads a fictional department that is vague enough to encompass a wide variety of different political areas. Following the success of the Thick of It, Iannucci launched Veep on HBO as a quasi-American remake, which ran for 7 seasons (2012-19)

Series 1 is regarded as the best but isn't talked about much because the lead actor, Chris Langham, was later prosecuted and jailed for having videos and images of child abuse on his computer.

You weren't far wrong when you referred to this as "Yes Minister 2.0". Both series depict the power struggles between politicians, the civil service and the media, but here it is told from the perspective of spin doctors and journalists rather than civil servants. (There is a good deal more swearing in this too, but you appear to be taking this in your stride.)

I worked in UK Government Strategy & Policy in Westminster ( Civil Servant) for years. I was an expert advisor & had a good reputation. I can confirm you have to be 2 steps ahead of colleagues to prevent being stabbed in the back. Fortunately, I was! Now retired from that adrenaline rush circus where we worked 14 hour days

Chris Langham who played the new incoming minister turned out to be a paedophile and went to prison after this series. He was replaced by another new minister for further series so at least it wasn’t the end of the show.

Agree with others that seasons 1 and 2 are the weakest of this. The specials, seasons 3 and 4 and In the Loop are all much better.

Just a heads up, the minister who mentions 'morsel' and rudes in the car was played by an actor who was arrested for having indecent images of children. Editing him out in future might be a good idea.

@@grunions9648 Supposedly because he himself had been abused as a child. I don't know how likely that is but the judge seemed to believe him (not that that stopped him being guilty). I think it's still ok to react to - we'd lose a lot of media if we scrapped it every time an actor did something bad/criminal.
