It's scary when so called leaders or pastors can't handle someone disagreeing with them. I've had similar experiences when I've respectfully disagreed with a pastor, based on scripture, and had them turn on me. Praise God for documentaries like American Gospel, as they can articulate what we are feeling and make us realise we are not alone!

Yes, American Gospel:Christ Alone, opened my eyes too. Thank God for that documentary. I spent 18 years in that type of church. What a tragedy. No more! I found a Bible teaching church and have been attending for 2 months now. You're not alone, we lost all our "friends" too. That's okay, they weren't true friends anyway. Yes, it still hurts, but we too still love them and pray for them. We're hopefully we're making real godly friends in our future! Thank you for sharing!

I can also relate to this. I too, was heavily influenced by the word of faith movement specifically Joel Osteen 's teachings. I remember i would write down all his (and Joyce Meyer's) teachings here on youtube and memorize all of them. But thank God, He led me to Pastor John Piper's preachings, Albert Mohler, Tim Keller and now I can name more than 20 solid reformed pastors. Praise God.

In my previous church my pastor told me that I was not allowed to read the Bible at home with close friends because it was too dangerous without a church leader!! I was not allowed to pray with them either. He said that all teaching and “prayer meetings” had to be in the church. I eventually confronted my pastor. I praise God for the way you denounce the errors and false teaching of the prosperity gospel, word of faith, hypercharismatic and N.A.R movement. I agree with you that there are a lot of abuse of all kinds in the church worldwide. I too had my eyes opened to all those errors, I was spitiritual abused when I decided to leave my fellowship due to doctrinal errors and could no longer stay under their teachings. Your documentary confirmed a lot of what I experienced. I was gullible and had no idea about all the various biblical world view... Last year was a big eye opener year while learning about the different biblical world view. What I discover with God's leading is that even the calvinist reformed movement have some errors. I do like their teaching very much but there are not without mistake themselves. So I praise God for guiding me in Spirit and in Truth and putting some humble teachers on my path, those that are not afraid to admit that they don't know everything all of the time but are prepare to learn and search the bible in its context for truth and eventually admit if the were wrong about something. We must be carefull to remain humble at all time and continue to be teachable. My wife and I left that a church at never spoke in Hell as a literal place snd lead by co pastors Male and Female. We were leading the evangelism team going there for 5 years. We love these people like family. But when confronted about it they said it’s my view of scripture. Which wasn’t enough for me. So we left. Myself and wife been blessed so taken care of our father God. Promise follow the Bible not your feelings or people. You will start to see God and how close he truly wants to be to use. Yes it's difficult but so worth it. I had been in a church which emphasized baptism as the thing that saved you. I talked with the pastor and kept showing him Ephesians 1:13, and that baptism was an act of obedience but had nothing to do with salvation. He said "if you believe that, you're going to hell." On one hand it was hard because he was the pastor of a big church, and on the other hand it was easy to leave because I believed the Bible more than him...and still do, thank God. So I'm thankful that He gave you the conviction and strength to do what was right.

Sounds like me. All my friends attend a church based on Bethel teachings. My best friend pastors it. I've confronted him many times on the false teachings of Bethel. He says I'm a pharisee and legalistic. I now attend a Lutheran church. I do appreciate the orthodox doctrine but really miss my friends that attend the other church.

