It is an old way to prepare the fish when there were no fridges. So the fish could be stored. The lye is completely rinsed off. It is served with white sauce and seasoned with salt and black pepper. In Finland we eat it almost only in Christmas for tradition. Some like it, some not.

When I traveled to the UK, I actually saw more fat people than I saw in LA, and that’s not even a joke. The USA, also isn’t even in the top 10 for being overweight in fact 70 percent of Americans are not overweight while 30 percent are. It also depends on the state, for example Utah and Colorado only have 11 percent of overweight individuals in their states making them below the EU in obesity.

Well, what is "bizarre" is subjective and depends on what you are accustomed to or have become desensitized to. For example, It is really hard for me, personally, to see eating an organ that has pumped blood and given life to another being as being, "cultured." If my preference makes me "uncultured" then I'm very uncultured.

***** Surströmming is known as a Swedish delicacy. I have myself never eaten or smelled an open can of it. Apparently you have to open the can of the fermented fish under water or the smell will be so bad you more or less will be sick to your stomach. It is often eaten in very small portion sizes at a time, and is served on knäckebröd (hard bread) with sliced fresh potatoes, sour cream and red onions to accompany it. If you can just get by the smell, many people state that it is quite delicious. (The smell is so potent though. One person once opened a can in his apartment and the whole building was evacuated because people thought there was a gas leak. He was evicted and had to pay for sanitation.)

@@_Ferko Yeah I agree lol, not tryna shame anyone. My bad. Idk, I guess I think geography is an important subject to know about, especially its correlation to current affairs. Or bare minimum the continents.
@MrAuntElisa
@MrAuntElisa 4 жыл бұрын
@@_Ferko Speaking as an European - I don't agree that it does neccessarily always go both ways, at least not in the same proportions. World geography test where you had to name every country on the world map and write down its capital city was something that high school students in my central european country customarily had on their freshmen year in the mid 2010s. Basic knoweldge of every region of the world&location of at least the most prominent countries was something we've been also usually taught. Most people know where the best known US states like CA, TX, FL or Alaska are, and when they might be not sure what's the exact location of the rest, they are able to at least point out the region (we're rather familiar with terms like New England, Bible Belt and so on). A the schooling system over here ain't even in the top of the European ones.

Megan VanDoren Where I'm from people are very vocal and opinonated too. I think Americans are a bit easier offended, especially when you say something personal. Wheras people from "western" europe (Sweden, Holland and especially the UK) are more sarcastic, "raw" and cynical (wich is not always a good thing). Light/easy comedy here is always called "American comedy" because people here have the stereotype that Americans don't understand or get complicated and sarcastic comedy. But it's just what you grew up with. An other thing is that "you americans" LOL always talk about "Europeans" like it's one country. There couldn't be more differences between Italy and Germany for instances despite being so close to eachother. It's like comparing people from Brazil and Japan, a lot of differences. Maybe we are more "cultured" (whatever that means), we're definitely not the same.

Well it depends on the fish, walleye is pretty good, so is salmon and a numerous number of other fish, I am American and yes there may be a lot of fast food, but most people eat it every so often and limit it, there isn't really a culture for our food seeing how there is people from all around the world in America, but there is small things like cheese curds and jo-Jo's and we just aren't used to your cultures food

+Abhineet Soren snails yes, (not that bad actually though the snails themselves are rather tasteless the garlic butter gives the taste) haggis, never tried, but typical Scottish. blood sausage was very typical in Germany (it was mostly eaten by poor people) fish cooked in NaOH? never heard and don´t wanna try. though i know NaOH is used in Brezels as well. (well everyone in germany knows that. before baking NaOH ist put on the Brezels surface. its the reason for the typical brown color of Brezels)

+Mattias Djärv i know part of it is that in warmer climates, like some of the US and a lot of the places that americans have immigrated from, you can't really keep blood around without it becoming a major health risk. That means that there aren't any traditional blood-foods from those areas and that eating blood/rare or uncooked meat is associated with sickness.

George Bird Lung (like eating lung) is banned in the USA, I think it's cause there's a chance of catching some rare diseases. Meats from the UK are also banned, since the whole mad cow disease thing. That's why the haggis they're eating is in that pastry puff, it's only technically haggis tbh.
