In response to your question about 'self narration' - I sometimes run through things in my head, and talk them through especially if I am preparing to talk about it later with someone - e.g. creating dialogue, comedy, narrative or presentation. I don't maintain a running commentary of every action as I go through my day. BTW Karl isn't 'stupid'. His 'Karl Pilkington persona' is that of a straight-talking, no-nonsense deadpan type of person. He's almost playing 'devils advocate' and providing the voice of the ordinary man, making either controversial challenges, observations, or asking questions that many do but are afraid to ask. That's why people relate to him and find him funny. He's actually applying pure logic in some situations akin to the boy in the story of 'the emperor's new clothes'. Dare I say he's accentuating his own dry way of seeing the World, but to a level where he's being a 'provocative fool' with his 'straight-faced' assertions which can sound outrageous. This type of humour is typical in parts of the UK and we get it, because it often provokes those who either take it literally or actually believe he's being totally serious. This type of humour (irony) is often lost on many Americans, whereas we in the UK grew up with it.

on the thinking in sentences thing sometimes you will meet people who started in one country speaking one language then move to another country where they learn the language of the new country and after a few years or a decade find that they stopped thinking in the old language and now think in the new. my parents used to train priests to go off to other countries and it seemed to be a common thing to talk about when they met up years later.

@@chrisparti I work in FORENSIC MENTAL HEALTH, a patient after having meeting with his doctors he came to me and told me how full of shit these doctors are and said everybody hears voices in their heads so ok I have 9 different ones some have less. He than began to ask me how many I have, I told him if I do it’s one but that is only asking what have got on today and at what time. He said see so you do hear voices everybody does. Er nope I hear my thoughts not exactly voices, it’s not worth saying what he said next but it was in a very angry context. I think in sentences. Since my stroke 13 years ago I know I don’t type in the sentences I think in on a keyboard and I can read it over a few times and still get it wrong but once it’s sent I can see mistakes clearly. The inner monologue is something that occurs during certain types of brain activity. For example, you tend to use an inner monologue when you're curious about things. But we don't have an inner monologue for stuff like hunger because it's a neurological response. We would only experience the inner monologue when we ask ourselves 'what should we eat?' in response to the hunger. However, many people have a regular routine and don't need to ask themselves such things.

As someone who lives and works alone a lot, I find that I don't have an inner monologue when I haven't spoken to people in a while, but if I've spoken to people for a while, I sometimes catch myself thinking in straight sentences. I find that carpentry is easier without the monologue and writing is easier with the monologue. Also, talking to people when you haven't spoken to anyone for two weeks takes a while to get used to for me. There's a bit of start-up lag if you will. Cheers from Denmark. I really enjoy the videos.

I internally verbalise when narrating a conversation in my head between two people. The rest of the time my thoughts are purely conceptual and have no dialogue. But if I focus on my conceptual mind at any point, it can be internally verbalised if I want to. It doesn't cost any energy but does slow things down because I think a lot quicker than I verbalise.
@rextheroyalist6389
@rextheroyalist6389 Жыл бұрын
For me it's the same except that intentionally summoning a voice to verbalise even brief thoughts is so mentally exhausting that literally saying it out loud is easier, so I regularly speak to myself in order to fully realise longer / more complex trains of thought

Everybody thinks in full sentences, some do it consciously and some do it subconsciously. Most people do both depending on the situation, for instance, in an emergency it will tend to be subconsciously, but if you are say, cramming for an exam, or trying to answer a question in general, it will tend to be consciously, but everyone is different.

There's a difference between actions and thoughts, actions are done subconsciously like feeling hungry you just go and find something to eat, you don't have to have an internal debate about what to do about it, and your brain projects an image of what it craves. Making plans or decisions requires thought and this is where a thinking voice comes in handy to help you weigh up the pros and cons, maybe this is why some people are know to be good decision makers or strategists

I also have a thing about counting letters. I count the letters in a word and then the words in a sentence and then add all the letters in a sentence together and then if its double digits i will add the digits together and then see if it is the same number as the first word i read. i dont only count like that but that is the sort of thing that i do. I only do it with public signs though and only if im sitting down. Its annoying because my head just starts doing it even if i dont want to.

It's called the sub-vocal voice in psychology. Everyone has it. Everyone uses it. But only for conscious thought. Though not necessarily ALWAYS for conscious thought. So: If you're just lazing about and feel peckish and subsciously get up n grab a snack there won't be a voice. You're on autopilot and barely even registering anything. My breakfast is always the same so I don't discuss what I'm going to eat But if you kinda 'notice' you're hungry and it becomes a conscious thought you may in your sub-vocal voice say "oh! I'm hungry' and when looking through cupboards to decide what to have be discussing 'hmm.. na.. maybe.. something chocolatey..aha! Yum yum yum' . Though again even the same person may speak to themselves one time and then not another the next. If you're consciously hungry and have one snack available you're more likely to think conceptually cos there's very little drain on your mental resources. You're hungry. Your getting that thing you have to eat. As opposed to having to decide from 4 or 5 snacks which would best satisfy you which requires holding and jungling information consciously in short-term working-memory. Speaking aids with retention in short term memory The one that I always do it for is mental arithmetic '20% off from 150...10% is 15, Times 2 = 30. 150 - 30 equals 120" is literally how I figured that out in my head More often then not when making decisions Both regarding that holding onto and working with information which is resource heavy for the mind And probably more often than is normal, if I'm happy and lost in my own thoughts. Like making a cheese sandwich I will just be saying/ singing "cheese cheese cheese" in my head as I slice it

@@jgreen2015 that was a really interesting read! I tend to do it even something bad happens! If it’s a disaster, I’ll say something like “ohh goodness me!” or “oh dear oh dear!”, sort of under reacting to the severity to play it down in my mind sort of helps me to deal with it

Queen Boomer is looking stunning, as always of course, lol! And just to note, i know i think in full sentences with my accent. I would naturally think that most people hear their own voices when thinking in their heads right? Queen Boomer clearly has her cheeky side too, i love it, lol! Although i think she's going to be in trouble for some of her cheeky comments, lol! Karl's thinking should be studied by scientists, lol! It's such a conundrum of unusual thoughts. The places his mind goes when he thinks it way out there, lol! A great video as always guys. Have a wonderful day, take care!

I do narrate in my own head, but not all the time. I don't know why I do it sometimes and not all the time or none of the time, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. The diary was hilarious, I still remember the first time I heard it on the podcast and trying (and failing) to stop myself laughing out loud at the darts on the PSP.

Lol I loved the reaction I'm a South African right... and I don't really think narratively about general stuff and I never really think in my accent at all hey unless its a Zulu thought or any thought about my my neighborhood, family or anything close like that but generally my thoughts are just internal reactions or in English especially the " voice in my head" that's in English but I think that's because I watch a lot of American and British stuff

I go in and out of narration. I definitely don't need to think "Oh look at the time, I should see what the Mrs wants for dinner.", but if I'm problem solving something like a computer problem, I've definitely had a conversation in my head "The power's definitely hooked up. I've got the power jumper on the board, I've removed that stick of memory, so let's try the other one."