The anti-doctrinal stance of these kind of churches is one factor that makes it hard to get out. Most other kinds of churches will explicitly tell you their doctrinal positions, but at places like this nobody ever tells you “We believe in dominion theology” or “we believe in the Manifest sons of God” or “we believe in the spiritual covering doctrine” or whatever, so it takes a little longer to figure out what’s going on. One of the problems with Christianity is that most sermons are either solely about the New Testament or are Joel Osteen style sermons that have very little to do with either the New or Old Testament. Most of Joel Osteen type sermons resemble improved Tony Robbins motivational type lectures on how to be successful in life or resemble get rich quick schemes. Deuteronomy 4:2 basically says not to substitute Joel Osteen type material for the Old Testament as Joel Osteen type sermons support Christianity’s adulterous & idolatrous worship of idols, money & financial success. The reason the Old Testament or Tanakh is so important is that the Old Testament is more or less a history book of the human race. And if you don’t learn from history, you are doomed to repeat the same mistakes you have made in the past. The main problem with the New Testament is that in terms of a history book, it only goes back to the time of JC. The New Testament just doesn’t cover a very long time period. The Old Testament goes back to creation of the universe and covers a much larger time frame. The big question is about whether or not Christians should be worried in the least. The answer is found in Isaiah 27:1 with the Leviathan representing Christianity. G - - always lives up to His promises. Of course, you would only know this fact if you have read the Old Testament. Another thing to consider if you are well read in the Tanakh is that the Levites lived on tithes in exchange for teaching G - -‘s word to the populace. Not long after the prophet Joshua died, the Levi group of priests much like Joel Osteen began teaching the populace more about what they felt the populace wanted to hear with the motivation largely being to get the biggest donations. Once Jews re-instituted idol worship & turned away from worshipping G - -, G - - had approximately 95% of the Jewish population massacred first by the Assyrian army and then by the Babylonian army. Only a small remnant of Jews survived. G - -‘s punishment for the Jews was considerably worse than what happened to Jews in World War II in terms of percentage of the population massacred. And G - - considered Jews His children. So if you think Christians will somehow escape G - -‘s wrath from idolatrous Joel Osteen type preaching, then think again as G - - doesn’t have the same type of relationship with Christians due to Christian worship of JC as their savior. Isaiah 27:1 will eventually prevail, and G - - will very likely not spare even a single Christian artery or vein. In fact Obadiah 18 basically states that there will be no survivors from the house of Esau. Are there any other unforeseen problems created by Joel Osteen type preaching whereby very little Tanakh based scripture is taught during sermons? Yes. First Christians suffer immensely financially & socially from this type of Tanakh-free preaching. Just look at how many radio talk shows have popped up in major cities across the USA with the theme of “catching cheaters” in regards to adultery. Cheater themed talk shows are incredibly popular and are now major advertising revenue creators for radio talk shows as radio listeners love to hear about other peoples’ misery. Adultery, and divorce caused by adultery is absolutely rampant throughout America. The social costs are in the multiple billions in terms of children who now live with one parent or who now have to move back and forth between parents during the holidays. Poor quality, low Tanakh content Joel Osteen type Christian preaching also invariably leads to rampant antisemitism when divorced broken family angry Christians look at their happily married Jewish neighbors who tend to not only be happy in life but who tend to have multiple happy and well adjusted children. And all this Christian divorce, misery & unhappiness could be so easily avoided if only Christians would realize that the only person cashing in on Tanakh-free sermons is possibly Joel Osteen and his family. Tanakh-free sermons create a situation much like the mega state lottery where there is only one 400 million dollar winner and everyone besides the winner loses the $3 they paid for the tickets. With Tanakh-free sermons, Joel Osteen is the main lottery winner. Additionally, the Christian version of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible has been so severely altered to support Christianity’s love for idolatry and adultery, that the Christian version of the Old Testament is no longer even remotely usable. Go to Sefaria.org or Chabad.org to get an unaltered free online version. If you don’t believe adultery is a problem in the USA just contemplate the proliferation of morning radio show programs about catching cheaters. Additionally, what does the Tanakh or history of the human race say about false prophets/ preachers who lead their sheep-like followers astray for massive financial gain? Well, it never, ever ends well. For example, mega-preacher Gwen Shamblin Lara who instead of teaching Tanakh based scripture, tried to get Christians to lose weight through nutrition. Gwen Shamblin Lara perished at a very young age in a plane crash along with her husband and 5 other church leaders. And the list of Christian-type total disasters goes on. The reason Gwen Lara Shamblin perished is that historically one of G - -‘s main weapons of destruction for His enemies is disease / pestilence. Obesity is a disease, and if G - - had allowed Gwen Lara Shamblin to continue living, she would have been in direct conflict with G - - in preventing Isaiah 27:1 from coming to fruition. I don't see the problem here. The church being described simply sounds like a standard Pentecostal church (with a contemporary worship style). Though I do not agree with the Pentecostal notion of a "Second Blessing" or the baptism in the spirit evidenced by speaking in tongues, these are not heretical teachings. You are mistaking your view of the gifts (i.e. they ended with the apostolic era) as the true "biblical" view that defines orthodoxy. It doesn't. You may actually be the ones in error on this matter.

There is a difference between movements that abuse the gifts of the Holy Spirit and use it for their own benefit and don't use scripture behind it. We need to make sure what happens lines up with the word of God. Idk about the whole slain in the spirit or drunk in the spirit but I do know that the gifts of the Holy Spirit have not ceased the healing miracles tongues etc still exist and I believe they will continue until Jesus comes back like it says in 1 Corin 13 : 8-12. I believe that the gifts are here to build and uplift the church and the body of Christ and so that others will see the power of God and know he is real. Alot of people have come to Christ because of his signs and wonders at the end of the day that is what he wants, is his children to come back to him. I do believe in the gifts I've seen healings and demons and miracles. Now when people start to abuse it and do it for their own imagine to look powerful and glorify themselves and things along that line that is when it gets dangerous and you're playing with God. Everything we do has to lead back to God for his Glory. There sometimes is a fine fine fine line between the Christians that believes in these gifts and the movements that abuse it with the wrong motives. Always pray and discern those things and ask if it is biblical if it points back to God. Some people are so deep in the gifts they toss out the word. We need the scripture its God's living word. ---- after I commented on this I prayed and I feel like God reminded me about Joel's prophecy that is also in acts 2:17-18 "and it shall come to pass that in the last days, I will pour out my Spirit on ALL flesh your sons and daughters shall prophesy young men will see visions old men shall dream dreams. God is real his gifts are real the spirit realm is real hell is real heaven is real. Becareful of movements that do and say things but don't back it up with scripture, also read your Bible. RIP mom but when I was a teen she always told me that there will be alot of deception in the church and that at the end of the day we have to go back to our Bible and read it for ourselves. Haha I was just thinking the same thing brother. I became born again a year and a half ago. One of my first Bible studies before getting baptized was the book of Acts chapters 1&2 which talks about what receiving the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues is a huge part of that. Idk what Bible he’s reading. I pray the Lord gives him discernment.

I’m trying to find a bible. From my understanding, when the word GOD or LORD or JESUS are written in all capitals, those styles are not correct, because according to the English language, that style of writing is hieroglyphics, thus making it a mockery of Christ. Can you please lead me in the right direction for a bible that has a true translation? Check it out yourself :) if you look online at several versions, you will see that in some versions, the words are written in all caps, and in other versions, they words are written properly, ie: Lord, God, Jesus. As opposed to LORD, GOD, JESUS. Any way, Satan has infiltrated some of the translations of the NIV KHV and other versions. I have returned to Jesus after turning my back for many years. Name 1 "prophet" that at least mentioned the word covid before you and I heard it. You see when you read scripture in-context you understand that the "sign" gifts have ceased. With all that being said "God" heals today as he wills today without anyone having the gift of healing like "some" of the early Christians did.

So a Cessationist walked in to a Charismatic church, didn't like what he saw, asked them to change their theology on the gifts, they wouldn't, he left the church and was surprised that all of his friends at the Charismatic church weren't OK with it.

@@backcountry8405 I'm not Charismatic. I've seen the gifts manifested in various ways, through the many sicknesses that my daughter has been delivered from. They are real. My point is this: they were incredibly egotistical to think the church should change just for them. I would never ask a church to change just for me. If my views and doctrine changed, I would move on. There are many churches to choose from, and many of them are Cessationist. Just find the one that's for you and be happy, it's not a heaven or hell issue. But I know the gifts are real because I've seen God move. Whether I'm believed or not doesn't matter.
